As always, I'm not looking ahead - just posting them as they're played on SXM's channel 7. I'd like to apologize for last week's. It was horrible. I think this one will be better.
Man, I love these guys. Of course, all of the hip rock critics hated them because they didn't write their own songs. No, all they did was have the sense to go find people who were among the best songwriters of the day and record those (you know, like anyone with any sense would do). They had 3 distinct lead singers and that band could play any damned thing. Those records STILL sound good.
Euro(ok, Canadian, but from Montreal - same thing)-Disco before it became a thing. So it's a little looser than what came later. He'd have a monster hit a few years down the line with a song that's still played in dentist offices everywhere.
I hated this record when it came out and, after careful consideration as a thoughtful adult, I can honestly say I was wrong. It's even worse than I remember :X
They are kinda forgotten now, but the Spinners had a great run in the 70s and Phillipe(sp?) Wynn had a great, distinctive voice - sort of like Sam Moore with the rough edges sanded off.
Power pop, baby! Another woefully underrated band - like 3 Dog Night - that had a huge influence on what came after. Big Star gets all of the props now, but these guys were better.
Their lyrics are dumb as ####, but they always did some nice things with their band. This one, "Sister Goldenhair", and "Ventura Highway" are all fine records
Oh, for Christ's sake. Mac wrote "In The Ghetto", so he kind of gets a pass from me but this song is just awful. Plus, he was in "The Sting II" which is unforgivable
The last song I can remember my great-great aunt liking as we listened to the radio. I had it on one of the Top 40 channels. She said (paraphrasing): "Mister Jimmy and I used to dance to songs like this"
6. "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" - John Lennon
Thank God Elton John got a hold of him, because most of what Lennon attempted to do in the 70s was trash. It only lasted 3 minutes, but it was by far the best thing John did after he left the Beatles
Ditto, I just now checked in and read this thread, I really enjoyed your comments about each song. 1974 was right in my wheelhouse of listening to local AM radio and it played the countdown each week.
