Chiefs | Team acquires M. Bennett

Published Wed Aug 2 12:01:00 a.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Kansas City Chiefs have acquired RB Michael Bennett from the New Orleans Saints for what is believed to be a future draft choice. Paperwork must still be filed with the NFL office and the deal is contingent on Bennett passing a Chiefs' physical exam. Passing the exam is not expected to be an issue because Bennett is already practicing with the Saints.

Hmmm... unexpected at least to me. I thought the Rams were a lock. Poses the question of whether LJ will miss out on some 3rd down opps.

Just about to post the same thing.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Not exactly the trade Bennett owners were looking for.

You kidding?I say besides Denver, this could be one of the best teams for Bennett to go to. Someone else is going to be carrying the rock in KC, and Bennett is now an early favorite for that role. Imagine if LJ went down with an injury.

Why not? He wasn't going to get a starting gig anywhere. I don't see how he'll have trouble winning the backup spot from the likes of Dee Brown and Quentin Griffin, and if LJ were to get hurt he'd be in a nice situation.

With tales of Bell/Dayne being lackluster and Cobbs stinking it up to the point that Denver is inquiring about trading for RBs, I thought Denver was the people's choice.

Yes, instead of two RBs having to get hurt for Bennett to have value, now only one RB has to get hurt. Woo hoo!

Exactly. Bennett could be the next Derrick Blaylock in KC.

That sounds like the tune Maurice Morris owners have been carrying for the last couple of years. "Imagine if Alexander went down...." How's that working out?

:goodposting: I am actually thinking about picking up Bennett off the WW now.

You are comparing LJ's backup roles in the last 2 years to Alexander's 5 years of injury free football? :lmao:

I am saying that in every extremely productive RB situation there sits an owner holding on to the much-less talented backup and a voodoo doll. Its been my experience that this is not a successful strategy. Will LJ play 16 games this year? Who knows? But most leagues simply don't offer enough roster spots to play a successful, "I'll draft all the backup RBs gambit". If you draft Bennett and six weeks into the season LJ is going nuts, while Bennett is going off to the tune of 3 carries for 9 yards every week, will he be on your roster mid-season?What cause do you have to believe that LJ has an above average chance to get injured? Bennett is a handcuff, like so many other RBs. He has some value to the LJ owner in your league and little none to the other owners.

except that KC has had a history of RB2 putting up excellent nembers, for whatever reasonPriest started last year, posting nice numbers before the injury

if memory serves me correctly, LJ also posted excellent numbers--albeit inconsistent numbers--during the same period

KC runs enough, and is effecient enough in the run game, for MBennett to be added to the "trade for" list for any fantasy owner

If you want to handcuff LJ this season it is going to cost a much earlier draft pick now.
It's not going to cost a 5th rounder like the Priest/LJ debacle last year. I don't think it'll even cost a 7th rounder.
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Everyone is looking back on that, saying how great it was--yet LJ was the only pick of that which worked out.
It's funny how people are still confused about the LJ "handcuff" last year.LJ wasn't a handcuff.

He had a huge 2004, and KC publicly stated they will get LJ far more involved this year - regardless of how Holmes was playing. We saw this early on. He had 250 yards 3 tds getting limited touches. And regardless of Holmes getting hurt, he was going to keep getting more and more work. To keep Holmes fresh, and to give the offense a spark.

Second, Holmes has far more injury concerns then most RBs.

Third, the KC offense is insane. The upside was huge.

No one is talking about Turner, Betts, Morris getting far more touches this year. No one is going to talk about Bennett getting tons of touches. LJ was an up and coming force, and even Holmes couldn't keep him off the field. That's vastly different then 99% of the handcuffs in FF.

It's still funny even a year later, people still don't understand the dynamics of the LJ pick. Again - LJ wasn't a handcuff. He was a rising star at RB who KC couldn't keep on the bench any longer - regardless of Holmes health. His first game as a backup he ran for 110 and 2 tds! Turner/Betts/Morris aren't going to demand those kinds of touches or those results.

Anyone who was paying attention last year clearly saw that Dicky wasn't going to be able to keep LJ off the field like he did in years past. Even when LJ was busting 80 yard TD runs in the preseason, people still stuck their head in the sand. It was a very special set of circumstances, and anyone fishing for LJ type backups this year are going to be sorely out of luck. Because I don't see any backup, on a top 5 offense, who the HC won't be able to keep off the field despite a solid RB in front of them.

But to call the LJ pick a “lucky handcuff” laughable.

I wasn't disagreeing with this.I think the Priest pick was the awful one. That's the point I was trying to make.

But hey, burn that straw man all you want.

Blaylock looked pretty good in spot duty for Priest.I turned down a number of what at the time I thought were one-sided trades for Bennett in the last few weeks. There was no way to predict him going to KC, but I sure am wishing I would of accepted 1 of them now.

Why? Bennett is not known as a good receiver. The only passes he catches are screens, which either winds up going 80 yards or -2. I don't think LJ is in danger.

I dont get this thinking when there is a new head coach, new offensive coordinator, new starting fullback, and 2 new starters on the o-line which lost arguably its two best players

His situation is better than it would have been in STL since he'd be a backup in either place.

PFT is reporting that KC gave a 4th rounder for Bennett.

If that is correct, and St. Louis allegedly offered a 4th, I don't understand the trade. I would suspect that St. Louis' 4th rounder will be a better pick then KC's.

Granted NO may not want to trade within the conference (but it's not like they are super bowl favorites; and it's not like they are trading McAllister or Horn).

I'm not sure where I read it, but this is the exact reason that he was traded to KC instead of St. Louis.

I would sacrifice a few picks in the 4th round to get him out of the conference.

So do talks between the Rams and Titans intensify? It seems clear to me that the Rams wanted another backup RB and with Bennett on the board and the previous interest they had shown in Chris Brown...

Also, what does this say about Deuce McAllister?

Guess they found a doctor to help him pass the physical. Was there just no one available? Why not go pluck Travis Minor from the Dolphins? How bout Suggs from the Browns?
