Baseball Contract Question (1 Viewer)

Say PLAYER X has two years remaining on his contract at $5 million each year. If the player and the team both feel that the player is underpaid, can they both agree to change the value to say $9 million a year? Or do they have to sign the player to an extension? If so, can they recalibrate the annual salary.

So in this case, if they wanted to give the guy $9 million a year could they just bumpd his pay? If they wanted to add a year, would it have to be structured $5 + $5 + $17 (new year) = $27 with the ability to rework it to $9 + $9 + $9?

There has to be additional consideration on both sides - i.e., more money, more years. That's why you don't ever see someone just getting more money. He was already contractually obligated to play out his contract.
