Being a homer vs. being a fan. (1 Viewer)

As many of you know, I am HUGE Cowboys fan. Today, I was asked by another Cowboy fan if I was an "Out of Town" fan (Which I am-I DO NOT live in Texas).

My question to the board is do you have to be a :homer: to be considered a knowledgable fan about that team. Also, for those who have chatted Cowboys with me, does it matter that I don't live in Texas?

Giant fan here...Outside of choosing the wrong out of area team to root for, the answer is that dumb Cowboy fans can be everywhere, not just from Texas :pics: Seriously, being knowledgeable has nothing to do with proximity and everything to do with how you watch the game and what you absorb watching the game. For example, say what you want about bad decisions by Romo or Bledsoe, the game was lost in the trenches as the Giant defensive line dominated the Cowboys OL.BTW, I line in NJ, and also like the Dolphins; I know many Dolphin fans from Miami who don't no much about the Dolphins.Bottom line is that there are fans who get it and fans that don't and proximity to the home team has nothing to do with it

Yeah, there's like a 50 mile radius around Miami, and everyone within that radius doesn't know squat about the Dolphins. It's weird, the further you get from Miami, the more knowledgeable the Dolphin fans get. I think people in Miami just find it hard to care so much about football when they have south beach just sitting right there. Sort of like football fans in San Diego.Anyway, I'm a Denver fan who lives in Florida, and I don't think anyone would have any problems calling me a "homer". Originally, homer meant blind fan who just fawned over his team no matter what, and always drafted his team's kicker early. Around here, Homer just tends to mean educated fan.P.S. Yes, I always draft Jason Elam, too, but not just because he's Denver's kicker- he's also the only guy who is a mortal lock to finish in the top 10 every year, and he's usually the 5th guy off the board. That's value. Besides, kickers are the best homer picks to make, because then you're rooting for the entire offense to score as much as possible.

:goodposting: The term is or can be ambiguous. I tend to shy away from it because it can be used to imply a lack of objectivity which is not a good thing in discussions around here. Most team-sponsored message boards are filled with people like this. Our "homers" on this board tend to be people who are better informed about a given team (typically the one that they also root for) and are looked to for timely and reliable information and opinions about the team's developments.

Homer = myopic fan who does not see logically how good there team is nor ever criticizes it for any reason and thinks it is going to the super bowl every yearFan = fan of team who roots for them but can analyze their strengths and weaknesses and understands how good they are

I guess I always thought a homer (From our board)meant they are a fan from that City. So, I guess what I am asking is are board members more likely/ less likely / or indifferent to getting information from someone who does not live there?

Fifteen years ago, I'd say yes. With the growth of the internet however, the only thing that local fans have over others is access to local talk radio . . . which IMHO tends to be about useless in getting good team info.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure I'm considered one of the biggest Broncos homers on the board even though I live in Florida. A lot of that has to do with me being very loud and opinionated, but I've never heard of anyone discounting anything I say just because I live out-of-state.

For the purposes of this board, a homer is definitely different than a fan. Here, we are looking for breaking news. The local media sometimes has information before the national news and sometimes sheds a more in debth and honest light on stories, thus the value.Be a fan, but don't confuse it with a homer for the purpose of information gathering.
