AT40 - This Week In 1975 (1 Viewer)

14. "Bungle In The Jungle" - Jethro Tull

Christ, I'd almost rather listen to Donnie & Marie than this. It's ok, I guess, but there's no "there" there. I've whiplashed back from 70s prog
not even the most devoted Jethros liked this snotbiscuit of airplay bait

24. "You Got The Love" - Rufus

Sex on vinyl, or about as close as it gets
Seems like this one should be listened to on vinyl with all the pops and imperfections.  Makes it more human and intimate.

Any and all influence Rufus had on Prince is welcome.

12. "Must Have Got Lost" - J Geils
Peter Wolf was a god to me when he was a DJ @ WBCN (Boston's underground station) in the 60s. When he was phyllin it, he'd exclaim (in his whiteboy soul patter), "I feel so good today, i wanna climb the Empire State Building and beat my meat right down to the street!"

23. "Some Kind Of Wonderful" - Grand Funk

I have no defense for this band or this record, but I will fight you to the death for my right to love their entire discography. I'm Shinin' On
Great track, well-crafted song.  Heard it reworked as an under-the-lamppost group vocal, as if Bob Gaudio wrote it riding the bus on the way to a Four Seasons rehearsal.  It works, but I like the keyboard's role in the original so much, tying together the pop and gospel elements.

9. "Please Mr Postman" - Carpenters

I love Karen's voice, but all of the excitement of the Marvelette's record is gone. This record is flaccid.

20. "Fire" - Ohio Players

Metallica & Nirvana sound like 3rd-graders compared to this riff. The Players backed it up with "Fopp", if you need more evidence.
These guys are usually a warm-weather jam for me, but hearing this makes me want to play their entire discography.

starred in my favorite "Sanford and Son" episode - we even got a heavy dose of Rollo in that one

absolutely adored this tune - still in my daily rotation
This report is going to send me down a most delightful YouTube rabbit hole searching for 70s musicians appearing on TV shows.

6. "Angie Baby" - Helen Reddy

Ok, this is a ####### odd song. I don't care who is singing it (I bet Alice Cooper wishes he had got hold of it). Say what you want about Reddy, but she SELLS this one.

15. "Morning Side Of The Mountain" - Donnie & Marie Osmond

I'm sorry. I relish (hah!) cheese (double-hah!), but this one don't do it for me

13. "One Man Woman/One Woman Man" - Paul Anka/Odia Coates

Appears we're (or at least, me) are locked in schlock. #### it - let's roll
Three reasons to hate white people.

10. "Mandy" - Barry Manilow

This is one awesome ballad, I don't give a damn what anyone says.
Quality pop song, but all i can think of is that, about this time, i spread some of the wealth of becoming a R&R thousandaire by renting a big seacaptain's house in Salem and cutting two of the three floors out as practice/crash rooms for musician friends. Always a party going on (in fact, 9 of us got clap from the same girl in one wkend). Anyway, one of our big things was using "Mandy" as the musical equivalent of "The Aritocrats" joke - a competition to come up with the filthiest version of "you came & you gave" we could think of. good times.......

3. "Kung Fu Fighting" - Carl Douglas

I can't recall who mentioned it above, but good call.

"Oh, ho oh HO"

8. "Boogie On Reggae Woman" - Stevie Wonder

The greatest artist of the 70s just messin' around
It was probably intricately crafted, but Stevie and the band make it sound like they made it up on the spot, a jam session where someone remembered to hit the "RECORD" button.

I will fight you over this one. I also take back my backing Danny Manning as a MT Rushmore college player and am inserting some player from OK - Mookie?
Oh it is ON NOW MOTHER####ER!

:banned:

I will say this, I am glad this song exists for its role in an awesome Randy Moss diss track in the BradyFan discography.

1. "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" - Elton John

This record is in a tie with EWF's "Got To Get You Into My Life" as my favorite Beatles' cover

Never ever ever ever would've guessed that went to #1.

Great version, brought more to the song than his take on Pinball Wizard for the Tommy movie.

And now I get to think about what my favorite Beatles cover is...

Ok, I'm out. Keep reaching for the stars.

(Chris Wilcox annihliated Drew Gooden)
That timeout when Juan Dixon left the huddle, ran out of the arena, found a phone booth, changed into his Superman suit, and got back in the building before the commercials ended... :kicksrock:

Always great fun countin 'em down with y'all, especially when the numbers get smaller and the hits get bigger.

interesting sidebar here ... Elton bet Lennon that it would hit #1 - Lennon scoffed, and promised he'd perform it live with Elton if it did ...

Lennon's last concert appearance - Thanksgiving night, 1975 - at the Garden, settling his debt.

ETA: hmmm, my memory was a bit off - the bet was on if "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" hit #1, which it did, the week prior to Thanksgiving '74 - and Lennon honored the bet by giving his last public concert performance on Thanksgiving night '74, joining Elton on the Garden stage for "Lucy"
