B. Favre and J. Kitna (1 Viewer)

Both Favre and Kitna have been producing soild numbers so far this year. Kitna was the #9 QB and Favre the #13 QB in FBG scoring going into this week. I know the Favre topic has been covered to death in the media, but I have no idea what the rest of the year holds for these two. If they keep the starting jobs and continue with their current production, both will be very servicable for any fantasy team. But, for their owners, the big concearn has to be the coaching staff deciding to go in a different direction, even if the QB's are putting up good numbers and may not be the problem. This has happened before with aging QB's if I remember correctly.

So what do you all think? Any inside homer info would be helpful. Should fantasy owners feel safe with Kitna and Favre at QB, based on their performance to date? Or should they start searching for other options because as the loses mount, they younger back-ups may get a chance?

This is a good question, especially for Kitna owners. Is McCown the QB of the future in Detroit? If the Lions are out of playoff contention early, with McCown take over the starting job?

Favre - You cant bench a guy who has the longest running streak of starts. It would be a public relations disaster.

Also - Favre is going to likely have a chance at breaking Marinos TD record, which would be a major event in GB as well as the NFL. Granted the record will only stand for a few years, but that might be the most coveted QB record there is.

Kitna on the other hand might be benched, but he is doing an OK job.

There has been ZERO mention of McCown in Detroit....Quite the opposite. Kitna is receiving much praise for holding the fort together amidst terrible oline play and ridiculous amounts of injuries. He's not going anywhere. I doubt McCown sees the field this year at all - barring injury of course.

i would think millen is trying to keep his job and would prefer the lions go with the vet to help the record be um, respectable.

kitna is doing enough to keep his job, i dont think they are going to throw the kid to the wolves. i think they want kitna to try and get this system in place and working before they make the move which keeps his job safe.

favre plays as long as he wants....altough id love to see him on a winner. imagine what he could be doing in miami right now

This is great to hear. While I wouldn't say Kitna has been great, from looking at the box scores and stats I thought he has been one of the few bright spots for the Lions so far. I hope the coaches agree for as long as possible.

kitna needs to stop with the turnovers and the lions need to win some games... otherwise, even though mccown or orlovsky might not be "the future", it's usually natural progression for losing teams to try someone else at QB if the starter is a journeyman.

Kitna had no chance on 2 of the turnovers, and the last one was on 4th down when he had to try and make something happen. Losing Roy Williams hurt big time, or I think he would have had a monster day. Plus, even though Kitna is "old", he doesn't have a lot of miles on him. Carrying a clipboard isn't that taxing on the body..

They are each the best QBs on their team. Not much more to predict beyond that.BTW, there is not a chance in heck that Brett Favre is Green Bay Packer and is not starting for that team.

To be fair, on Kitna's last pick returned for the TD, it was 4th down at the end of the game. His protection broke down & while he was running for his life and being dragged down, he HAD to try & make something happen, otherwise the game would've ended right then & there on downs. The fumble returned for a TD was plain and simply, blown line blocking assignment. Minny defender just strolled right through the middle of the line & was on Kitna at almost the same time as the snapped ball reached his hands.

I don't put either of those turnovers on Kitna.

EDIT:

On Favre, I agree with others.

Dude is a walking talking living legend in Green Bay & the entire NFL for that matter. He's continuously adding to the consecutive games starteded record & moving in on some other serious QB records.

No way he gets benched, unless he wants to be benched.

I would say typically being old might mean you get benched sooner, rather than later. Because if you're young - maybe you need to work out kinks in real play, whereas if you're old - if you're still screwing up, there's less hope for eventual improvement.

However, Favre is a totally separate case. He's not going to be benched.

Also, it sounds like Kitna is in pretty good shape too. He's playing pretty well considering, there's not some QB with tons of potential waiting to get a chance to play, and it's not like Kitna is so old as to be clearly not going to be the guy. He could be around for a few more years for sure, so there's no reason to give up on him so fast.

In Kitna's case, I've been under the impression Martz really likes the guy in his offense. Not that he's the long term answer, and I would imagine they look to draft a QB, but as long as he's relatively productive I dont think he sees the bench. The options aren't really attractive.

throwing ints?
List of guys with more ints than Favre so far:Ben Roethlisberger - 7

Chris Simms - 7

Matt Hasselbeck - 7

Drew Bledsoe - 7

Charlie Frye - 9

Jon Kitna - 6

List of guys tied with Favre so far:

Eli Manning - 5

Chad Pennington - 5

Byron Leftwhich - 5

Kurt Warner - 5

And that's with over 200 attempts, more than any QB in the league.

I got these stats from NFL.com, so I'm not sure if they've been updated for this week. So that's 10 other NFL QBs who have thrown as many or more ints than Favre this season. While Favre hasn't played great, he has cut down on the ints.

The closest QB to 420 is Peyton Manning, and at his current pace he won't get there until 2011 -- his 14th season.Nobody else is even close to getting there.

I think Kitna has to start delivering in the win column if he wants to keep his job. If the Lions continue to lose, it would be extremely counterproductive to keep playing a 34 year old QB who doesn't have a future with the team.
