Better SS Prospect? (1 Viewer)

Bartlett is my #1 SS right now, I was hoping Escobar would take over down the road, but I also have Ian Desmond.

A few weeks ago I thought Escobar was the better of the 2, but now I'm not so sure. I should keep 1, and trade

the other, who stays, who goes? This is a keeper league.

Escobar will give you steals and not much else. Desmond has a little bit of pop to go along with his speed, but won't steal nearly as many bases as Escobar. I'd go with Desmond. He could be a 10/20 or 15/15 guy at short.

Just posted in the Nats thread that Desmond is officially the man at SS for the Nats. The Nats also have a huge gaping hole in the 2 spot in their lineup. If Desmond fills it, you're looking at more RBI opportunities than Escobar- who apparently they plan to hit 9th?- without sacrificing run-scoring opportunities. In fact he should get more, with Zimmerman and Dunn behind him instead of a leadoff hitter. And of course at 2 vs. 9 he'd get more at-bats overall.

I'm thinking longterm here.
Escobar's long term ceiling is much higher, especially because he's likely to stick at SS for a long time due to his superior glove work. Desmond's glove is lousy and almost cost him the job in spring, his bat will keep him in the lineup but I don't think he sticks at short more than a couple of seasons without drastic improvement...luckily he's on the Nats...for now. His potential numbers look pretty good at short, but at 2nd or in the OF? Not so much.I'd much rather have Desmond this season, but if you're not concerned about this season I'd prefer Escobar.

Just so I don't mislead anyone ... there's noise about putting Willie Harris at the 2 spot in the order. which reduces Desmond's value slightly in my opinion. Not a big deal, just didn't want anyone to snag Desmond on the assumption that he had the 2 spot locked down.

Where does this leave Desmond? 8th?

I think it might. My guess is that you're gonna see a lot of movement between the 2 and 7/8 spots, mostly because Riggleman is an "old school" manager who doesn't understand that you don't put a guy with a .310 OBP and no pop in the two spot just because he's fast and can bunt.

There's talk of Taveras platooning in RF (kill me now). If that's the case you might see Desmond hit second when Taveras is in if Riggleman is capable of learning. You also might see Desmond lock down the 2 spot if he starts out hot and/or the Fabulous Willies in RF start out as terrible as you would expect. But for now I wouldn't count on Desmond being the default #2, which is a shame because there's huge opportunity for fantasy production behind Nyjer Morgan and ahead of Zimmerman, Dunn and Willingham.

Desmond at 8th in the order is confirmed. I still like him more than Escobar though. Short AND long term. Unless you're making a pure steals play.
