Ben Watson (1 Viewer)

Sep 6 Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots QB Tom Brady believes he and TE Benjamin Watson will likely be able to build solid chemistry in the absence of WR Deion Branch (holdout). "Ben probably gets more opportunity than anyone else," Brady said. "He's really a focal point of the passing game, because of the way he's stepped up his level of play the last season. Ben and I have definitely grown a lot this past year. He's taking great strides. I'm excited to see the kind of year he could have. He could be a real dominant player."

He doesn't have to surpass Gates' numbers from last season for me to be very happy with him. I would take a solid #2TE type year.

I am feeling pretty confident that he will be comfortably in the Top 5 for TEs.

:excited:

How could you not after that statement ??He basically says Watson is his go-to-guy this year.

Picked him up off the wire this morning, so this is great. I have him as my WR#4 in a non-TE mandatory league. I think he's going to be money. Liked that approx 8 catch, 97 yard performance in week 3 of preseason. Sign of things to come?

I agree that Watson should have a very good year, but let's not forget that Brady is a master at finding the open man. If Watson is successfully double teamed at times (which could happen with few other decent targets), many of the receptions will be spread around.

Brady is arguably the best passer of all those guys you listed above

Ahh, but none of those guys have Brady's reputation as a passer. If Manning came out and said Dallas Clark was going to be his go to guy or whatever you want to glean from the quoted paragraph above, you'd be pretty high on Clark.

Brees threw to Gates. Does that mean he is a stud QB?

Gates doesn't have Brees this year

I can't explain exactly why, but I get the same feeling about Watson as I did about Ben Coates and Sterling Sharpe when I drafted them in their breakout years.

We talk about third year WR's. What about third year TE's.

It's a given to me that he's a top 5 TE with the potential to be top 3.

So while the spirit of the thread may be hyperbole, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

I'd agree with top 5. I still like Heap and Shockey better. Maybe top 4.

I don't know why, but I've soured on Shockey. I think the top 3 te's at the end of the year will be some order of Gates, Heap, and Watson.

Heap has to share balls with Mason and ClaytonWatson is essentially the top dog in NE
Not exactly. I'd say that Clayton has to share balls with Mason and Heap. I like Clayton, but I don't expect much higher numbers than what he put up last year. May be even less, not due to anything he does.Plus, McNair likes to throw to the #1 WR and his TE. There wasn't much going to the #2 WR in Ten.

i am starting watson over heap this week...i like brady vs. bills more than mcnair vs. bucs......who is with me?

i'm going back and forth between startin watson or mcmichael this week. right now it's mcmichael, but i'm not sure if it's because i think he'll do better or just because i'm stupid and want to see one of my players play the first day of football lol

I am really excited that Mason and Clayton joined the Ravens team THIS offseason. Hopefully Heap will have as good a year as last year when he didn't have WR's playing next to him that were any good.

And Bill Simmons (who's not at all biased) says that the Pats 2-TE set will be unstoppable this season - so it MUST be true.

This is just a ploy to motivate Deion Branch.
This is quickly becoming the most used and annoying remark i've seen. I get more enjoyment from the "Championship!!!" comments. Sarcasm or not the whole "ploy to motivate ..."enter name here"...is just absolutely annoying. And this is not a ploy to motivate anyone.....this is a plea to end this idiotic quote.Who's with me? Please lets end the madness and get back to real NFl business.

Hm....

-Watson by far best reciever practicing with Brady all off-season

-Coaches have said he might go out wide

-Chasing down Champ Bailey

-Deion Branch won't play this year

-Watson arguably #1 on Pats now

-Deion Branch 998 and 7 last year

-Watson could take all of those numbers

With Gates around, thats not #1 numbers. However, WHEN he puts up numbers similar to that (barring injury) he will be top 3. That puts him as by far the best value in the draft. With Gates going in the top 3 rounds and having ability to get Watson in rnd 9 or 10, I suggest you go for Watson.

Book it

your comments are a ploy to motivate me to write this. :banned: :banned:

What is he supposed to say, "nope, Ben hasn't improved all year and I don't think he'll be anything special,"? Brady is just doing the right thing and hyping his guy. This shouldn't have any bearing on Watson's projections.

That said, I think he'll finish 6th behind Gates, Heap, Shockey, Gonzo, and Witten and presents the best overall value pick as a tight end in the 8th round or later.

Watson = top 10 TE production, but if you're expecting him to help boost your team to winning your league.....well, sadly you will be head in hands come January.

A lot of people are also forgetting the have Daniel Graham who is a viable option for Brady once teams start to cover Watson after wek 3, AND....they will be running the ball much more now w/o a clear #1 threat at WR.

For those of you who debate starting him in place of Heap....a few words of advice.

remember what McNair was able to do with Wychek??? imagine now with Heap who is leaps and bounds more physical and athletic then Frank ever was....

Heap will be the #2 or 3 TE this year.

Wow... awful lot of assumptions there.

I agree with you completely. This Watson hype has gotten way, way out of hand.

So a top 10 TE can't help your team win games?

I drafted Watson last year and this year too. That said, I thought he was super sleeper in 2005. Last year Brady said that he never had a TE like Watson and that he would be utilized in the passing game like a WR. Man, was I disappointed when undrafted TEs were putting up better #s than Watson. Things are different personnel wise this year in NE and, coupled with Watson's NFL seasoning in '05, is why I drafted him again. The remarks Brady made this year are strikingly similar to last year. When I see the production I'll believe it. ;)

I assume he meant that Watson would take your team to the next level, much like a Gates would (as opposed to a Shockey/Witten type).
There is only one TE that can do that at this point. There's Gates and then there's everyone else.

They will help win games, hell a kicker can help you win a game.I'm just not buying into the Watson will be the key to ANY team winning a championship.

Its a team, all of your players should help produce points to help win a game.

Watson may have his 1 or 2 weeks with 2TD's at best, and I'm sure everyone will be on here with the " I told you" comments. But for his weeks with 2 catches for 16 yards, you will all cower and be quiet while i will take a TE who will week after week be consistent.

You can have Watson....I'll take McMichael, 3 year w/o missing a start and now C-Pep. He will blow by Watson on the TE ranking by years end.
