Best scoring system for Defensive points? (1 Viewer)

My league currently gives a Team Defense 2 points for each sack, 2 points per interception, 2 points per fumble recovery, 3 points per safety, 2 points for a blocked kick, 6 points for any touchdown on defense or special teams. I see other systems that give points also for yards allowed, points allowed, etc.

I think it's too much to get points for sacks, interceptions, etc AND also points for low points/yards allowed. It just seems like double dipping; if you hold a team to only 7 points, you probably have a ton of sacks and interceptions as well and I don't want defenses to be putting up 50 points on a good day since defense is just one roster spot and defensive performance seems very random.

And yet I hate to just depend on sacks and interceptions because sometimes a team does great defensively but just doesn't generate turnovers. So what do you think is the most realistic way to score defense, in that the best defense will score the most points while also being balanced to the overall fantasy game?

1st let me say that my league scoring system is on the low side (highest scoring team averaged 56 ppg last season, the lowest scoring team averaged 38 ppg) so you would have to adjust these numbers if you are using a “standard” scoring system.

Each team defense/st in our league starts out with positive 8 points to start the week, the rest of the scoring as follows;

-.02 per passing yard allowed (-2 points per 100 yards)

-.05 per rushing yard allowed (-5 points per 100 yards)

.02 per yard on interception, fumble & punt returns

.10 per opponent punt

.50 points per sack

1 point per turnover forced

1 point per blocked punt or extra point

2 points per blocked field goal

2 points per safety

8 points for a shutout

4 points for giving up 1 to 3 points

3 points for giving up 4 to 10 points

1 point for giving up 11 to 13 points

0 points for giving up 14 points or more

6 points for td’s (includes punt and kickoff returns)

Top 5 defenses under this scoring system

Jets (0.56 ppg)

Packers (0.26 ppg)

Eagles (-0.54 ppg)

Ravens (-1.06 ppg)

49ers (-1.12 ppg)

Bottom 5 defenses

Redskins (-6.08 ppg)

Lions (-6.39 ppg)

Jags (-7.59 ppg)

Rams (-7.63 ppg)

Raiders (-8.35 ppg)

:coffee: why shouldn't defenses be able to put up a lot of points on a good day? That's just what it is, a good day. In all my leagues, every position is capable of putting up the same points as a star QB or RB. Makes it more exciting when your opponent only has his defense left to play on Monday night and you're up by 25 points. You know there is a possibility they can cover that if they have a great game.

Just like real football, sometimes your best offense is a good defense.

I don't have a problem with defense scoring a lot, like say 30 points on an amazing day, I just wouldn't want that to be too common or 50 point games being the norm since defense is pretty unpredictable, situational and random.

I run my league for free on Yahoo, so we can't do anything about yards, but I definitely make team defenses as much a part of the scoring as any other position, and a great week from your defense can swing the scoring in a big way. Here's my setup:

Shutout: 25 points (definitely a big game changer, but shutouts are very rare and should be rewarded as such)

1-6 points allowed: 15 points

7-13 points allowed: 10 points

14-20 points allowed: 5 points

21-27 points allowed: 0 points

28-34 points allowed: -5 points

35+ points allowed: -10 points

Safety: 10 points

Team Sack: 1 point

Team INT: 2 points

Fumble Recovery: 2 points

Blocked Kick: 2 points

All TDs (both defensive and STs): 6 points

---------------

We also start 2 Individual Defensive Players (at any position)

Solo Tackles: 1 point

Sack: 3 points

INT: 4 points

Forced Fumble: 2 points

Fumble Recovery: 2 points

Defensive TD: 6 points (all TDs in my league are worth the same, 6 points)

Pass Defensed/Deflection: 1 point

Safety: 10 points

Blocked Kick: 6 points

--------------

So basically, if you nonchalantly don't address your team defense and/or IDP's, it really does make a huge difference. The swing between having an elite level defense and a middle of the road D is just as impacting as having a stud RB compared to an average league back.

In my league, your DEF/ST starts with 30 points. We subtract only the points given up by the DEF/ST. If you have PIT and Big Ben fires an INT returned for a TD it does not count against the PIT DEF/ST, same goes for fumble returns. We then add 2 points each for INTs, sacks, fum recs and 6 points for TDs. Any TD over 40 yds gets an extra 2 points. It can get hairy on any given weekend. I've seen negative totals and I've seen 50+ on the high end. The average is in the 20s though.

A couple scoring systems listed don't give enough credit to the safety. It's 2 actual NFL points plus possession of the ball. Don't score it on par with a sack. I think 5-6 points is about right. Someone above mentions 10 points but, although rare, that seems a little high to me.

It is not really about the total points a defense can score, but the dispursion between a poor and great one that matters. Variance.

So adding a constant doesn't help, but increasing the distance between the lowest and highest values for points allowed and yards allowed does.

Here is one I like and have used. Gives points for both few points and yards allowed, as well as some for individual plays such as sacks, INTs, and safeties. Gives defenses real value, IMHO, without being silly.

Number of Punt Return TDs 6.00 points each

Number of Kickoff Return TDs 6.00 points each

Number of Defensive Fumble Recovery TDs 6.00 points each

Fumble Recoveries (from Opponent) 2.00 points each

Number of Interception Return TDs 6.00 points each

Interceptions Caught 2.00 points each

Number of Blocked Field Goal TDs 6.00 points each

Blocked Field Goals 1.00 point each

Number of Blocked Punt TDs 6.00 points each

Blocked Punts 1.00 point each

Blocked Extra Points 1.00 point each

Sacked a QB 1.00 point each

Safeties 3.00 points each

Total Net Yards Allowed 0-100 12

Total Net Yards Allowed 101-150 10

Total Net Yards Allowed 151-200 8

Total Net Yards Allowed 201-250 6

Total Net Yards Allowed 251-300 4

Total Net Yards Allowed 301-350 2

Total Net Yards Allowed 351-400 1

Total Net Yards Allowed 401-450 0

Total Net Yards Allowed 451-700 0

Opponent Offensive Points Only 0-1 12

Opponent Offensive Points Only 2-5 10

Opponent Offensive Points Only 6-10 8

Opponent Offensive Points Only 11-15 6

Opponent Offensive Points Only 16-20 4

Opponent Offensive Points Only 21-25 2

Opponent Offensive Points Only 26-30 1

Opponent Offensive Points Only 31-35 0

Opponent Offensive Points Only 36-40 0

Opponent Offensive Points Only 41-45 0

Opponent Offensive Points Only 46-50 0

Opponent Offensive Points Only 51-100 0

Edited to add: I could see making safeties 4pts given other values.

Something you may want to consider is

Entertainment value

Credit where credit is due

Sacks & Picks are dramatic and it is fun to watch your fantasy outcomes change with these plays - 4 points

Forced Fumbles the defense created turnover - 4 points

Fumble Recovery (Fatty fell on the ball) - 1 point

Safeties are a rare and special - 6 points
