Best episode of any TV show of all time? (1 Viewer)

The All in the Family episode that I always think of is when Mike and Gloria leave for California. The last 5 minutes of that episode gets to me every time.
That's a very good one. After they leave, when Edith is about to bring Archie a beer, and she sees him crying. The very first episode of "Archie Bunker's Place", the first episode since Edith's death, Archie is sitting on his bed and sees one of Edith's slippers under the bed, and brings it to his face.

Best comedt episode for me is Seinfeld: Marble Rye
I think my favorite Seinfeld is Jimmy, and Kramer going with Mel Torme to the "special needs" dinner. And speaking of Mel Torme, I think my favorite Night Court was when they went to Bull's apartment to find out he was taking care of a baby.

The ER where Julianna Marguelis (sp?) forms a friendship with the little sick boy who loves Green Day. The boy dies and she sings an acapella version of "Time of Your Life" at his funeral, while fighting to hold back the tears. Powerful TV at its finest. Had me balling.
Ugh. Sounds cringe-inducing in a not-good-TV way.
I'll add that the one ER episode that has always stuck with me was when Dr. Green lost the mother in labor, then starts bawling on the train ride home.
That's the one I was going to mention - had never seen ER before that episode and after that episode, couldn't watch it again. Heartbreaking stuff.

St. Elsewhere - the episode when Dr. Morrison (David Morse), who had just been widowed from his wife's tragic car accident, listens to his deceased wife's heart in the body of the transplant patient

That may be the most powerful episode of any show I've ever seen.

Had not watched E.R. in a couple seasons but I tuned into the finale of one season where Dr. Green was riding the elevator with a murder suspect or a guy who killed someone (drunk driver maybe) and he flatlined in the elevator or was having a heart attack and was watching Dr. Green charge the defibulator and uncharge it right in front of the guy. Could have saved his life but instead watched him die. That was powerful.
From ER, which had a lot of emotional eps over the years....I would pick: a) the above EP...or b) the one where the lunatic gets loose in the ER and stabs Carter, and as he's laying on the ground he looks across the floor to see Lucy with a sliced neck

Family Ties--when Alex goes to a therapist after his friend died.

Friends--early episode, Ross trying to keep them all on track to get ready to go out together, Joey puts on all of Chandler's clothes then announces he's "going commando" in them.

Even though the black and white distracts my kids, I still love many of the Andy Griffith episodes with Barney, who had so many :moneybag: moments. If forced to say just one, I guess the one with the "kerosene" pickles would be at the top.

Wonder Years -- Birthday Boy (Bar Mitzvah episode)
That's a great episode, but there are at least a few other Wonder Years episodes I'd put above it:- when Kevin's math teacher Mr. Collins dies

- when Wayne decides to join the Army, but fails his physical

- when Wayne's buddy Wart returns from Vietnam

ok not the BEST of all time

But Just Shoot Me - The Slow Donnie Episode made me laugh as hard as damn near anything I have seen

My favorite episode was when Kevin was breaking up with that girl Becky. They had the Star Trek scene and the Clint Eastwood scene with the tubmleweeds blowing by. Classic.

Someone's going to nominate "Once More With Feeling", Buffy the Vampire Slayer's musical episode ... so it might as well be me. Sounds cheesy, but it's actually pretty impressive.
This was my other thought but you know, Hush is better because it's hard to have good writing without writing.
I would agree. Musical episodes of any show has become such a played out gimmick that OMWF hasn't aged very well. For instance, the musical episode of Scrubs mentioned at the beginning of the thread wouldn't even rank in my top 10 Scrubs episodes. Hush was much more original and hasn't really been imitated at all. Heck, "Grey's Anatomy" recently did a freaking musical episode.

Pine barrens is the most overrated piece of crap in history. Male the case for it boys. My case against:

-diversion from the red hot arc of that season, derailing the amazing momentum they had

-writing inconsistent with the paulie and Christopher characters

-the stupid Bobby bacala stuff

For me, the best sopranos and the best piece of television ever done is the finale of season 4 when Tony and Carmela split. Unbelievable tension, up there with any movie for me. Amazing.
I don't think "Pine Barrens" is the ultimate Sopranos episode like a lot of people do, but it would still be in my top 10 Sopranos episodes. -The Gloria relationship continued to show major cracks.

-It began the slight (but fairly unspoken) rift between Tony and Paulie that lasted until nearly the end of Season 4.

-It was just plain funny.

Also, saying it diverted from the arc of the season doesn't hold water when you consider that they often did that. Two other prime examples:

-In Season 1, just when Junior is made Boss, the next episode was "College," which didn't even have or mention Junior. It all got back to him, though, in the next episode and no momentum was lost.

-When Ralph and Tony had their falling out near the end of "University," everyone expected it to hit the fan in the next episode, but it didn't. In fact, it was barely even mentioned in "Second Opinion," aside from Junior asking Tony about it. "He is Risen" was next, which focused mainly on the Tony/Ralph feud, and, again, it never felt like any momentum was lost.

My favorite is "Simon Says".

John Cleese guest starred as a famous relationship psychiatrist in Boston for a conference who stops by for a drink. Diane recognizes him and gets him to assess the relationship between her and Sam. Of course, he tells them that they are totally incompatible and should break-up immediately.

Diane spends the entire episode stalking Cleese, desperate to get him to change his mind. Finally, he explodes (Cleese delivers an epically funny rant) and Long gives one of the funniest looks and lines to ever end the show: "See..."

Diane (to Simon): You are the wisest man I know. Simon (to Diane, after glancing at Sam): High praise indeed.

:lmao:

But Just Shoot Me - The Slow Donnie Episode made me laugh as hard as damn near anything I have seen
"My pants are tight!!!"
"Chicken pot chicken pot chicken pot PIE!"
Donnie DiMauro: I'm Donnie with a D. Green quarter. Maya: What?

Elliot: He likes it when people give him money.

Maya: Oh, um... here.

Donnie DiMauro: [throws away quarter] Green quarter!

Elliot: He likes paper money.

Slap Bet - How I Met Your Mother

17 People - The West Wing

The One with the Embryos - Friends

Trapped in the Closet - South Park

I Dream of Jesus - Family Guy

"No, Donnie want a kiss like on Showtime."

*Seinfeld~the Gum*Cheers~When Cliff has the electric shock treatment*Family Ties~Andy's 1st day of school*Get a Life~Spewey & Me*Taxi~Elaine takes Jim to a fancy party
this list. I like it.
nothing family ties with andy it it can be on any listhe's the oliver of that show, the lame attempt to add a cute kid in when the cast grows uphe sucks
Unlike Oliver, Sam (Diff'rent Strokes) and Lil Earl (What's Happenin), Andy was the straight man and they didn't force into something he's not. That said, Family Ties did jump the shark with the new kid, but that episode is great (2nd to the homecoming episode in my Fam Ties rankings)

Hmmm. . .

Haven't read the entire thread (just the first and last page). In my mind, you really have to separate the sitcoms from the drama shows.

-- The M*A*S*H* episode where Hawkeye is having nightmares so his psychiatrist friend comes to see him and gets him to recall the suppressed memory where he told the lady on the bus to quiet the chicken she was carrying (the enemy was all around), only it turned out that it was a baby she was holding. I've only seen it once, and it still haunts me.

-- WKRP Turkey Drop (i think it's been mentioned, but is a classic). I also remember laughing so hard that I couldn't breath in the "phone cop" episode, and appreciate the beauty of the "Venus teaches the atom" episode.

-- I liked the seinfeld "backwards" episode for the pure inventiveness of it. Wasn't the best, or the funniest, but quite possibly my favorite. (and doesn't it pre-date Momento?).

-- Second the Cheers Kevin Mckale episode.

-- The "Dregs of Humanity" 2-part episode from the Jason Bateman show It's Your Move. Certainly not in the same class as the above, but I appreciated the show.

-- The Taxi episode when one of the characters (Jim?) could see the future, and predicted that Devito would die at the end.

-- There were a couple of incredible NYPD Blue and ER episodes from the early 90s. I'd have to think a little more on it.

-- And of course, the "Darmok and Jalad at Tenegra" episode from Star Trek TNG.

-- Finally, there was a little heralded cartoon a few years ago: "Avatar, the Last Airbender." The crappy movie by M. Night was based on it. It was a fantastic show, and in particular there was one episode, Tales of Ba Sing Se, that is stunning, where Uncle Iroh (uncle to the runaway fire prince) remembers his dead son.

Californication - "Blues from Laurel Canyon" ... Lou Ashby throws his last big party :banned:

Good one! This was a long lost memory of an episode that was very disturbing. The psychiatrist in this episode played his role great off of Alda. This is the type of show that rattled the conscious of a nation and it played against the guilt of the post-vietnam era.

i think that is actually from the last episode of the series.

Correct.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodbye,_Farewell_and_Amen

Star Trek TNG - Best of Both Worlds - Picard is captured and turned into Locutus

Babylon 5 - War Without End - Easily the greatest "wow" moment of my tv watching life on the huge reveal.

BSG - 33 - Incredible first episode that left you absolutely breathless watching it.

Firefly - Out of Gas - Fantastic writing interleaving wonderful back story moments wrapped in a do or die type of main story.

Buffy - Hush - Nothing more needs to be said about this that has not already been said a million times.

The Wire Season 3, Episode 11 is as good as television can ever get. It is perfection.
