Ben Tate vs Arian Foster (1 Viewer)

if Ben Tate doesn't get injured this preseason, does he win the Texans starting job? Foster is easily the best RB is fantasy this year, but will it last? I own him in a keeper league and normally I wouldn't even hesitate, but I wonder about Tate. I seem to recall Tate was viewed as the Texan RB to have right? Obviously Foster has proven his worth, but is this year his ceiling with Tate cutting into touches next year and beyond?

Foster had the job locked up before Tate's injury. For some reason, it's commonly believed that Foster only won the job by default. Foster is a top-5 option in keeper leagues. Don't worry about Tate.

See, I didn't really follow the situation as the injury was pretty early. I know in one of my 16 team leagues that drafts early, Tate went first out of the 3 Texans RB.

That's just bad drafting. Nobody said tea-leaf reading was easy.

Just remember who Kubiak learned his Running Back Theory from.
This is a great point! Yes, Foster has looked amazing this year, but many are forgetting about his injury history/fumbling issues. I would not be shocked to see this become a fill blown RBBC next season-Tate will definitely be their short yardage/goalline carries. Foster will be ranked in the top 5 in all 2011 pre-season rankings only to disappoint and not live up to expectations. Grabbing Tate in a dynasty league format is a good idea--too many people are being myopic about guys like Tate and Hardesty

While the bolded is "technically" true, it is also somewhat mis-leading.Foster was the "starter" before Tate's injury, but it would be inaccurate to say he had the job "locked up."

Tate held out until the end of July, and missed all of the OTA's because of a hamstring issue.

Foster meanwhile, looked good during the off-season.

As a result, Foster was the starter. If Tate hadn't gotten injured and done well in the pre-season, things might have been different. I doubt Tate would have taken the starter role from Foster, but I believe we would have seen more of a RBBC in Houston.

With Foster's strong season, he is clearly the #1 RB in Houston. However, if Ben Tate is healthy next year, it wouldn't be surprising to see him take over the role Derrick Ward has played this year, which is the clear back-up.

Oh, you mean his injury history of NO MISSED GAMES during his NFL career? Or his fumbling issues of 3 fumbles in 300 career carries?I expect Tate to get some carries next year, but they will be strictly back-up/rest/mop-up carries, IMO.

BTW-What exactly is your "Tate will definitely be their short yardage/goalline" statement based on? I'm curious, because Foster is the 2nd best RB this year at converting goal-line carries into TDs, with 64% success (Hillis is #1, with 67% success). I'm not sure why Houston would replace Foster at the goal-line, but since you think Tate will DEFINITELY have that role next year, I'd like to hear why.

ETA-This is referring to RBs only, and only those who have at least 5 goal line carries.

I'm not sure, my sarcasm detector is off, but was the post you responded to sarcasm maybe? Seems to be nothing more than a distillation of all the anti-foster arguments we've been seeing all year. Possible I guess, in any event good posting by you and I completely agree with all your points. Watch foster play and it's clear he's a stud. Sure tate could play wards role but the trust the texans show in foster, both in how he's used and how often (though I don't understand why they sometimes go away from him in the second half) to my mind shows how the texans feel about him.

To me, Foster looks like a bonafide stud...it is hard to say what will happen next year, though, with the new coaching staff.

A lot of uncertainty heading into next season for the Texans. But, the one certain thing is, barring injury, Arian Foster will be the starting RB and Ben Tate will be his back-up.

I sometimes wonder if some posters actually watch the games. If you do, you'd know that Arian Foster is the real deal.

I own Foster so I want the general sentiment in here to be true.

However, how can we be so confident when there's a decent chance there will be a new regime in Houston? How can we be sure that the new coach won't come from the RBBC school of thought? After all, Ward has also looked pretty effective and Tate was drafted pretty high.

He's obviously talented, but is he top 5 for RBs based purely on talent or is it partially situation? How much of his success is due to his fit in the zone blocking scheme, i.e. the good old "one cut and go?" Will he always get used in the passing game like he has been this year? A lot of people predicted that Chris Johnson would come back to earth this year, but did anyone really expect that he would be so much less involved in the passing game? And that was on a team where there was a lot of stability from last year to this year.

My theory on Foster in my dynasty leagues right now is to ride it as long as it lasts and keep my fingers crossed because no one is offering me close to top 5 value for him...and the trade offers come with some version of the rationale I posted above. In fact, usually to pry a top 5 running back from anyone, I'd have to overpay, so I'd say his market value is way less than I would expect for a clear cut "top 5 option" right now. Your mileage may vary.
