If you want to handcuff LJ this season it is going to cost a much earlier draft pick now.
It's not going to cost a 5th rounder like the Priest/LJ
debacle last year. I don't think it'll even cost a 7th rounder.
Everyone is looking back on that, saying how great it was--yet LJ was the only pick of that which worked out.
It's funny how people are still confused about the LJ "handcuff" last year.LJ wasn't a handcuff.
He had a huge 2004, and KC publicly stated they will get LJ far more involved this year - regardless of how Holmes was playing. We saw this early on. He had 250 yards 3 tds getting limited touches. And regardless of Holmes getting hurt, he was going to keep getting more and more work. To keep Holmes fresh, and to give the offense a spark.
Second, Holmes has far more injury concerns then most RBs.
Third, the KC offense is insane. The upside was huge.
No one is talking about Turner, Betts, Morris getting far more touches this year. No one is going to talk about Bennett getting tons of touches. LJ was an up and coming force, and even Holmes couldn't keep him off the field. That's vastly different then 99% of the handcuffs in FF.
It's still funny even a year later, people still don't understand the dynamics of the LJ pick. Again - LJ wasn't a handcuff. He was a rising star at RB who KC couldn't keep on the bench any longer - regardless of Holmes health. His first game as a backup he ran for 110 and 2 tds! Turner/Betts/Morris aren't going to demand those kinds of touches or those results.
Anyone who was paying attention last year clearly saw that Dicky wasn't going to be able to keep LJ off the field like he did in years past. Even when LJ was busting 80 yard TD runs in the preseason, people still stuck their head in the sand. It was a very special set of circumstances, and anyone fishing for LJ type backups this year are going to be sorely out of luck. Because I don't see any backup, on a top 5 offense, who the HC won't be able to keep off the field despite a solid RB in front of them.
But to call the LJ pick a “lucky handcuff” laughable.
