Atlanta offense? (1 Viewer)

Well for example...What we can expect from Denver or Green Bay's offenses are most heavily influenced the coaching scheme. Sorry, I guess I should have been more complete in my question.

I think Atlanta is going to have a middle of the pack offense.

Best case: Redman is a top-20 QB, Turner is a top-15 RB and White is a top-10 WR

Worst case: Redman loses job to Harrington, then to rookie. Turner is no more successful than Dunn and loses more carries than most think and White was a 1 year wonder.

Likely scenario: Redman starts until December then gives way to a rookie. Turner is consistently average and finishes in the top-20(ala LenDale) White finishes in the 15-20 range but tails off when Redman gets benched.

With Turner in the fold joining Norwood in the backfield I would expect a lot of runs to try to cover up for the inadaquacies of Redman, Harrington or a rookie QB.

So I would expect a ball control "run, run and if that doesn't work they might try to run the ball" offense.

Furthermore, the responsibility of the feasibility of that offense holding up through the second half will fall to the defense to keep things close.

They ran a ball control offense last year too, the problem was they had to abandon it because they weren't getting yards and opposing teams were scoring a lot. Its tough to stick to the run when its 14-0 and your team is averaging less than 4ypc.Really they won't be much different than last year unless Turner lives up to the hype. I'm kinda hedging on that one.

That's about what I see, if they have Redman under center they may have a shot at 6-10 but they aren't going to score many points. They have three picks in the 2nd round, right? If so, I think if they go Dorsey in round 1, use two of their three second rounders to trade up and get the best OT they can get, and then nab Henne in the 2nd they'll have a nice head start to 09 and won't kill themselves in 08.If they go r-tarded and draft Ryan #1 though I think this team and this offense will be a trainwreck in 08. This is why I initially said ask me in two weeks.

More ball control run oriented offense. Turner might sneek into the top 10 but that is really going to depend on if Redman can keep defenses from crowding the line. I know I am very optimistic about Turner but I think he has the skills that match the Falcons blocking scheme very well. I think the Falcons draft a QB but not with the first pick (one of the Longs or Dorsey is most likely).

Turner will be among the top 10 in rushes if he stays healthy (which I'm doubting), but his Yards per rush will resemble Lendale White.

White will be a decent, but inconsistent WR. Over 1,000/6, but many games below 40 yards.

Robinson / Jenkins will have some nice plays, nothing spectacular.

Redman will be a decent backup, but PPG will rank in the bottom 1/3 of the starters.

Defense will carry this team to close to .500

The problem being the OLine personnel. They built this OLine to thrive in a ZBS (smaller but more mobile), Smith is reportedly bringing in a power running game, which doesn't mesh well with a smaller OLine. I like Turner...a lot, but he's in for a long year behind that line.

The only thing we can expect from Atlanta is uncertainty.

Obviously given the $$$ paid to Turner they plan on making him their bellcow. While we don't KNOW if he's up to the task, certainly he will be given every opportunity to prove he's a workhorse. The QB situation is very much in flux, and I think Atlanta hopes Redman plays well enough in camp to keep a rookie (I'm sure they take a QB, whether it's early or a later round developmental prospect remains to be seen) from having to play. As others have mentioned, the offensive line is a huge question mark, as is the state of the defense. It's great to declare yourselves a ball control, power running team but it's another thing entirely to execute that style of play if your line can't wear down opponents and your defense can't keep the game close.

What they may want to do and what they will be able to do will likely be two totally different things.

eta...sorry, didn't see Woods response right above...

:goodposting: The Falcons' first minicamp with the new coaching staff opened yesterday, and the main focus is figuring out if Redman has what it takes to run the offense this year or not. Here's the article at the AJC discussing the topic yesterday.
New Falcons coach Mike Smith, and his overhauled coaching staff, will see Redman in person, beginning Monday at a three-day mini-camp. What they want to know is if Redman is good enough to be the starter again in the fall.

"This will give us the opportunity to confirm some of the thoughts we may have on personnel — or it may change our minds," Smith said. "We'll meet and maybe we'll say, 'We have to do some things [in the draft/trades/free-agency] or maybe we really don't because we feel comfortable where our roster is.' As we go through this, what we'll see will spark discussion if we feel we'll need to go in different directions."
I'm keeping a close eye on reports from this mini-camp in the AJC this week. Obviously, the draft will tell us a lot about what is decided after the workouts, as well. My .02.
