Best Role Players in the NFL? (1 Viewer)

Who do you got and why?

I am not a big fan of the Patriots but I respect them.

Kevin Faulk: This guy has been an awesome 3rd down back for the Patriots. He is a great blocker and one of the most consistent pass catching RB's in the league. He has won SB's and continues to be a great contributer to the Patriots offense.

Right church... wrong pew.Troy Brown is the first name which comes to mind.

Lorenzo Neal - San Diego How many 1,000 yard rushers has he blocked for now? All he does is clear out linebackers and he does it well.
And Mack Strong, clearing 1Kers since the original Curt Warner. Only missed 4 games since 95!. It was awesome to see both (Neal & Strong) of them at the ProBowl where they belong. Also Bobby Engram. The man catches first downs and is the WR Hass misses most when he is not on the field.

Move both these guys over a notch and add Wesley Welker to the list. If he's doing the dual returner deal and catching the underneath routes, the flair routes, he's more valuable in NEP than he was in MIA...whcih is plenty valuable in returner scoring leagues. :pokey:

Welker could be that guy, which is why the pats signed him, but if you look up "role player" in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of Troy Brown. The Patriots are full of players like this. I may not be a fan, but I do like the team for the way they play.

Throw in: more in the spotlight (so maybe out of place here), but still the consummate professional team player, Hines Ward.

I'll take Devin Hester and Mark Anderson of the Bears.

A rookie Returner and a rookie situational Pass Russ Specialist who logged 12 sacks as a rookie.

Mike Furrey probably fits the bill.

DB for the Rams prior to 06

Receptions leader in NFC for 06.

will probably become a swirl of all the other receivers listed above him in this thread in 2007.

Never letting the ball hit the turf helps too.

Dwight Freeney.
Can you explain how he is underrated? I know there are some on this board that don't hold him in the highest regards, however making the cover of sports illustrated and being known as one of the better devensive ends in the league really doesen't translate into underrated.

I have to agree with those picking Troy Brown. I can't think anyone else that would give up their wr position to play on the defense just to help the team. I also would be one proud papa if my son made it to the nfl and conducted himself and played like Troy Brown. My chest would enter a room about 5 minutes before me. That being said I can't stand the Pats especially their coach.

Underrated? Who said he was underrated? The word "underrated" didn't appear a single time in the entire thread until you said it.The title of the thread is "BEST role players". Dwight Freeney is a role player- the coaches only ask one thing of him, he's nothing but a role-playing pass-rushing specialist. He doesn't cover, he doesn't play the run, he just has a single role- and of all the players in the NFL who just fill a role, rather than being a complete player, I think Freeney is probably the best. If anything, I think Freeney is overrated, not underrated. He gets as much respect as complete players, despite being nothing but an overglorified role player.

I can think of several. For instance, any marginal WR who would never play in the NFL as a WR would probably be more than happy to help the defense if it meant playing time (or, at the least, a roster spot). Jarius Jackson switched from QB to Safety for the Broncos because he had a better chance of making the roster. Plus there's Mike Furrey, who is like Troy Brown on steroids- he set receiving records in college and in the Arena League, and then switched and played a full season as a defensive back for the St. Louis Rams because they had a dire need at the position. Not only did he make his switch while he was still in his prime (unlike Troy Brown, who made his switch after he was a #4 or #5 receiver, at best), he actually earned a starting job (unlike Troy Brown, who was only a nickle or dime CB). And then Furrey switched back to offense and had a phenomenal season last year.

:sarcasm: about Furrey. Also, I actually forgot that this thread (my thread) was best role player, not most underrated player. The Freeny post makes perfect sense now.
