Baseball replay (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
This is terrible, right? That's the concensus, I assume.

Can't we just give the crew chief an earpiece that is directly connected to the replay center and have them make on the call corrections, as needed? This whole challenge system is a joke.

I like replay but admit it could be more streamlined. Detroit manager basicly waited as long as he could to go out & challenge and the first one took about 3 minutes, but the next one was only about a minute to reverse.

I like replay, but SF losing because they ran out of challenges? That's dumb. Baseball is the only sport where the ump can witness a play, but not make the call because no one asked him. That's so stupid. And now they've gone and mucked it up with this ridiculous replay system. Horrible.

All scoring plays where there is a play at the plate should be reviewed automatically like the NFL reviews scoring plays. This would be very simple since many games there is never a play at the plate.

They'll tweak it for next season and make it better. I think all remotely questionable scoring plays should be reviewed and not cost the manager a challenge.

EDIT- GURU beat me to the point.

As far as time spent goes we will see less of managers throwing those hissy fits that sometimes went on endlessly.

It will get better I think it's the right thing to do if it can be "streamlined". Best way, IMO, is to have another ump in the booth reviewing plays as they happen and notify the crew if there is something to be overturned. Forget the challenge system... get as many calls right as possible.

This would be phenomenal.

Sadly, I think umps may have too much "pride" to have a lot of calls overturned. I think, by and large. MLB umps do an awesome job and are surprisingly accurate, but they would find that intimidating.

Its terrible. Managers go out and talk with the umps to stall until they get told to challenge or not. Way to think this through MLB

Rule should be, if the manager steps onto the field, they are challenging the play. Any stalling BS get the manager tossed.

I saw a segment on ESPN a few days ago that showed the replay center and followed them as they reviewed a challenge, and overturned the call on the field (bang bang play at 1st). Joe West was the one working with the replay tech (guy showing angles, rewinding/FF, etc) and ultimately made the call. He was going on about how it means so much to have a REAL umpire be the one who is communicating on the other side, how the guys on the field can trust an overturn because it was made by a REAL umpire, etc.

What a crock of ####.

They probably should be concerned.

Go much further down this road and everyone will realize that home plate ump is the only one that's remotely necessary.

Football and basketball refs make subjective judgment calls, mostly. Base umps make clear calls that can be done more accurately every time with technology. The hold up and only reason for them is time, but that can also be solved.

HP ump probably isn't really necessary either, but the subjectivity of the strike zone is one of baseball's most beloved imperfections and is a real part of the game itself.

I actually like the new system. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. And I'm surprised at how cool the umps are with the challenges. Manager just strolls out, says he wants to challenge, and the umps shrug and say OK. Doesn't look like anyone's feelings are getting hurt, and no pride wounded.

As far as how long they take, they're still getting through them faster than a manager/ump shouting match usually takes. And I think all the challenges on opening day totaled less lost time than the average NFL review takes.
