AT40 - This Week In 1974 (1 Viewer)

Uruk-Hai

Footballguy
As always, I'm not looking ahead - just posting them as they're played on SXM's channel 7. I'd like to apologize for last week's. It was horrible. I think this one will be better.

40. "You Got The Love" - Rufus

Now, THAT's the way to kick it off

39. "Nothing From Nothing" - Billy Preston

This show already has more soul than the entirety of last week's.

38. "After The Goldrush" - Prelude

Wow. I haven't heard this, I bet, since it came out. I'm not a Neil Young fan, but at least the people on this version can sing

36. "Angie Baby" - Helen Reddy

This record is stupid, but it's also creepy as hell. Plus, Helen had this almost-lisp that stirred little Uruk's longings

35. "Brickyard Blues" - Three Dog Night

Man, I love these guys. Of course, all of the hip rock critics hated them because they didn't write their own songs. No, all they did was have the sense to go find people who were among the best songwriters of the day and record those (you know, like anyone with any sense would do). They had 3 distinct lead singers and that band could play any damned thing. Those records STILL sound good.

34. "Second Avenue" - Art Garfunkle

Artie used to get blasted by critics for being a grown-up castrati. But, while he got too mannered for my taste sometimes, he had sneaky soul.

33. "Sha La La" - Al Green

Al Green could sing a Donald Trump speech and make it sound good. If there's a heaven, I want Green's singing in the background for the everafter.

32. "People Gotta Move" - Gino Vanelli

Euro(ok, Canadian, but from Montreal - same thing)-Disco before it became a thing. So it's a little looser than what came later. He'd have a monster hit a few years down the line with a song that's still played in dentist offices everywhere.

31. "Wishing You Were Here" - Chicago

I think the Beach Boys sang back up. Love the atmosphere on this record.

30. "Rockin Soul" - Hues Corporation

A knockoff of their huge, earlier hit "Rock The Boat". Pretty meh, but better than about 30 of the songs in last week's countdown, amIright y'all?

29 "So You're A Star" - Hudson Brothers

Holy crap. I had forgotten all about these guys. Didn't they have their own variety show for a minute or two? AND a cartoon?

Anyway, this isn't a good record :butstillbetterthanmostofthe1979countdownfromlastweek:

27. "Honey Honey" - ABBA

They hadn't quite figured it out yet, but they were getting close with this one.

26. "When Will I See You Again" - Three Degrees

I have no idea what the lead singer looks like, but I've been in love with her for 42 years

25. "I Can Help" - Billy Swan

I hated this record when it came out and, after careful consideration as a thoughtful adult, I can honestly say I was wrong. It's even worse than I remember  :X

23. "Love Don't Love Nobody" - Spinners

They are kinda forgotten now, but the Spinners had a great run in the 70s and Phillipe(sp?) Wynn had a great, distinctive voice - sort of like Sam Moore with the rough edges sanded off.

20. "Overnight Sensation" - Raspberries

Power pop, baby! Another woefully underrated band - like 3 Dog Night - that had a huge influence on what came after. Big Star gets all of the props now, but these guys were better.

18. "The Need To Be" - Jim Weatherly

I have zero recollection of this song. Probably self-preservation. This is maudlin-on-steroids

17. "My Melody Of Love" - Bobby Vinton

Ok, now I'm having flashbacks to last week. The last two songs are threatening to whitewash every last ounce of soul out of this countdown.

16. "Do It Baby" - Miracles

A little below par for them, but washes the bad taste of the last two records away

15. "Then Came You" - Dionne Warwick & the Spinners

Perfect mid-70s pop. Still sounds good today unlike....oh, I don't know - let's pick a name entirely at random - Yes

10. "Tin Man" - America

Their lyrics are dumb as ####, but they always did some nice things with their band. This one, "Sister Goldenhair", and "Ventura Highway" are all fine records

9. "Stop And Smell The Roses" - Mac Davis

Oh, for Christ's sake. Mac wrote "In The Ghetto", so he kind of gets a pass from me but this song is just awful. Plus, he was in "The Sting II" which is unforgivable

8. "Sweet Home Alabama" - Skynyrd

Love the piano part in this and Ronnie Van Zant was one of the best singers of the 70s. Matter of fact, the whole band was great

7. "Steppin Out" - Tony Orlando & Dawn

The last song I can remember my great-great aunt liking as we listened to the radio. I had it on one of the Top 40 channels. She said (paraphrasing): "Mister Jimmy and I used to dance to songs like this"

6. "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" - John Lennon

Thank God Elton John got a hold of him, because most of what Lennon attempted to do in the 70s was trash. It only lasted 3 minutes, but it was by far the best thing John did after he left the Beatles

5. "Can't Get Enough" - Bad Company

Ok, I guess. I was never a BC fan and always thought they were pretty boring. Rodgers was a good singer, but an awful writer.

4. "##### Is Back" - Elton John

This mutha rocks. Bernie Taupin's lyrics never have, and never will, make sense to me but Elton sells the hell out of them. Love this one

2. "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" - BTO

Yep - I know this song is trash. And yep - I know it's lame as hell.

DO. NOT. CARE.

Any love is good love

Ditto, I just now checked in and read this thread, I really enjoyed your comments about each song. 1974 was right in my wheelhouse of listening to local AM radio and it played the countdown each week.
