At ER with 90-year-old Dad. Will answer any questions! (1 Viewer)

Dad has pneumonia and is being admitted. He'll be in ICU overnight. Probably a regular room by noon tomorrow.

Thanks for all the good wishes in here.  I am going to be busy for a bit an will be off line.  You guys helped me quite a bit although there were probably a few hot nurse lines that could have been delivered that you missed.  I should have posted a picture, I realize.
Good luck to you and your pops.  I lost mine a few years ago.  I miss him and I'm pretty sure I had 4 or 5 more ways to disappoint him left in me.

I am currently going through what you're experiencing and I have much empathy for you. My 75 year-old mom has small vessel dementia and her medical condition has dipped significantly in the past couple months. She has very little quality of life. I'm the only immediate family member within 1000 miles. A very detailed, explicit advance directive is a must.  Best wishes to you and your father.
I went through similar with my mother. She had Alzheimer's and passed away in August 2015.
Me, too.  I was my mother's guardian after Dad died until her death in February.  At least we could afford a really excellent memory care facility for her.  It's not fun.  I'm the only child, and the rest of the family is in England.  I'm basically on my own now.

Good luck with your dad.

I am with him now. He's agitated but ok. They only let me in for an hour at a time in ICU. Long discussion with doc about DNR. I haven't signed it yet but might. It's probably not a big deal as he is unlikely to be revived if his heart stops. I found his living will.

Thanks again for all the good wishes. I miss my ample-chested ER nurse!

If he is mentally able and you haven't already done this, get a Power of Attorney RIGHT NOW.  I can't tell you how beneficial it might be.  Getting guardianship is a bear.

I'm so glad you are able to be with him.

Dad is in very bad shape. Sepsis and fluid in his lungs. Kidneys might be failing.  Brother flying in from Georgia.  Signed DNR.

Sorry to hear that, man. My dad's last days were horrible. Best of luck to you in being there for him.

And may the ample-chested nurse be there to give you strength.

Sorry to hear it WK... it's a tough situation to be in.  I wish you and yours the best.

Can we get an update on ICU nurses?

Sending best wishes to you and your dad.  My girlfriends father recently passed after a nasty bout with cancer.  I hope your father is at least comfortable.  As another poster commented, i am no where near ready for my father to pass.

ICU Nurses were almost all guys.  They sent us to a private room and have begun palliative care.  Morphine too.  He has less that 24 hours.  Thanks everyone!

Sorry, GB. I hope he has a peaceful passing. Prayers to you and yours.

It is a tough time, but sounds like it is time.  My pop passed away in March at the age of 91 from, primarily, congestive heart failure.  His quality of life was poor for the past several years, and he was ready to go.  He went at home (home hospice) with all of us around him.  A good life that ended without undue suffering.

Dad passed away just after midnight.  It was quick and painless although he struggled to breathe a bit and got agitated a few times.  It was much more peaceful than my mom a couple of years ago, which was gut-wrenching.

Thanks again for all the good thoughts.  Dad had a good life, and like I said earlier, it was an honor to care for him.

Going peacefully in the night at 90 years old with my son by my side... I can't think of a much better way to pass.  My condolences to you and your family WK.

Sounds like you gave a lot of strength and comfort in his last few hours.  Condolences to you and your family...
