Here is my second version. I may do a third before the draft time permitting.
Have at it. Feedback appreciated.
Pre-draft trade:
To Denver # 9 / To Detroit #15 and #61
1. Houston Texans – Reggie Bush, RB
The Texans front office doesn’t find a dance partner and they grab the dynamic Bush. I don’t like it much and feel they would be better off building the team through their interior lines. I originally had the Jets moving up here but the chances of that are looking pretty slim now.
2. New Orleans Saints – Matt Leinart, QB
I’m not buying this three team trade rumor where two are teams get “bought off” for not drafting certain players. This type of thing just doesn’t happen. Oakland may move up ahead of the Titans for Leinart, but I think the Raiders will take their chances and stand pat. Condon keeps his promise and Leinart goes #2. Brees is pissed off but his contract affords the Saints the luxury of drafting Leinart and gives Benson the ammo to move the team to LA.
3. Tennessee Titans – Vince Young, QB
The Titans add their QB of the (near?) future. Volek is more than capable of holding down the fort for two years until Young is ready to produce. Adams and the scouting department win out over Fisher and Chow.
4. Denver Broncos – Vernon Davis, TE
To Denver - #4 / To New York - #9 (from DET) and #37
The Broncos are desperate to get Davis and have moved their way up and down the draft board to get their man. It is obviously very early for a TE, but if this happens they won’t be giving up more than Cleveland did for Winslow. I’ve debated whether the trade will happen with the Jets or Green Bay, but this trade works out well for both teams. The Jets get into prime position for their man and pick up an extra 2nd round pick to boot.
5. Green Bay Packers – Mario Williams, DE
The Packers get a gift as Williams, arguably the best player in the draft, falls into their laps. Trading down was probably being considered but those thoughts ended when Williams was still available.
6. Philadelphia Eagles – D’Brickashaw Ferguson, OT
To Philadelphia - #6 / To San Francisco - #14, #45 and 2007 3rd round pick
San Fran gets burned by the Broncos, if they were truly interested in Davis. No rumors to substantiate this, but if Ferguson drops the Eagles are primed to jump ahead of a pack of hungry teams looking for a 10-year stud at tackle.
7. Oakland Raiders – Winston Justice, OT
This Raiders pick still has me stumped. Rumors of them drooling over Young and Leinart have me doubting a lot of what I’ve written above, but Al Davis likes to go in his own direction. Gallery moving to LT opens up a spot for Winston on the right side.
8. Buffalo Bills – Brodrick Bunkley, DT
Buffalo needs help with their porous rush defense and could use a solid anchor up the middle, it is really just a question of which DT they take. The buzz has them more interested in Bunkley than Ngata and he fits their scheme much better. I also wouldn’t rule out an offer from the Vikings to move up on the Jets.
9. New York Jets – Jay Cutler, QB
To New York - #9 (from DET) and #37 / To Denver - #4
Detroit trades out from #9, as they feel they can still receive value at #15 and get an additional late 2nd round pick. The Jets are enamored with Cutler and position themselves perfectly to get him and in the process add another early 2nd round pick.
10. Arizona Cardinals – A.J. Hawk, OLB
Dennis Green has says that he is happy with his RBs then he goes out and signs James. He signed Warner to a contract, so could he make a push to move up and take Young or Cutler? It’s possible but not too likely. Not the hugest need, but the Cardinals could do a lot worse and continue to improve a solid young defense.
11. Saint Louis Rams – Michael Huff, CB/S
The signing of Will Witherspoon may end up having the biggest impact of any this off-season and allows the Rams to fill other needs through the draft. Huff is the logical choice since he is arguably BPA and fills a huge need.
12. Cleveland Browns – Haloti Ngata, DT
The Browns have filled most of their major areas of need through free agency. Ngata will be a nice complement to Washington and Crennel is on record saying he is a Brown if he is still available when the Browns are on the clock.
13. Baltimore Ravens – Chad Greenway OLB
The talent level starts to take a bit of a dip here. The Ravens generally don’t reach for players and would prefer to drop a little as they are targeting a few players that will likely still be available later in the round. Greenway is arguably BPA at this point. Carpenter, who is moving up most draft boards, and Williams who is sliding on many others, are also possibilities.
14. San Francisco 49ers – DeAngelo Williams, RB
To San Francisco - #14, #45 and #5th / To Philadelphia #6
I’m drinking the kool-aid and have bought into the 49ers interest in Williams. His college success, overall ability and superior skills to Barlow and Gore make this a no-brainer. The talent level at OLB will still be there at #22.
15. Detroit Lions – Ernie Sims, OLB
To Detroit - #15 and #61 / To Denver - #9
The Harrington era is over and the Lions have two new arms in town (Kitna and McCown), so QB is not a pressing need any longer. Millen makes the picks, but I think Marinelli will have more influence on the type of players that are taken than the previous head coaches.
16. Miami Dolphins – Jimmy Williams, CB
All of the Dolphins free agent pick ups look solid but unspectacular. The Dolphins are without a 2nd round pick from the Culpepper trade so whichever position they don’t fill they will need to pick up in the 3rd round. Williams was a sure fire top ten earlier this spring and I don’t think he will fall out of the top 20.
17. Minnesota Vikings – Bobby Carpenter, OLB
I’m still not convinced that the Vikings won’t try and take a run at one of the big three QB’s with their extra 2nd round pick. OLB is a consistent weakness for the Vikings and Carpenter is gaining momentum as of late.
18. Dallas Cowboys – Kamerion Wimbley, DE/OLB
They got Owens so I’m backing off from my previous Chad Jackson pick. An OLB like Wimbley (or Lawson) will be a solid pick and help take pressure off Ware.
19. San Diego Chargers – Chad Jackson, WR
The Chargers are looking pretty good but are lacking depth almost everywhere. If they want Rivers to succeed the Chargers are going to run Tomlinson consistently but they will also need to provide him with multiple playmakers. Many of the SD natives are scoffing at the Chargers taking a wide receiver, but I’ll side with Rob Rang.
20. Kansas City Chiefs – Antonio Cromartie, CB
The Chiefs can use help at almost every position on defense, but cornerback may be their biggest need. The Chiefs haven’t been rumored to be in the Javon Walker sweepstakes, but would it be out of the question trading the #20 to Green Bay for Walker and the #36?
21. New England Patriots – DeMeco Ryans, OLB
Ryans just seems like a Patriot kind of player and fills a big need. Maroney would also be a nice addition and a possible replacement for Dillon.
22. San Francisco 49ers – Manny Lawson, OLB/DE
His stock appears to be dropping lately, but the 49ers can’t go wrong if they just line him up at OLB as a pure pass rusher.
23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Donte Whitner, FS
I had the Bucs going for CB (Ashton Youboty) with my first mock but I’m switching gears under the assumption that they will lose out on Charles Woodson, who they were looking at moving to safety.
24. Cincinnati Bengals – Jonathon Joseph, CB
Bengals are hard to figure and could go in many different directions. Other holes have been plugged through free agency, so I’m guessing CB.
25. Indianapolis Colts – Laurence Maroney, RB
To Indianapolis - #25 / To New York #30 and # 94
The Colts are worried about a run on running backs (Panthers, Jets, Jaguars) and aren’t assured of getting one in either the 1st or 2nd rounds if they don’t move up. Maroney will likely share time with Rhodes until he can pick up the playbook, and more importantly, pick up the blitz.
26. Chicago Bears – Jason Allen, FS
I just can’t see them taking a TE in the 1st round when there is such great depth at the position in this year’s draft. A safety is a bigger need with the recent trade of Mike Green to Seattle.
27. Carolina Panthers – LenDale White, RB
Who am I to argue with the consensus pick for the Panthers.
28. Jacksonville Jaguars – Tye Hill, CB
The Jaguars, like the Panthers, do not have a lot of significant needs. The Jaguars have a huge need at OLB, but Hill fills another need area and is a solid pick this late in the 1st round.
29. New York Jets – Nick Mangold, C
The Jets take “the best center to come out in ten years” to team with Cutler. The Jets interior offensive line has been destroyed and needs fresh meat.
30. New York Giants – Gabe Watson, DT
To New York - #30 and #94 / To Indianapolis #25
There biggest weakness is at DT. Holmes is also and option since Toomer is on his last legs and Carter hasn’t shown much.
31. Seattle Seahawks – Santonio Holmes, WR
Seattle has the luxury of drafting BPA, as they do not have a lot of holes to fill.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers – David Joseph, OG
Like Ryans in New England, Joseph seems to fit the mold as a Steeler.
Have at it. Feedback appreciated.
