Sounds like Woody Johnson is sending the corporate jet down to ferry Scott back to NJ for the day. Rumor has it the Ravens' offer was 7.5mil, and Scott wants another 400k to 700k more. I think the Jets would go 8.5 and sign him before he gets back on the jet. I belief Scott is the linch pin in Ryan/Tannenbaum's plan this year.

So, if this happens, does Scott play LILB, or does Harris? Jene, care to take a shot at this?

I'd assume that Ryan will want to use Scott the same way he did in Baltimore. Scott was listed as a RILB on their depth chart, but was often moved over the TE or used in some kind of coverage role. David Harris is certainly no Ray Lewis, but he's more of a plugging, run stuffer type. So, probably some bump in value for Scott and neutral to small loss in value for Harris.

Not so fast...

(KFFL) Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports unrestricted free-agent LB Bart Scott (Ravens) has called the Baltimore Ravens to give them a chance to match the offer he has received from the New York Jets, according to a source.

Ravens and Jets continue to play poker

Latest word in Baltimore is that the Ravens have upped their offer to Bart Scott to $42 million over five years, and that Rex Ryan is urging the Jets to one-up that offer. This from Baltimore Sun columnist Mike Preston, who is as plugged into the Ravens' operation as much as anyone.

We'd heard this morning from a source familiar with the Ravens' situation that Scott would keep Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome apprised of his situation, thus giving the Ravens a chance to retain him.

"Bart loves Ozzie, and he promised to keep the lines of communication," the source told us.

The source added that he didn't consider it out of the realm of possibility that the Ravens would keep both Scott AND Ray Lewis.

Stay tuned.

(UPDATE at 3:59 p.m. A source familiar with the Jets' situation tells us things are "status quo" and confirmed that no final agreement has been been reached ... oy.)

First, I knew that the Jets would break the bank for Scott, he was the cornerstone of the entire off season plan for the Jets. If they didn't get him, they were in deep trouble. I did have some word on that from my contacts. Ryan felt he HAD to have an on field leader who knew his system. The defense will revolve around Scott now. I still don't know how that will translate in FF value. I am also sure that Ryan promised Scott that he would be "the man" in his defense. Again, does that mean FF prodution?

In the 46, is it the MLB who is in the gap between the C/ROG gap? With the other 3 LB's over loaded on the weak side, and the SS coming up off RT... that's how I understand it. I'm nowhere near the XnO guy Jene is...

Side note: Corey Ivy was reportedly also in NJ today. I still think (almost certain) the Jets will go CB at 1.17, looking for a man cover corner. Ivy and Lowery would be depth.

Here's a post from my scheme series last season on the 46 front.I don't think Ryan used much 46 since losing Adalius Thomas -- the OLB pass rushing threats just haven't been there and his corners were aging (or injured) and not good enough in man coverage to pull it off. It was a changeup scheme at best over the past couple of seasons.

This defense is likely to be predominately 3-4 on early downs, with mostly one gap concepts along the front seven. It probably won't be that much different in alignment than what Mangini used, but it's likely to be more aggressive in some form or another (whether it be increased blitzing or confusing zone schemes behind).

I'm not sure the Jets yet have the corners or the pass rush to pull off the 46 often, but I'd assume it'd be Harris in the MLB role on those snaps, with Scott and Pace as the stacked OLB to the strong side and Gholston or another speed rusher to the weak side.
