Just ordered an S8+ with Best Buy's Black Friday deal. That + my $250 Verizon gift card = phone cost me under $300 out of pocket FTW.

This will be the 1st phone I put a case on. Looking for something that will protest it from damage if dropped, but not be super bulky as I like to keep my phone in my pants pockets. Not interested in getting a holster or belt clip for it.

I know Otter Box makes some, but they all look the same for the most part

Don't know if they make them for the Samsungs, but this has been great.  Takes a drop like a champ, less bulky than an Otter Box, and the kickstand is out of the way unless it's being used, and I find it invaluable.

One thing that's important to me is that the case is not too "grippy".  I know it helps for holding it, but it's annoying when all my money, condoms and business cards to fall out of my pocket when I take out my phone.

I've used a clear Cimo cases for the last 2 phones. Good fit, slim profile, good grip, no funky patterns or colors. $8 on average on Amazon with good reviews.

My current phone is only about 2 weeks old so no. But I've dropped my previous phone from hip level and zero damage. 
The Cimo case for my current phone has tiny air bubbles that act like shock absorbers I think.

I have the Note 8 version of this one, and like it a lot.  Just the right amount of grip, buttons work great, etc.

But then I have nothing against the company.

I just got an S7 for work and all that I could find quick and local for a case was an Otterbox Commuter case. I love it. Not overly bulky but feels well built and seems like it will protect really well. Not too bad at $25 on Amazon. I think the one I got was $40 at Best Buy.
