At what point do you take your dog to the vet? (1 Viewer)

This is a serious touchy subject..our family cocker spaniel is 17 years old. She still eats, moves around, and shows no signs of having a hard time. She is unfortunately and obviously very slow now and her weight is dropping.

Do we take her to the vet and have her put to sleep or just let Her live out her life?

It's a family decision and its 2 for the vet Vs 3 not for it

Sucks to have to have that conversation. So sorry.

When a pet is obviously in pain and suffering I believe we as humans are being selfish by prolonging their suffering.

It's not time.

If she shows no signs of suffering, it's not time to put her down. If you're worried, take her in for a checkup. The doc isn't going to put her down just because she's old.

When she's suffering and it's time, you'll know. Until then enjoy the time you have with her.

:goodposting: have to agree here.. as long as they are eating, pooping, walking and showing no signs of being in pain then let nature take it's course ..

Big difference between

"When do I put my dog down?"

and

"When do I take my dog to the vet?"
HS, for real.

OP, tell your wife or whoever is driving this to slow their roll. Take the dog to the vet to get her looked at, get some vitamins, get her treated, whatever she needs, but it doesn't sound like it's necessarily time for her to "go." She might have a thyroid problem, she might have a UTI, who knows.

eta - Btw you're the man of the family, you and your wife make this call, you don't put something like this up for a vote.

Also, typically, when it's time, it doesn't last long and you'll know. Agree with bringing to the vet to get a qualified objective opinion.

She went to the vet

6 months ago ...she has heartworms but the doctor said at her age the treatment procedure is not worth what her life expectancy is. Apparently, when they turn 15 heart worm medicine can do more harm than good.

Doc seemed to say just let her live it out.

She still moves and gets up etc

Eats fine..just recently spine is starting to show and such.

No matter how much food

Sucks we don't feel the same way about humans.

Id rather be late putting them down because of selfish reasons instead of being too early.
I'd rather be neither. My dog won't suffer because I "need" a few more days. But I get what you're saying.

OP, weight loss could be a sign of kidney (renal) failure. If this is a more recent event (since last vet visit) and is coupled with other symptoms like increased thirst it should be checked out.

They aren't going to show any obvious signs of suffering, but you can tell when they stop eating.

Toughest decision in my life was putting my first animal down a few years ago, and I'll have to do it again in probably 5 years max. It's always a decision you can 2nd guess because you can't tell how much the animal is suffering.

My current animal is so loyal, so warm. Just can't imagine having to put him down, but I know one day....it'll kill a part of me too.

UPDATE: Pup is currently not eating any food.......and blood in her stool.....

this is not good..and not the way to start a fresh year.

If she's eating she's ok. When it happens it will go fast. You'll know.
Mine ate like a horse till the final meal but hips went, couldn't push himself up, started losing control of bowels, etc...

To the OP - if your dog is eating and not showing discomfort then it's not time. Sorry - not fun to even think about.

I'm sorry your dog is in such bad shape, Mitch. Best of luck. I've had to deal with things like this way too many times. Unfortunately, it's part of being a responsible pet owner.

sorry man

and now is the time
... to go to the vet and see what's wrong.
i was thinking to the vet but everything might be closed for a few days..

this is not my fiance and mine dog.

This is my Families dog we've had since I was young.

dad

mom

and my brothers.
Emergency vets are open. Call around.
yeah there should be something to call. sounds like things aren't going well, but honestly you can't really make a call based on symptoms. take to your vet when you get a chance, and if the pup seems in pain look for an emergency one. they can tell you the outlook and if the pup is in pain.

i was caretaker of my wife's cat years ago before we got married. cat got cancer in her mouth and the tumor grew to where we had to inject liquefied food down her mouth. cat was moving around and all but seemed to literally be starving itself cause food couldn't go down her throat. that is the kind of thing when you know it is time.

no need to rush it unless the pup seems to be in pain

ETA: wife says emergency vets cost a fortune. even if you are taking your dog in to get put down, you would want to take it to your vet anyway.

Do you think your dog enjoys to wake up in the morning?

Yeah, emergency vets aren't cheap but if you really care for your pet you'll pay the price. That said, when my dog ( :( ) had to see the vet on Thanksgiving, our vet was closed, another local was open, and after seeing that one they sent us to an emergency vet in the "big city". The local vet visit was more expensive. They might have tacked on a "holiday" surcharge, can't remember.

Try calling your vet- usually they have an emergency number. If this is your long time vet then maybe they'll come out to you/open up.

Sorry man and good luck. Never easy.

she is back eating fine now today...and moving around all over the place. hoping over objects and such.

so hip mobility etc looks good.

How did you keep your dog alive for 17 years without taking her to the vet just to see what they think? It'll be like $100 - if they think it's time, they'll tell you.
