Bears Interested in Edge? (1 Viewer)

Burning Sensation,

Anthony Thomas put up some decent numbers in those games.. playing behind the same offensive line and the same collection of QB's.. how do we explain that?
Anthony Thomas averaged 3.3 YPC last year. Thomas Jones averaged 4.0, thats pretty significant if you ask me.Also, for the record, LT2 averaged 3.9 YPC, Jesse Chatman averaged 6.0 playing behind the same offensive line with the same collection of QB's, how do you explain that!?!?!?!? ;)

Fact:

Thomas Jones has never carried the ball more than 240 times in a season, and he's never gone over 140 carried before last year.

Edge has averaged 305 carries per year in his career, even with the hideous injury in 01.

Comparing the two in ridiculous. Jones might be on par with Edge in talent if he could stay healthy, but the man has never completed a season. He wont this year. The Bears had better either bring somebody else in or resign A-Train, because T-Jones aint touchin the rock 20 times a game and staying healthy. Thats the bottom line.

As hard as I was on Thomas Jones throughout his career, I must commend him for his 2004 performance. He was on an absolutely AWFUL team last year, and still did decent. His durability is a question, but the re-tooling of the Bear offense is only getting better (signing of Muhsin, for instance).I just don't see the desperate need to cough up a lot for Edge. It doesn't make a lot of sense here. They have much bigger needs right now than RB. Personally, I'm not sold on Grossman, and the rest of the QBs are a disaster, so I'd start there.

From Saturday's Chicago Tribune:Meanwhile, despite a national radio report to the contrary, a team source said the Bears are not planning to get involved in the bidding for Indianapolis free-agent running back Edgerrin James. The Colts, who slapped the franchise tag on James and therefore retain trade rights, are willing to deal him.But the Bears spent $22.5 million on bonuses for wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad and offensive tackle Fred Miller in the last two weeks and don't appear to have room for another major acquisition.Although interested in adding a running back, they are in position to get one with the fourth overall pick in the April 23-24 draft.

Why is everyone knocking Adrian Murrell in here?

He was a top 12 RB in 1996, and I won't soon forget his 199 yard performance that gave the Jets a huge win against the Cards that year. ;)

It's just that some people can't accept that Thomas Jones is a decent RB. I guess if someone doesn't explode onto the scene his first few years it means he doesn't have talent. I think the "experts" know that a lot more goes into being a productive RB than just skill. To say Thomas Jones has no shot at being a top 10 RB is nonsense. If you want to say the odds are against him, then you'd probably be right but he still has a shot. Final words - you don't average 4.0 YPC on last year's Bears team without having the ability to be an NFL RB.

As a Bears fan, some of us feel that Thomas Jones is a stop gap RB---good enough for now, but if we can upgrade him (Brown, Benson, Cadillac, Edge) then its very possible. I believe Lovie and Turner are looking for a RB that can carry the ball 20-25 times a game and gain those tough yards. Jones fit more of what they tried to do last year with the Air-Shea offense. Remember too, that Jones had 100 yards twice vs Green Bay's defense---not exactly a tall order. I know some people will cry salary cap at me, but I think the Bears would be wise to grab Edge and try and sign him to a deal with a cap friendly hit in 2005. Cutting RW and Tucker after June 1st could free up 3-4 million dollars. We have about 3-4 to spend after rookies, so 6-8 million should be able to sign James, a QB, and a veteran LB for this year. Acquiring Edge for a 2nd or 3rd rounder would allow us the ability to draft Edwards or Williams. Edge, Muhammad, Edwards/Williams, Tait at LT, Miller at RT----the Bears would be a strong favorite to make the playoffs in the NFC.

If Cadillac Williams turns into the next Curtis Martin, how silly it would be to pass on him because they have Thomas Jones.

If the Bears draft a runner at #4 they are idiots. This isn't a fantasy team that we're trying to build in Chicago and RB isn't as important as we make it to be. They are not in position to challenge for a title but they do appear to be building a nice core. Trade down, use the picks to strengthen that core AND hope that Grossman develops...otherwise you'll be in the same position next year lookin' QB with an early first rounder.

i smell a sig-bet

Otis,

if Thomas Jones finishes in the top 10, I will post the following

Thomas Jones is well on his way to be the next Walter Payton

if he finished in the top 5, I will post

Thomas Jones is the next Walter Payton

IF he does not finish in the top 10 you will post the following as your sig for 1 year

Thomas Jones is the next Adrian Murrell
You're on if you give me the following contingencies:-If he gets traded to another team, the bet is off.

-If he misses more than 4 games this season.

I don't want him breaking his leg or being traded to Arizona and then you #####ing that I need to put in your sig. The bet is based on him being in relatively good health and in the situation that he is in today. I can't predict the future, but I can stand by all the posts I've made in this thread.

And I like your suggested sigs, but one addition in the sig if I win - below the line about Thomas Jones you must put a clickable link to this post which reads "I HEART THOMAS JONES"

At season's end, you will be :bag: and I will be :rotflmao:
Otis..get ready for that Adrian Murrell quote on the bottom of your sig....Thomas Jones will forever be only as good as Thomas Jones, which is not very good

Looks like Otis left himself a lot of wiggle room. This comment:
The bet is based on him being in relatively good health and in the situation that he is in today.
seems to leave him an out if he wants to wiggle out of what should be an honorable bet. No mention of getting beat out by another RB (draft or otherwise) so I would think the bet is valid.

the point was from day 1 that Thomas Jones will not be a top 5 back.this sig bet was made because I was confident that either he would fail, he would get hurt or he would get beat out.let me ask you a question: if he got beat out by Marcell Shipp would the sig bet would count?

I still say I can't predict the future, and I had no way of knowing the Bears would select a RB at #4. Obviously I don't believe Jones can be a top 10 back as an NFL backup.I tried to put in contingencies to make my point clear -- I didn't want him getting hurt, or, as I mentioned, moving to an awful situation, and then you trying to rub that in my face as a "victory." Sitting here today I still have no doubt that Thomas Jones as a starter on that Bears team could be a top fantasy back. Unfortunately, an unexpected twist has made that impossible.
