People need to separate a few things things here. One, TT thought Mcarthy was the best coach for the job, which is why he got hired. Two, Bates was pissed off he didn't get the HC job and decided to leave. These are two separate things. Yet we hear people saying things like "why not hire Bates, then maybe Favre would come back, now we may have neither Bates nor Favre!".
The answer is you hire the best person for the job. You don't hire the someone to make their egos feel better, so that you can hold on to some non-existant run to the super bowl one last time. And that's the thing, everyone is thinking "but Brett has a few more years, we can go to the SB again!" Not going to happen. You're not going to turn this team around in one or two years, sorry. You may build the team to become better, but Brett's not going to get another ring in the time he has left.
So TT made the right call. Get your guy who can start building for the future, and let Bates and Favre make their own decisions on theirs. They're big boys, they don't need to be coddled. If anything, this lets the Pack get back into the hunt *faster* because we're not dicking around trying to throw together a team in a year for "one last run".
And what's with all the bandwagon jumpers in this thread? If you want off the bandwagon, see ya, you won't be missed. Part of the reason the return to glory in the 90's was so sweet was because we had to endure the Packers of the 70's and 80's. You people who just pick the hot team every year have no idea what that kind of success after years of mediocrety feels like.
