Baltimore Ravens news at 12pm EST (1 Viewer)

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel has resigned, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported Tuesday.

The team will make the announcement official at a noon news conference.

A veteran NFL coach, Fassel was the New York Giants head coach for seven seasons, from 1997 through 2003. His teams posted a 60-56-1 record and won two division titles, made the playoffs three times, and went to Super Bowl XXXV in 2000.

Fassel has also been an assistant coach with the Giants (1991-92), Denver (1993-94), Oakland (1995), Arizona (1996) and Baltimore, starting in 2004.
Hi Jim. Just wanted to let you know that Rick here is going to put together our game plan and I'm going to call the plays from now on. Do you want to resign, or do I need to fire you.
Maybe he'll end up in New Orleans so that Payton can remove his playcalling duties, as was done to him.

Fassell is fired, Billick taking over the offense.
Billick taking over the offense...what does this mean for the offense? I mean, I know the guy is a genius and all, but is he an offensive genius, or real good at physics, or all of the above?
He was the OC at MIN when Randall Cunningham and Randy Moss were there. Randall won the MVP that year right? They lost to the Giants in the NFC title game? Am I correct in all of this or am I throwing stuff out there completely wrong?

This has got to be a first to see a coach or offensive cooridinator get fired when you have a winning record!!! McNair hasn't played a great game yet and came into their offense with minimal preseason work. Their offensive line has played average in say 3 games out of the 6. They played good against the bad teams and bad against the good teams. The first 6 games I can say the playcalling was predictable run Lewis 1st, 2nd 3rd pass to Heap they run a basic offense. This week they actually threw to Lewis or threw when Lewis was in the lineup. This week Lewis actually gets on a roll again with his 9 carries and they go away from him because they were behind. The fact is you can't blame the OC if there are no holes opening up or your QB is making bad throws when he gets time or only plays well in the last quarter. As many turnovers they force and 3 and outs they get this team should be much better scoring wise.

My take and I've said this in other spots: Billick is done in Baltimore, unless he wins BIG. And he can see he will NOT win big with the offense going the way it has. So he hacks the OC, takes over and will sail his own ship.If he makes it, he stays. If not Jeff Fisher will be an excellent fit in Baltimore come 2007Just a humble guess...

Jim Fassel was fired Tuesday as offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, who rank 28th in total offense and have scored 16 points or fewer in half their games.

"Clearly, in order for us to expand on our 4-2 start, we have to have more offensive productivity," coach Brian Billick said Tuesday. "It was my opinion going forward, in order to bring about the level of production that we need offensively, to get where we want to go, that I needed to step back in on a day-to-day basis."

Billick will assume the duties of offensive coordinator, which includes calling the plays on game days.

Billick, a friend of the former New York Giants coach, called the change "one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make.

"I have an obligation to this organization to do what I think is in the best interests of this team, regardless of how difficult those decisions are," he said.

Fassel was in his second year as the Ravens' offensive coordinator after serving a season as a senior consultant to the offense. He was promoted to offensive coordinator after Baltimore fired Matt Cavanaugh following the 2004 season.

From 1997 to 2003, Fassel guided the Giants to two NFC East titles, a conference championship, an appearance in the Super Bowl and a wild-card playoff berth. He was named NFL coach of the year in 1997 and lost the 2001 Super Bowl to Baltimore.

With the Ravens, Fassel struggled unsuccessfully to get positive results from a unit that failed to provide ample support to one of the league's best defenses. Baltimore hoped the addition of quarterback Steve McNair would fuel the offense, but the change didn't bring about the desired results.

Fassel did not immediately return calls Tuesday seeking comment.

Ya know...I'd like to see Fassel in Oakland. His hard @-S-$ persona seems like it would fit perfect there. He's gotta be better than Shell!! Right?
 If it's not clear now that when he was succesful with the Giants it was a result of Sean Payton and John Fox he will further prove it with another ####ty performance as a coach.
yeah don't give him credit for them learning under him
I may give him some credit for Fox but considering Fassel is considered an offensive mind I don't think he did too much. He definitly hindered Payton seeing as he blamed him for the offensive problems than cast him off. Parcells probably helped Payton more as a head coach but it turns out he probably should have given him more reigns over the offense as well.

Think you got it right except it was the Falcons who they lost to when Gary Anderson missed his first kick of the entire season that would have iced the game.

:goodposting: Having Payton and Fox as your coordinators would make even Thiesman look good
Good thing that hack coach from New England had Charlie Weis and Romeo Crenell on his staff.
Nah, we all know that Tom Brady is the real reason behing his success. ;)

:goodposting: The writing is now on the wall... unless the Ravens get to the playoffs - and win at least one or two games this year, Billick will be fired at the end of the season. The owner has already put Billick on a short leash with the media and made clear his expectations of how the team should perform. Starting 4-0 then losing the last two games, Billick could not afford letting this ship sink without a fight. He has now clearly placed himself as the fall-guy if the team continues to underperform, but his "legend" will only gain momentum if the team is able to win the division and do some damage in the playoffs.I am not sure Fisher would be at the top of the Ravens wish list if they do fire Billick and go looking for another HC...

Given Fisher's history with the 46, he'd probably get along just fine keeping Buddy's boy at D-coordinator. And it seems like half the team was playing for him a couple years ago. Introductions wouldn't take very long at all. ;)

He also gave Payton that opportunity and no one else did. He was the first one to let Payton call plays. Young Payton was creative and that year his offense lacked that. The plan was he'd call plays and then Payton would take it back over. However, Payton threw a tantrum. If Walsh or Parcells or Gibbs did this no one would have blinked. That's a coach's prerogative. Do you realize 2 years ago people thought BB might be making defensive calls because Mangini was so "wet behind the ears"? No one barked at that notion. It's such a non-issue. Payton was young and Fassel gave him a chance as O cooridinator. He wouldn't be where he is now without that experience.
