Best TV I can get for <$600? (1 Viewer)

Looking to get something in the living room finally. All we have is an ancient, huge, rear projection, non-HD, 52" tv in there. Finally time to get rid of that. We don't have normal FBG money, so I am setting a $600 limit for myself. Looks like with the push for 4k, all the other TVs have dropped in price again. I don't care about 4K (I obviously don't keep up on technology) and I don't care about a smart TV (we live where we have satellite internet, so a smart TV is pointless). Just looking for the best bang for the buck, and I would guess that I am looking at something in the 47"-55" range. We have a Vizio in the bedroom that I have never had a problem with, but didn't know if there are other brands to look at first.

Also, what are the stats that I am looking for? Is refresh rate more important than the amount of colors, etc...? All help is appreciated.

About 4 years ago, I picked up a Samsung 47" LCD at Sam's Club for ~$425 and it has been an awesome TV. Crystal clear picture and never had a minute's trouble with it. I would suspect you could probably get a little bigger one now and still stay under your budget.

I was wondering if getting a Sams Club or Costco acct would be the way to go if I saved more on the TV.

We don't have a Costco in my area, but Sam's always has great prices on electronics. IIRC, they do promo weekends from time to time that are open to the public.

Also, FWIW, the Comcast agent that installed my cable/internet said he also had a Samsung HDTV and, in his opinion, they were the best and he'd never buy another brand. And that's coming from someone who has dealt with a lot of TVs. :tinfoilhat:

TCL -- IE a Roku Tv. Don't just trust me, read the reviews on Amazon. I don't have this one, I have their 40 inch TV. I needed a 3rd TV, saw it at a store for much less than other TV's, saw the amazing reviews and tried it.

It's awesome, and it really feels like a "next generation" tv.

i think just saw a 55" vizio at walmart for about $570. That is what got the wheels turning.

I am all for getting something through Amazon for Black Friday, but will not go to a store for that.

most of the deals can be bought online unless its a 'doorbuster'. I got my plasma from sears online a few years back during BF. The sale went up the day before BF and I stopped by a few days later to pick it up to avoid the chaos

I was looking on amazon, and kept seeing these pop up. I had never heard of the brand, and assumed it was a cheap brand. Why do they seem to be a bit cheaper?- looks like there is a 48" one for $400 too.

I can vouch for both the TCL and Samsung products.

We went with Samsung in the living room and went with TCL as a cheaper option for the bedroom. Both have been solid TVs. No complaints.

How does the picture stack up between the two? Is there a difference in the user interface between them?

Wouldn't a 55 foot picture be a little big for a living room?

Maybe he lives in an airport hanger, did you ever think of that?

You can get a 55" Vizio 1080p LED Smart TV for $598 right now at walmart.
Don't ever buy a TV from Walmart. Their TVs are cheaper because the manufacturers use cheaper parts on TVs they sell to Walmart.
Walmart may have different model numbers with stripped down features/inputs/etc., but if you are comparing the same model number it will be the same TV at Walmart vs. anywhere else, same components, etc.

Could be a little drafty.

It would be a great place to hold a fantasy draft if you could put the draft board on that 55 foot tv.

Right, if the model numbers match, then you're fine. But if you find a model number at Walmart that you can't find anywhere else, proceed with caution.

Interesting. I see a Vizio E55-c2 on amazon for $648. I see an E55-c2 at Walmart for $598. Is there something else I need to look into, or would that be the same tv. Would you feel comfortable getting that at Walmart?

I keep seeing the Vizios recommended from sites for the picture, just keep seeing that a sound bar would probably be needed as well.

As long as the model number's match up, you should be okay.

most tvs will benefit from a soundbar these days. they are making the TV's more thin and in turn are making the speakers smaller to fit.

my brother in law picked up a 60" vizio from walmart on blackfriday for 650 last year. the tv is a beast and should be cheaper this year

If it hasn't been mentioned, look in to Best Buy price matching. I believe they were matching Costco last I checked a couple years ago, and pretty much every non third party retailer.

Good info. Do they still try to get you to sign up for Direct-Tv 10x per visit to the store?

No longer affiliated as far as I know.

Now they replaced that time with telling you how they are not paid on commission.

Yep, but now only after everybody in the store has pitched the Best Buy credit card to you.

Have to just walk in there with blinders on knowing what model you'll be getting and at what price. Go straight to a front lane cashier (not the TV department), give them the model and price you want and by doing this I think you'll be able to cut the crap down to 1 credit card spiel and 1 protection plan spiel.

The department specific sales reps are who you want to avoid at all costs. (I was one for about half a year)

I assume all the bonuses they get are for the protection plans? Honestly, are any worth getting?

No, I wouldn't recommend any protection plan really. Take care of your TV, defects will be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

The only plan they offer that ever really made sense to me was on headphones. Being able to lock up 2 years of replacement even on normal wear and tear damage is great. Or if you're prone to dropping and cracking phones/ipods/laptops then the wear and tear replacement makes sense for them too, obviously. They even cover spills, just about everything aside from throwing it off a building or in to the ocean.

edit- and yes, their bonuses are largely tied to the protection plans, that area is almost all margain.

I am looking into this also.

I want something like a 55" smart TV for 600 or less.

I see several at walmart and best buy. Crazy how inexpensive this things are compared to yesteryear

I want to get a TV for the living room as well, but I have no idea what all the verbiage that they show with listings mean as that kind of stuff doesn't interest me.

Is there a site out there they explains in layman terms that a stupid person like me might be able to understand?

Same here. But the way I view it, if I don't understand what most of the stuff is, then I don't need it anyway.

I will go with the cheap end of the 55" smart TV, like 550-600. To me, much better than some $1,200 TV with more features. Even if the thing conks out in 3 years, I will just buy another and will have equaled the price of the better ones.

Don't have a link but I'll give you a quick explanation:

Resolution - 1080p vs. 4k (4k has about 4x as many pixels as 1080p on an equivalent sized TV)

Technology - LED vs. OLED (OLED is the superior tech and has much better blacks and contrast than LED but isn't as bright (yet), which isn't good if it's in a bright room. It's also expensive right now)

Curved - IMO it add little value and not worth the extra money. Others have their own opinion though.

At this point few people are buying OLED due to the price. 1080p is fine on a TV up to about 50" as long as you are sitting 8-10 feet away (I know some people claim to have super vision but whatever). On TV's that are 60+ inches you can notice the difference between 1080p and 4k become noticeable, but unless you're really picky a 70" 1080p is still watchable from 10+ feet away.

That's been my advice this year, although I would skip the 'smart' feature and get the biggest non-smart 1080p you can afford. The smart feature is not as useful as Fire TV or Roku.

ETA: in 3 years OLED 4k TV's will be cheap.

Some of the ones I saw are "smart" WITH Roku. Not even sure exactly what that entails, but that is what it says.

I have one of the chromecasts, and if it can do what the chromecast can do, which is basically netflix, youtube, hulu...............then it will work for me.

Or, I could do what you said and get a bigger TV for less money, non smart, and just buy another chrome cast :D

Are there any of those chromecasts or roku things that you DON'T have to plug into the damn wall?

Annoying. I can't believe the damn thing doesnt get power just from being plugged into the HDMI. Damn it

I've only used the Fire Stick and it gets power via HDMI.

Noted. If that is the case, then yeah, easily buy a TV for 100-150 cheaper and buy a fire stick. I dont need many things plugged into HDMI anyway

Considering how long you have gone without updating, I doubt you will need a soundbar. The sound is fine.

Dumb question - how do I go about doing this? I have been looking at TVs for the last couple days and don't seem to find one over about 30" that is not a smart TV. Like I posted in the OP, I couldn't give two ####s about a smart TV as I will not use that. Didn't know if there is a term I should throw into my searches or something. Right now after reading reviews, etc.. I am leaning towards the Vizio E-series TVs (either the 50" or 55"), but if I can get a slightly bigger decent non-smart TV for the same price range I am down for that.

It is sad that as many movies that I watch and that is one of my few passions, I am still rockin' a non-HD Tv in the living room. :bag:
