At the spelling bee (1 Viewer)

My daughter's in the semifinals. #119 from Michigan, Lily.

No chance of winning - she's just a smart girl who can spell, but these kids have coaches and spend their days studying.

Watch for her brothers when she spells. One of them is bound to be eating a booger when the camera's on them.

I would be careful.

That signaling scam was exposed back in the 1987 bee.

Sweet - she had obviously never heard that word before.

That weird Jacob kid from last year is here, and he yells once in awhile.

My daughter is a schoolmate of #90. #90 seems to be a pretty interesting kid with interests other than spelling, but spelling bee prep is a year-round sport at their house.

Yeah, they showed a bit about Vanya, who has a spelling study room. Lily studied maybe 40 hours after she qualified for nationals. I think she's outgunned.

She got a killer loot bag. It's like she went to the Fiesta Bowl.

Am I missing the link to this?

Also, Tick, I seem to recall something being said about you being in the D.C. area for this. Yes?

That's

He's not in the competition, though - just yelling from the audience when some spellers miss. He also ambushed my boys for an autograph before realizing they weren't spellers. He's an odd one.

yeah, we're at National Harbor just south of DC. It's been a great trip. They have enough spread out spelling events that we've only gotten in to the museums one day, but we'll get back tomorrow... Maybe later today depending on how she does.Top 40 at the worst - so cool! I've never done that well at anything.

No link from me - it's on ESPN2. The finals later today are on ESPN. The prelims yesterday were on ESPN3.

Found it, watching  . Go Little Tick!!! Love the personalities of these kids!

Being me, I have to evaluate everything in terms of food. They couldn't have done a worse job with the dining options in MD's National Harbor. Almost everything is crap, and completely everything is overpriced. Only place I'd suggest is Nando's Peri-Peri (Portuguese Grilled Chicken), and that might even be pushing it...

...luckily, you're not far from Old Town Alexandria,VA, where, although almost everything is overpriced, at least you have some quality options.

Where are you staying, how long in town for, all family time, or time to grab beers with fellow FBG's?

Vanya, the kid from Norman, and a kid with a cool name like Gokul who got 3rd last year. That kid from Kentucky sounds like a machine, too. Tejas seems good.

No time for FBG beers - we'll be hitting DC museums with any extra time. If I have a free evening, there's a work friend I'll meet up with.

Yeah, food sucks. We found some pad thai that was good, and we went simple with Potbelly sammiches twice. It looks like a no-lunch day today at the speed they're moving.

Missed schefflera - she takes German and loves plants, so she didn't get hosed. Incredible experience, now off to museums.

Really touching shots of Mom(?) offering support afterwards. Lots to be proud of. Don't miss out on Museum of American Indian - very good restaurant inside : Mitisam - featuring all kinds of Native American Foods. Have a great time, and maybe we can arrange for beers next time around.

Was at home for lunch and scrolling through the channels.. saw your daughter.. tough word.

She did awesome... Way to represent West Michigan! ;)

Is it me, or does even Kaylee Hartung look a bit Indian today? Man, she's just smokin'...
If that was the ESPN lady in the orange/pink dress, I agree. She's pretty small.

Having a national spelling bee fantasy draft today at lunch. Who's the smart money on?
#90, Vanya Shivashankar. Previous top five finish, multiple trips to nationals, older sister won the bee a few years ago.
Also like #140, Gokul Venkatachalam. Finished third last year. And #200, Cole Shafer-Ray.
Nailed it - I'm not sure if I'm impressed or a little freaked out.

It's my freakiest handicapping success since crushing the gymnastics board at the 2012 Olympics.

Me too - nailed the top 3, and the other two made the finals.
