Let’s break down the 12 teams. Remember this is Best Ball, 6 pts all TD, PPR, TE=2PPR. The league is made up of 12 people that either are FBG posters, and/or staff. I will go slot by slot and then address yours truly last.
We start QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/Flex/Flex/PK/DefST…TE can fill the flex spots.
Capt Hook
QB: I like what Hook did here….he hit a perfect golf swing on the 8th/9th turn with Eli Manning (8.12), and David Garrard (9.01). Both will make a nice pair and while it isn’t Tom Brady, I think Hook will be very competitive here. He also took Sage Rosenfels(21.01) and that’s a nice late round flyer, Sage last season was terrific when he took the field.
RB: LT(1.01) and Michael Turner (4.12) are the base of this group. When you have LT, it gives the luxury of waiting to get your RB2, and I think Turner was a decent enough pick to justify the pick on the 4/5 turn…again making a nice golf swing sort of speak. The rest is sort of hit or miss for me but with LT, you can’t really fault Hook for what he tried to do. Fargas(10.01), Deuce(11.01), Hightower(12.12), Sproles(16.12), and Chris Taylor(17.01) seems like a lot of filler and not much meat to me…but injuries pop up and someone in there may prove to be a starter.
WR: Colston (2.12), Cotchery(5.01), Burleson(6.12), and Harrison(7.01)-He should have grabbed Anthony Gonzalez to pair with Harrison….I would have liked that a lot better. Colston and Cotchery will be great performers, I think Burleson will disappoint, and I said what I felt about Marvin. Henry(13.01) and Randle El(14.12) round it out. Not a terrible group at all but could have been stronger. I think Hook let a couple of teams thru the backdoor for playoff spots.
TE: Gonzalez(3.01) and Clark(15.01) make a nice combo for the TE position, Hook doesn’t look like he was trying to fill flex spots with TEs as others did which I will highlight later.
PK: Crosby and Lindell
Def/ST: Washington(19.01) and Cleveland(20.12), not a big fan of that combo….and there weren’t many teams leftover at the end of the draft.
Overall: Hook did a solid job but this is not a world beater just yet either. Jhe stands a good chance to be in the playoffs and/or make a playoff run.
Bicycle Seat Sniffer- passed out from sniffin glue halfway thru…
QB: Bress(2.11) was a great pick but he passed on Romo. Kitna(10.11) is a decent choice as a backup, Leinart(16.11) was a waste of space unless you had Warner, but he didn’t pick Leinart either.
RB: Adrian Peterson(1.02), and Laurence Maroney(5.02) are the two anchors at RB. I like them but not getting Chester Taylor IMO was a mistake. Julius Jones(8.11)…maybe he fell asleep before we even figured it out. Did pick Ahmad Bradshaw(13.02) up.
WR: TJ Housh(3.02), Chris Chambers(6.11), and Bernard Berrian(7.02) are the top WR here…not the strongest bunch in this league for sure. Also grabbed Stallworth(11.02).
TE: Clark(4.11) and H.Miller(9.02) make a solid combo at TE. They combined for about 16 TD last year.
PK: Got Nick Folk (14.11) by default.
Def/ST: San Diego and Jax…should be fine there.
Overall: Kinda meh, but he did fall off the grid at some point and was being given best ADP player on the board the last 8 rounds I would say. Darkhorse for the playoffs IMHO.
Pimpin Aint Easy -This presentation brought to you by HBO and the Dallas Cowboys
QB: Romo(3.02 was an absolute steal at that point. Russell(13.03), was not a fan of this pick.
“And Troy Aikman throws to Irvin for the score”…
RB: Some will question what he did at the #3 but I knew he was going to go that route. I actually like the pick and think it is pretty safe. Will MB III finish top3?...probably not but he should be top 10 in that offense. Ronnie Brown(6.10) and not getting Ricky Williams after he passed on him the next 3-4 rounds left me scratching my head. Mendenhall(8.10) was a steal. Felix Jones(10.10) was a nice insurance policy.
“And Emmitt Smith breaks thru into the secondary and they’re not gonna catch him”…
WR: Braylon Edwards(2.10), Roy Williams(4.10), Donald Driver(7.03), Javon Walker(9.03)-PUKE, Isaac Bruce(11.03), Chad Jackson(19.03)…this is a nice group, just hate the Walker pick when there were other WR on the board that would be better with this group. Still a fairly solid group.
TE: Todd Heap(5.03), I just don’t trust him or the Ravens passing game and made sure not to land any of them. Pope and Scaife late do nothing for me. This is actually pretty weak compared to other combos at TE…Heap might not be any better than guys like LJ Smith who were taken much later.
PK: Gostkowski(16.10)
Def/ST: Dallas Cowboys(12.10) of course, and Pittsburgh(14.10) make an awesome duo in this department.
Overall: Has to be in the mix for a playoff spot but I think the TE are lacking, and the depth at positions like QB is not there, so injuries would really turn this into a house of cards if not careful.
Just to break in here, these are the top3 picks and so far I don’t see a monster that is going to be impossible to beat.
Abrecher
QB: McNabb(6.09), TJax(13.04), Chad Pennington(14.09)…it’s not bad, but I think it is maybe middle of the road. McNabb will dictate the pace, but he should have at least 6-7 really nice weeks. Penny will surprise a few and TJax could have a game or two along the way as well. It’s best ball so you need a little perspective when you rate these teams.
RB: Westbrook(1.04), Brandon Jacobs(4.09), Earnest Graham(5.04)-Ugh, Steve Slaton(10.09), MoMo(11.04). Westy and Jacobs are gonna put a hurtin on some people. I don’t understand grabbing Graham when you were doing fine with the other 2…I would have waited and grabbed a RB in the 7th-10th with a little more value. This is apretty solid group at the top, and Slaton will have a few nice games this year too.
WR: Hmmm, Chad Johnson(3.03), Santana Moss(7.04), and Kevin Curtis(8.09)…let’s start here. You really waited a long time to grab your WR2 which you must fill in every week, not liking Santana as a WR2 in a 12 team league right now. Curtis has a sports hernia and will be out some time. I ahd a friend who played LB in HS, and when he got a hernia right before his Senior year, he was out a long time and wasn’t 100% even when he took the field. I have Curtis moved way down on my board…way down, almost undraftable early in the year. So all that said, there was flurry of players taken late…Gage(12.09), Reg Williams(15.04)-possible value but again an injured WR, Hagan(16.09), Lloyd(18.09)-not a fan, Andre Davis(19.04)-guy had some nice games last year, I like the upside this late, Devrey Henderson(21.04). I am not a huge fan of this group overall.
TE: KW II(2.09)-Steep price IMO, and Ben Watson(9.04) make a solid duo at TE.
PK: Akers and Kasay…oldies but goodies station
Def/ST: Seattle…I think you gotta have 2 defenses week in and week out, some teams implement 3.
Overall: I think Abrecher did alright for his 1st draft in this league. I also think he will have to work the WW or work some trades to be a real threat to make the playoffs.
Twilight
QB: Roethlisberger(7.05), Edwards(13.05), Kyle Orton(16.08)…in term of where they were taken you got good value across the board. As to how they will do as a unit…I’m not high on Big Ben and I could have passed on him for another round or two even…just not gonna sniff 30 TD again this year, sorry. Edwards and Orton don’t have a lot of game experience.
RB: Addai(1.05), Thomas Jones(5.05), Chris Perry(10.08), Pierre Thomas (15.05). I like Addai and Jones, Perry has never stayed healthy, and Thomas will have to wait his turn. Would have liked to see more depth…actually no I don’t because I want to win, but I think there needed to be 1 more on the depth chart…maybe abother RB in that 7th-11th round range.
WR: Steve Smith(3.05), Santonio Holmes(4.08), Lee Evans(6.08), Anthony Gonzalez(8.08), VJax(11.05), DeSean Jackson(14.08), Laurent Robinson(17.05), Antonio Bryant(20.08). I listed all of them as I think this a very nice solid group with some big play potential. In fact I love the way Twighlight never abandoned this position. He grabbed 2-3 in the 1st 6 rounds, 4 in the 1st 8, but he comes back again in the 11th, 14th, 17th, 20th…I just like the rhythm of how these guys were taken. Twighlight did an excellent job of finding value and I like this group a lot, likely the strength of the team and could help carry him well into the palyoffs.
TE: Gates(2.08), Duston Keller(9.05)-Bit of a reach, Jacob Tamme(22.08)…Gates and anything is a winner usually. I think you could have done better at the TE2/TE3 slots.
PK: Longwell and Prater…waited till the 19th round, very nice.
Def/ST: NE Pats(12.08), and the AZ Cardinals(18.08)…both of them feast on terrible teams, I really like this combo and feel it will be a strength and near the top of the league.
Overall: I think Twilight has a strong team and should compete for a playoff spot if not his division, nice draft.
FF Weasel -Jeff Tefertiller from FBG staff stand in for Weasel.
QB: Shcaub(9.06), Young(10.07), and Jason Campbell(11.06)…You will see that I also like waiting on QBs in best ball, then grabbing 2-3, especially 3 in back to back to back rounds. I like Shcaub, not a huge fan of Campbell and Young but I like the way they were pulled off the board.
RB: Frank Gore(1.06), Reggie Bush(2.07), Matt Forte(7.06)-Puke, Kenny Watson(13.06), Andre hall(15.06), Fred Jax(22.07)…not loving this all the way around. Gore will have some really big games, Bush is always nice in PPR leagues as I had him last season. Forte, Watson, Hall, and FJax are not all that inspiring.
WR: T.Holt(3.06), Roddy White(5.06), Greg Jennings(6.07), Teddy Ginn Jr(8.07)…this is a pretty tight starting foursome. Ginn was the last of a tier IMO, I passed on him in the 8th round but was wishing I had grabbed him. Muhammed, Branch nad Eddie Royal offer some depth with a little upside mixed in as well.
TE: Owen Daniels(4.07)-WOW, and Kevin Boss(12.07). I love Daniels but I couldn’t pull the trigger in the 4th round. I was shocked how early some of the TE went…in DD software, there wasn’t the big dropoff that some feel,e specially in best ball.
PK: Vinatieri and Dawson…AV in the 17th was a nice safe pick.
Def/ST: Oakland(19.06) and Houston(21.06)…not exactly perennial top notch defenses here.
Overall: Not one of the stronger teams IMO. Can make the playoffs with a nice WR core, good frontline RBs, and some other pieces. I do think it is somewhat a middle of the road team though.
Radballs -Ollie Ollie Ollie
QB: Carson Palmer(5.08) and Phillip Rivers(10.05), nothing wrong with this combo whatsoever.
RB: Waited until the 3rd round to take a RB and then went Ryan grant(3.08)-good value and got Brandon Jackson(22.05) somehow in the last round, that’s not a typo. DMC(4.05)-such a Raidersfan, Fred Taylor(8.05), Chester Taylor(9.08)-love the 8th and 9th round selections, Jerious Norwood(12.05)-I was eyeballing him, and would have taken him in the 12th. I like this group, very solid and he didn’t overspend anywhere. Great job Rad.
WR: Randy Moss(1.08), Reggie Wayne(2.05)-another one where Rad picked my pocket, Reggie Brown(7.08), Curry(11.08), Hester(13.08), James Jones(16.05)…pretty solid group, very strong in the WR1 and WR2 slots…actually he has 2 #1s at WR so he is going to have some monster weeks.
TE: Tony Scheffler(6.05), Jeff King(14.05), Alex Smith(15.08)…not the trio I would have wanted but it’s his team not mine. Scheffler has potential but I would have paired him with Ben Watson/Crumpler/LJ Smith…something like that.
PK: Kaeding and Scobee are a very strong.
Def/ST: Baltimore(17.08), Tennessee(20.05), and NY Jets(21.08)…like having 3 teams on a 22 man roster. Numbers will work in your favor.
Overall: Looks like a playoff team to me. Not a world beater but very solid across the board, little lacking at TE, but Radballs should see the playoffs.
Jason Wood
QB:Jay Cutler(7.09), Brett Favre(9.09), and Matt Ryan(17.09)...good solid group. Favre and Cutler could possibly pair up for 50-55 TD easily.
RB: M.Lynch(2.04)-huge fan, Jamal lewis(4.04)-won't lose with that pick, Edge(5.09)-under valued, Ricky Williams(10.04)-nice to find a starter that late, Derrick Ward(19.09). A nice solid group overall, some of them will fill flex positions certain weeks, no many teams have that type of depth right now.
WR: Terrell Owens(1.09), Dwayne Bowe(6.04), Mason(8.04), Kev Walter(12.04), Bryant Jonson(15.09), DJ Hackett(16.04), Josh Morgan(20.04). Waited a bit long from TO to Bowe, but this is a decent solid group with some pop at different places. Not the group I would have put together.
TE: Chris Cooley(3.09), Utect(13.09), John Carlson(14.04)...if the draft was any idication, it looks like Wood was wanting TEs in the 12-15th rounds but grew frustrated with my 3 in a row selcetions in the 11th-13th rounds. I like his trio and it has some upsdie depending on what Utect and Carlson do. Cooley in the 3rd round...but I guess it was par for the course in this draft...surprised by some of the early early TE picks.
PK: Carpenter and Reed, very nice. 21st and 22nd round too.
Def/ST: Minnesota(11.09)-1st off the board and Philly(18.04)-bring it home for Jerome.
Overall: A nice solid team, not overly flashy, but likely going to compete for the playoffs.
Team Legacy
QB: Kurt Warner(9.10), Jake Delhomme(10.03), Brady Quinn(16.03)…Technically he has 2 QBs that are the back ups on their team…however you have to think Warner will see action, but I think he pulled the trigger a round or two early and should have had Warner as a QB2/3 possibly. Still this is not a terrible group with the upside factor.
RB: MJD(2.03), W.McGahee(4.03), DWill(6.03), L.White(7.10), Chris brown(20.03)…Drew is solid, McGahee is scary right now but that pick might prove to be great value as the season rolls on. DWill and White will toggle for the RB2/3 slots, not a bad group of RB but you spent 4 of your 1st 7 picks on them and I think there should have been more pop. I’ll talk more about this though when I get to what I did in the 5th and 6th rounds…because of the rookie draft a couple months back, TL and I had a pretty good idea what the other was going to do here, luckily I started picking ahead of him in the 5th and felt like I could press thru who I wanted. TL was the guy I feared most in the 5th and 6th round because I felt like we had similar battle plans there.
WR: Fitzgerald(1.10), Anquamn Boldin(3.10), Porter(11.10), Patten(13.10), Meachem(14.03)-See how he covered his butt and got both Patten and Meachem? Nice job and I highlight as an example of what you can do in the 2nd half of a draft. Whichever pans out, he has them and it cost a 13th/14th combo, big deal. DJax(15.10), Rashied Davis(17.10), AND Michael Clayton round out this group. Not a bad bunch but abandoning the position from the 3rd thru 11th round and putting all your eggs in 1 basket with the Arizona Cardinals…very risky IMHO.
TE: Vernon Davis(5.10), Alge Crumpler(8.03), Randy McMichael(12.03)…pretty interesting group. Has some potential but far from a sure thing.
PK: Mike Nugent…
Def/ST: NY Giants(18.03), and Carolina (19.10), nice solid 1-2 on defense.
Overall: I really felt last night that Legacy choked and didn’t have a good draft, but this morning I think that is short sighted. He has a lot of risk, some of it unnecessary but I think he has a good chance to make a run at the playoffs. This is far from TL’s best work but I don’t see where he blanked the bed like I thought initially last night.
Family Matters
QB: Peyton manning(4.02)-steal, Marc Bulger(9.11)…peyton and anything is usually solid.
RB: Larry Johnson(2.02)-fell into his lap last year too, and Clinton Portis(1.11), Rudi(10.02)-Puke, Ladell Betts(11.11)-good back up to have…decent group, not a ton of depth…Portis and LJ will hold down the fort.
WR: Waited a long time to get started at WR, but I want to tell everyone that Family usually makes the playoffs so I think this is simply his strategy to wait on WRs. Hines Ward(5.11), L.Coles(6.02), Patrick Crayton(7.11)-all these guys are or could be only the WR2 on their rosters, Bennett(12.02), Stokely(15.11), Hardy(16.02)…not a huge fan of any of these guys this year. I think the WRs when you stack them up against the rest of the league are probably one of the lower groups.
TE: Jeremy Shockey(3.11)-shocking…I love him, wanted him, but the 3rd round…even I was a little amazed and I’m a big fan of his this year. Mercedes Lewis(13.11).
PK: Gould and Graham will be solid…didn’t grab one till the 18th too.
Def/ST: Chicago(14.02), GB(17.11), and SF(21.11) should make a solid trio at Defense.
Overall: One of the dark horses IMO to make the playoffs…not horrible by any means but I feel like the WR set is pretty weak comparably to what some others have.
Duckboy -Reigning Champion of the FIX Redraft League…
QB: Tom Brady(1.12), Garcia(13.12), Croyle(18.01)…Brady and anything is going to be solid. This is the way you draft them when you take a QB so early.
RB: He waited a long time…Selvin Young(5.12), FWP(6.01)-Puke, Ray Rice (8.01), A.Green(11.12), Leon Washington(15.12)…not a bad group considering you waited so long, but certainly not the top of the food chain. As I look at the RBs for everyone, I don’t see too much that would be a world beater in the RB dept. Even teams that got their hands on 2 good ones early, waited to add anyone till much later in the draft.
WR: Wes Welker(3.12), Brandon Marshall(4.01), S.Rice(9.12)-Puke, Bobby Engram(10.01), Mark Clayton(14.01), Steve Smith-NYG(16.01), Battle(22.01). I like Welker and Marshall on the turn, but not much of a fan of the rest of this. For waiting so long at RB, I expected to see something here at WR…let’s see what the TEs look like.
TE: Jason Witten(2.01), Zach Miller(7.12), Greg Olsen(12.01)…has the big gun in Witten and a otn of upside with Miller and Olsen…this could be a deadly bunch at TE.
PK: Brown and Rackers are very nice, should have no problems here.
Def/ST: Buffalo(17.12) and New Orleans(21.12)…interesting duo.
Overall: Not loving the team outside of the TE all that much. Sure Brady looks good… but I don’t see a lot of pop at places on the roster where you need it. Decided to pen with a TE/QB strategy, can’t fault you for it but you sacrificed 2 big positons that account for potentially 6 slots vs only 2 slots that need to be filled with QB and TE in a best ball league…not the biggest fan of that approach but you own the hardware this year so what the heck do I know?
And finally…
Ministry of Pain
QB: I waited a long time to grab a QB, and then I took a page out of the Wannabee playbook and went back to back to back at QB, and I really liked the group collectively. Derek Anderson(8.06)-had been going 5th round most of the Spring/Summer, Matt Hasselbeck(9.07), Aaron Rodgers(10.06)…I felt this trio really made a nice core and should have some potential for big games. Hass has no running game now so the Seadogs might have to throw even with suspect WR, and Rodgers has too many weapons and nothing behind him so he will post numbers, he has to. Now I could have grabbed Brady Quinn before Legacy scooped him up but I felt like what I would do next by selecting JT O’Sullivan(14.06) put me in a position with 4 QBs to where I didn’t have to have Quinn no matter what he does this season. I am the only team with 4 QBs, but I didn’t start until the 8th round so I am happy with what I grabbed. I knew the teams were not expecting me to keep grabbing QBs but I was comfortable with what I put together in the beginning of the draft at RB and WR.
Nice trio. You'll score well with this group.
RB: SJax(1.07), J.Stewart(5.07), Chris Johnson(6.06), Warrick Dunn(16.06), Lorenzo Booker(17.07). Jackson was a very nice find at #7, he catches a lot of balls. I have seen enough of Stewart to be ocomfortable that he is going to at least get a lot of red zone looks when they get near the goal line, but he ahs a lot of explosion too…might not be the complete split so many think. I had to calculate what I could get away with and still land Johnson. I took Stewart over DWill banking that with 2 RBs on his roster already that Legacy would simply scoop up DWill who I know he loves in either the 5th or 6th round…my plan worked and he took DWill(a fine RB) in the 6th, and Johnson fell to me…I was doing cartwheels at that point. I find it funny that Legacy took White in the 7th...we now both own one-half of the other’s backfield…be interesting to see who ends up with the better end of the straw there. Dunn and Booker make nice depth for late round picks. Is my backfield the best? Nope, but it has a lot of potential and I am excited to have both Stewart and Johnson on my roster in best ball. I would have liked more depth at RB, but I had to pass on a lot of RBs in the 7th-13th rounds as I loaded up on other postions…I wanted guys like Bradshaw or Norwood but just didn’t pull the trigger. I settled for Dunnin the 16th as my RB4 and I’m fine with that.
Jax was a nice gift. But not much happening after that. This will be your downfall.
WR: Andre Johnson(2.06), Plax(3.07), Calvin Johnson(4.06), and Joey Galloway(7.07) make up the core of my WRs and I like them a lot. According to FBG/Dodd, I have 3 top12 WR in this format…we’ll see if that holds true. I grabbed Jabar Gaffney(15.07) and Amani Toomer(18.06) to give me some depth and guys that should be consistent as the WR2 on their teams…I know Gaffney is actually the 3rd or 4th option but he has put Chad Jackson back on the depth chart. You have to love grabbing pats in the later part of the draft. I took a Seattle WR lottery ball with Courtney Taylor in the 22nd round instead of grabbing a PK2.
Excellent group here and will carry you.
TE: Again I waited a long long long time…and then I waited some more…and then I went to work on these guys. LJ Smith(11.07), Donald Lee(12.06), Anthony Fasano(13.07)…I went back to back to back at TE, best ball format and I like the trio overall. Not the best starting TEs but as a group I am sure one of them will produce every week. I was not trying to fill in at my flex positions but I do think some weeks that 2 of them will likely make my starting roster. LJ Smith was big time value as the 15ht TE off the board in this format with 2 PPR.
I wanted LJ and feel he's steal. So if he performs as I feel he will, you'll be fine. Otherwise you're in trouble.
PK: Kris Brown…just wanted to start the year with 1 of them initially till I start to make roster cuts and such. 21st round, fine by me.
Fine.
Def/ST: Again I waited till the last possible second and grabbed Tampa Bay(19.07),and the Indianapolis Colts(20.06). I like this combo and again if you read FBG rankings and projections, I have 2 top12 defenses and I waited a long time. I’m not delusional but I think this is fine to start the year with…both of them will see some cupcakes along the way.
Solid combo here.
Overall: I think I can compete for the division. I don’t have all stars across the board but I really like how I was able to load up at WR/RB in the 1st-7th rounds…probably could have waited 1 more round and done close to the same thing by letting Anderson go and grabbing JT O Sullivan as my QB3 and been good to go…still I like having some strength at QB, and I like my team initially…the development of Stewart and Chris Johnson likely holds the key to my season. I thought about going RB in the 3rd and then not drafting a RB for awhile but I’m glad I went the route I did.
Sean, I think you had a great opportunity to set this team up but missed on your RB2 and TE1. I think that's how close you are to having a kick butt team. You should still make the playoffs.
I hope this shows you some of the things to look for in best ball formats. This group was a lot of fun to draft with and I think they all were able to execute their strategies to some extent. Because of the competition there are a lot of teams bunched up, injuries will play a huge factor as always too. Look forward to reading the replies.
