Not even close. This Phillies staff is great. But it is unlikely to top the 98 braves and I am sure a number of other former staffs.

ERA+

1998 Braves - Maddux 187, Glavine 168, Smoltz 144, Neagle 117, Millwood 102

2010 Phillies - Halladay 165, Oswalt 143, Hamels 132, Lee 130, Blanton 84

I think it should be 2011 Phillies. 2010 Phillies consisted of Halladay, Hamels, Blanton, Happ and Kendrick as our opening day starting 5.

Plus Blanton will be traded. That 5th starter will either be Kyle Kendrick or Vance Worley.

I love the phils, but the braves have 3 HOF'ers on that staff. Plus Naegle and Millwood were solid #2's on any staff in the league back then. Phills have 4 Ace's but how will they pitch this year is yet to be seen.

Maybe not within the last 15 years, (but still in the modern era), the 1971 Orioles staff matches up pretty well too. 4 man rotation, in the American League but just before the DH started. Notice those inning pitched and complete games. Saves leader had 11. Last staff to have 4 20-game winners. Let's see the Phillies match that.... :lmao:

Mike Cuellar 20-9 3.08 ERA 1.122 WHIP 124 K/ 78 BB 21 complete games 292.1 IP

Pat Dobson 20-8 2.90 ERA 1.102 WHIP 187 K/ 63 BB 18 complete games 282.1 IP

Jim Palmer 20-9 2.68 ERA 1.195 WHIP 184 K/ 106 BB 20 complete games 282.0 IP

Dave McNally 21-5 2.89 ERA 1.097 WHIP 91K / 58 BB 11 complete games 224.1 IP

This is the clincher when considering the '98 Braves. Not only do Oswolt, Lee and Halladay have to match the stats of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz, you have to hope Hamels and Blanton's replacement can win 33 games combined. That just seems like too much to over come...

1964 White Sox

Joel Horlen ERA 1.88

Gary Peters ERA 2.50

Juan Pizarro ERA 2.58

John Buzhardt ERA 2.98

Gary Peters ERA 2.50

1997 Braves pitching staff is the greatest pitching staff of all time and I don't even think the Phillies staff is even close to that.

1888 St Louis Browns

1 SP Silver King 45-20

2 SP Nat Hudson 25-10

3 SP Ice Box Chamberlin 11-2

4 SP Jim Devlin 6-5

5 SP Ed Knouff 5-4

That was back before all of these ####### today who can't go more than 7.

3 - 5 were just fill-ins on the days that 1 - 2 couldn't pitch.

Buster Olney mentioned how the Mets traded for Frank Viola, which gave them a rotation of Cone, Gooden, Fernandez and Viola--and that didn't work out so well.

And they all won 20 games. That record will stand.

1997 Braves Pitching staff was better than 98.
They used a 4-man rotation in '97, so it wasn't directly comparable. But you could compare the Phils' big 4 to Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine/Neagle for that year too...Maddux 19-4, 2.20 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 177 K / 20 BBGlavine 14-7, 2.96 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 152 K / 79 BBSmoltz 15-12, 3.02 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 241 K / 63 BBNeagle 20-5, 2.97 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 172 K / 49 BBvs.Halladay 21-10, 2.44 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 219 K / 30 BBLee 12-9, 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 185 K / 18 BBOswalt 13-13, 2.76 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 193 K / 55 BBHamels 12-11, 3.06 ERA 1.18 WHIP, 211 K / 61 BB
