Wondering if someone would be kind enough to post say the top 15 RB's from your auction and the dollar values. That would allow us to rationalize what might be the best combo based on price. Please use recent auctions

I know I am relying on others to share the data so thanks very much - but once we get the data I think we can have good conversation here.

I think one place I've gone wrong in the past is trying to correlate draft position with auction prices. They do not correlate.

I found this a useful tool:

http://football.myfantasyleague.com/2013/aav

And I also plugged in predicted or sufggested values from FBG (though I could never find a list that perfectly fit my league). It seemed to me at any event that the FBG predicted prices were way low.

I can tell you that in my Saturday draft the RBs were through the roof. This is a 19 year old league with 12 teams, 2 sites, plus a couple others who are remote. I'd say this was influenecd by the switch of the 3rd WR position to a flex rb/wr/te position because people valued RBs over WRs. I might also think this was because of the depth at RB this year.

Completed last night.

Kind of skewed given the budget ($500) and scoring (1 PPR, 5 for rushing TDs, 0.04 for Return Yards). Roster positions were 1/2/3/1/1 (Flex)/1/1 with WRs heavily weighted via PPR and TDs being worth 6 while QBs were much lower scoring wise (4 per TD).

Sorted by price. Number on left is when they were nominated. Listed the Top 20.

Thanks for the list - so where do you see the change in value? So if ADP is overpriced or clost to market, isee Foster and Rice as value. And C Johnson as good value.

For me, I started seeing the value about mid-way through the RB nominations. Also partly given the scoring system, guys like Reggie Bush, Sproles, MJD, and Chris Johnson represented good values.

A lot of it was also dependent on the other teams "having" to spend big to get a RB after the first 8-10 were off the board and seeing roughly what their $$ values were. The early nominated players were all going for $90+ at every position and later on it trended down to a more "reasonable" $45-$65 range.

This is close to our valuation. Again, it looks like Foster, Rice and CJ are the deals

Please include starting roster requirements, scoring settings, and league sizes. Otherwise we're comping apples and oranges, fellas.

I don't know if it's apples and oranges - if you have a comparative valuation you can see the value. For instance Rice for 25% less than Peterson indicates a deal.

Yeah - I think generally, the top player or two at a position will go very high, and the last player or 2 in the top tier will go unreasonably high.

Probably the best strategy would be, if you're targeting a player like McCoy or Richardson, to get them on the auction block as close to the middle of that top tier of 9 or so RBs, so you avoid the early premier player spending, and avoid the later scarcity panic spending.

Your getting to the point I am looking for - generally we know the top 2-3 RBs will probably overspent.

The trick is trying to determine where the $=value and where $<value. Got to run but will be studying this a little tomorrow.

For my own benefit what is the reasoning behind a $500 cap???? Other than to make the auction 4 hours longer than it needs to be?

From looking through the thread, it seems that MJD consistently comes in at a good to great value IMO. I realize the concerns, but the risk/reward seems there when you can grab him for a mid #2 price.

Agreed - it looks like Rice, CJohnson, MJD are best values - providing you like their prosepcts for 2013

I have an auction coming up for a 16 team league, non-ppr, 1/2/3/1(flex)/1/1/1, all TD's 6 and $200 auction budget and I have auction data going back 3 years for how this league drafts. What I'm struggling with is that QB's already go for a ridiculous premium. Using last year as an example, top QB went for $62 and worst starter (16th) went for $16. Every QB between 1-16 was overpriced, elites were less overpriced (only $3-7 over value price from VBD app), whereas the lower tiered QB's were $8-15 over value price.

A common trend I will see is that the elite players per skill position (other than QB) come at a value (less than projected VBD value), then the value drops off immensely for the rest of the n-starter position players where you end up paying a premium, and value re-emerges after say the top 32 RB's or WR's.

Last season I thought I was in a good position by getting Aaron Rodgers (62) and Arian Foster (75) since it was a 16-teamer (this year's RB1 the VBD app shows $98 so $75 would still be a "discount"). Foster below his FBG VBD Auction value and Rodgers probably at or slightly above (knowing that the % overpaid would be less than a QB 2-3 tiers lower). The problem as always is after spending 68.5% of your budget on 2 players it severely hamstrings your ability to get decent depth after that point.

Sometimes it is better to overpay for players ranked in the middle to the end of the positional starting rankings since you are paying half as much per player in most cases, unlike serpentine auctions where value is dictated based on position vs. ADP, in an auction you don't have a similar measure and you can't wait for a player to come in under your perceived dollar value. First season I tried doing that I ended up having to play QB roulette every week with QB's ranked 24-26.

For my own benefit what is the reasoning behind a $500 cap???? Other than to make the auction 4 hours longer than it needs to be?
Partly just for the fun factor TBH (I wasn't the Commish). Also it allowed for some inflated values with the cheaper players settling around the $6-$10 range.

Also the $200 budget was really limiting (more so than $500). Spend $100 on 2 stud players and suddenly you've spent 50% of your budget whereas I was able to buy ADP, Charles, and McCoy while later getting Ben Roethlisberger & Sam Bradford for a combined $19 (although my WRs are very hit/miss).

Also it wasn't that long time wise. We started at 9:30 ET and finished up around 11:45 PM ET.

i can see this though because your league is TD heavy for QB. 6 pts. for all TD's is going to inflate the top QB's fairly heavily over 4 pts as in the majority of leagues. Just adjust accordingly. I would go heavy on a top QB in that format too. Think about it. Guys like Rodgers, Brees, Manning who will throw for 32-38 TDs v. the next tier of Cam, Kaep, RGIII who will throw for 20-25. That's roughly 4.5 pts extra per game (based on 16 week season). That's a huge bump. From what you're saying though, the entire league is putting a premium on QB, so it should level out for the other positions. If that's the case, I'm not sure how you are going to be hamstrung on ability to get depth.

This might be off topic, but I'm asking since I'm a little nervous heading into my first every big money auction this Sunday. Do you guys use the DD during your auction drafts and have you found good success using it? In that past I've simply entered in my own custom projections into the DD and then looked to see which players came out as top values compared to adp/average auction prices and formed a plan from that, with a backup "B" and "C"plan for every player that i was targeting just in case things got a little crazy. Of course, I'd adjust on the fly if a major bargain became available. This has served me well in the past in low stakes leagues, but I was curious to know how many of you experienced auction players use the DD?

RB's from last night's $200 auction. 0.5PPR, start 1/2/2/1/1/1 plus a flex. The league awards significant premiums to K and DST's vs. standard leagues, so this boosts their prices and consequently slightly deflates skill-position prices. With that said:

Adrian Peterson, Min $60
Arian Foster, Hou $58
C.J. Spiller, Buf $58
Marshawn Lynch, Sea $55
Ray Rice, Bal $55
Doug Martin, TB $55
Jamaal Charles, KC $54
LeSean McCoy, Phi $51
Trent Richardson, Cle $50
Alfred Morris, Wsh $48
Matt Forte, Chi $45
Steven Jackson, Atl $40
Stevan Ridley, NE $35
Chris Johnson, Ten $33
David Wilson, NYG $32
Frank Gore, SF $29
Maurice Jones-Drew, Jac $28
Eddie Lacy, GB $27
Reggie Bush, Det $24
DeMarco Murray, Dal $22
Giovani Bernard, Cin $21
Darren McFadden, Oak $20

It's been said that you can basically throw RB2-9 into a hat this year, and this draft certainly backs that theory up. Personally I got AP, and then picked up Darren Sproles about two hours into the auction for ........ ten bucks. :lmao:
