Astros 2012-13 Off-season (3 Viewers)

I like the Lowrie deal. Carter could be a fixture for a decade, but unsure if they should have targeted a DH as their cornerstone. I think he will rake in Houston, as log as they can offer even some meager protection in the lineup.I like the upside of the two minorleaguers. Both have neen disappointing, so they were able to buy low. Two year ago, there's no way they woudl have gotten either one, much less both. And both are very gifted and very young, plenty of time to revive careers. If not? THere was not muh of an investment in trade value or salary. I like the low risk potential high upside.THis club, that I have followed religously since they were the Colt 45s, is a current disaster. It is humbling for me to watch them. But moves like this could begin the creep to respectability. And once there are half dozen decent starters, there is plenty of payroll available to dabble in FA and round out the team without having to raid their farm. I am less enthusiastic about moving Norris. I think its likely that his market value right now is less than it should be, so I doubt what I like what is received in return. I think he could be a #2 or 3 starter for a long time with just a little proper coaching.
The move to the weak AL West should do nothing but boost their near term prospects. ;)

Looks like the Stros wised up and realized even they couldn't stomach a guy whose OBP hovered in the .275 range the past three years.

They dropped Ankiel?
Rick Ankiel: MLB RBI leaderToo bad it won't last
Ankiel is on pace for 162 home runs and 486 RBI.
Must we do this stupid extrapolation exercise every season?

That's the point, Kojak. Somewhere in America today, Clever Announcer Guy will be repeating that stat.

Who's gonna love ya baby!!!

Major props to Yu. He dominated the stros tonight. I'm just glad Marwin Gonzales came through. Rubber game tomorrow.

IF I had a dollar for everytime I told someone 'Marwin Gonzales is as clutch as they come' I'd be a rich man.

Shutout again today through 8 with 4 hits. On the radio, Buster Olney just said, "Any loss to the Astros this year is the equivalent of 2 losses to any other team."

Usually the Astros only establish club records in the sport, but this year they'll be going for some mlb records.

They are bad. But 22 hits yesterday is pretty good (although Wallace had zero of them and is batting .048)

Progress!! I would be thrilled if they can win 1 of the next 2 vs the Angels.

Dump Wallace tho. Dude will never pan out.

Just for those who are ignoring anything Astros, they called up robbie Grossman more of lead-off high on base guy. Has started ok. in AAA and is going to in center field for at least the next month or so

Good article on Grantland yesterday about the advantages the Astros are getting by being not "one of the worst" but the actual worst team in baseball. The Corea pick was done for less than max $$$ so they had more money for later players. This year they will have the biggest budget for Latin players to go with Jonathan Gray (probably) or Mark Appell (maybe). And they'll probably have the #1 pick again next year.

Did Astros ex-President George Postolos jump or was he pushed? The normally patient Astros bloggers don't seem sad to see him leave.
