Best time of day to give your two weeks notice? (1 Viewer)

Mr.Pack

Accepted a new position. Going to give my two weeks, I know im leaving them in a bind.

What's the best thing to do here?

Thanks

I don't think it really matters much as you have to be there for 2 more weeks. It's not like you can drop the bomb at 4:59 and peace out forever. Just let them know at a time when your boss who will be most impacted has time to hear it out and think about how they will move forward.

Yes this.

First need to know if they will consider this good news or bad news before i answer.

(Just kidding gb)

As others have said, dont think it matters. Just tell them right away.

Congrats on the new job Mr. Pack.   There's really nothing magical about 2 weeks - it could be one week, one day, or several months.  It really depends on how difficult the transition will be, how much you respect your current employer, and - I think above all - how urgent or important your start date is at the new place.  In my experience, we often think leaving a job is going to create a hellish situation for them, but they adapt and you realize after 5 days or so that you can probably leave any time.

I'm in IT for a company that has very high security requirements due to what we do and who we do it for.  The instant you put your notice in, you're asked to leave (and paid for two weeks).  I'd put mine in first thing in the morning!

If everyone in your office knows that and that's 100% ironclad ... people at your place should never really give two weeks.

Get your personal stuff together and off your computer. After that, there is zero benefit in waiting longer.

Why would anyone give a legit 2 weeks then?  Just put it in on your planned last day and get paid an extra 2 weeks?

A lot of the IT people do just that.  Others choose to take a two week break.  The only exception really is management who has any elevated permissions removed and then work on a succession plan.

I talked with my boss about 30 minutes later. He was happy for me but seriously bummed. I know I'm leaving them in a bad way and feel bad, but I gotta do what I gotta do. The surprise and angst from coworkers is off the charts.

Thanks guys

whatever is most convenient for you cause lord knows, they wouldn’t think twice about when to tell you they are letting you go.

Last year(a year ago today, in fact), I had to give my old job 1 week notice before I started electrical work, because my new job needed me to start ASAP. They actually wanted me to start even sooner, but I convinced them that I couldn't just leave my old job like that with no notice, and they went with it. I felt bad I couldn't give them 2 weeks, and they were sad to see me go, but they were understanding.
