Yeah, between being banged up, playing on the road and possibly looking ahead to Michigan, this seems like the classic trap game for MSU. Hopefully that won't be the case.

Bucky's game can be hard to watch at times, but they are such a well coached team.
Not at the end of regulation and OT in that game they weren't. Horrible coaching.
Kids being told to do something and executing it are 2 different things. The fact that they pull wins out like this every year, grinding out wins in the 50's and 60's against teams that run and can score amazes me.

Hate when my team has to play those guys.

Would definitely be nice to see them sitting on top of the Big Ten after tonight, and I agree. It's the type of game they using don't get up for. We'll see.:fingerscrossed:

Yeah, but the other thing this does is let teams like Iowa or UVA hang in games. So they certainly grind out wins but they also are vulnerable to some bad losses. I think this is a common misconception that somehow Bo is a better coach than Roy Williams or Calipari who plays at a faster pace.

What's wrong with Iowa and Virginia? Both are solid teams.Roy can recruit like crazy, but he couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. When it comes to developing talent, game preparation, and in game coaching, Ryan is amongst the best in the country. He's never going to get top flight talent at Wisconsin, but he absolutely gets the most out of his players, and way more than Roy Williams does.

Name a team that is not vulnerable to a bad loss. Williams and Callipari are also great coaches, sure Ryan would appreciate being put on a list with them.

I can't believe people are supporting Bo Ryan. He should be vilified. He ruins every game WI is involved in. Its just horrible, ugly basketball. And that's the reason he can't get good players - why would any good player want to play for him? Its awful. So he's a terrible recruiter who plays the worst kind of basketball. I wish the Big Ten/NCAA would take the lead from the NBA and actually call fouls.

Yes, but the point is, when you make it a 60 point game, when you make it a 60 possessions game, you give less opportunities for the better team to separate itself. When you play at a faster pace, you increase the chances that the team with more talent will win out. Roy Williams adapted this philosophy and never looked back. So it allows a less talented Wisconsin team to hang with Michigan but then allows a less talented Iowa team to hang with Wisconsin. Yes upsets happen, but with this pace, your margin for error is reduced. Bo Ryan is a good coach. It just seems some people overrate his coaching abilities based off the fact he wins games in the 50's or is always in close games.

I'm serious. Remember when Pat Riley almost killed the NBA? What did the NBA do? It cracked down on fouls and opened up the game. The NCAA/Big Ten should do the same.

Didn't realize it was that easy! Think a lot of teams should try this out if that's all you need to do.He's got something like a 70 percent winning percentage coaching in the Big 10, got to a 100 wins in Big 10 in the 2nd shortest time, been to the sweet 16 handful of times and an elite 8. The dude can flat out coach.

He's made the NCAA tournament 11 straight years. His teams will never beat themselves. They don't foul a lot because they're in great position all of the time defensively. They don't turn the ball over. Extremely disciplined. Excellent fundamentals. I guess that's all "the worst kind of basketball," though. He has 7 players in the NBA right now. And he coaches in freaking Wisconsin. But yeah, he's a terrible recruiter and no good player would want to play for him.

I heard this exact argument on PTI the other day, almost word for word.

Good win on the road for State. Looking forward to the big clash Tuesday.Team is playing very good team basketball right now. Amazing with all the injuries the success they are having.

As a MIN fan I hate Bo Ryan too but no doubt he's a great coach. It pains me to admit it but if Bo was coaching the Gopher's superior talent MIN would probably have 2 losses in the Big10 right now, rather than 5-5.

IU at OSU to start the morning. Will be surprised if the Hoosiers win in Columbus. Plus, have to listen to Clark Kellogg slobber all over the Buckeyes.

So how do we know the BigTen is better this year than in the past? Based on the schedule prior to the BigTen schedule? Names? Supposed talent? Looks? I said this a couple years ago and was lambasted then but never really got an answer.I always wondered how people know if a conference is superior based on only teams playing in conference games.

Can't get good players...terrible recruiter?? He gets players that fit his system. They might not be the best "athletes" but they are damn good basketball players. He recruits, smart, disciplined kids with the heart to play defense. Playing smart basketball takes the right players and good coaching. Bucky does it as good as anyone.

:goodposting: Look at these numbers, including a 76.4% career winning percentage (not including last year and this) . How many coaches on that list would you rather have coaching your team? From Wikipedia:

At the end of the 2011-12 season Ryan had a 72.6 winning percentage at Wisconsin.[1]

He has a 76.1 career winning percentage. Among coaches with 500 career wins his percentage ranks second only to Roy Williams.

In Big Ten Conference play Ryan has a 71.0 winning percentage. That ranks first all time among Big Ten coaches with at least five years of experience
Thad Matta and Ryan are neck and neck for winningest (by percentage) of all time in the Big 10.

Agreed. He can be a beast. If he and Oladipo both play like they did today, few teams will even have a chance to stop them.
Alright, well now that we are past all the accolades for Ryan, where do you put him? Top 2? 3? 5? 10? 15? 20?
Hard to rank coaches, as many get great players just because of the prestige of their programs, which makes them look like much better coaches than they really are (i.e., Roy Williams IMHO). I think he's an excellent coach that has the ability to out coach any other coach right now. In most cases, he'd be able to beat your guys with his guys, and beat you when he has your guys, and you have his.
The lack of a scoring big man is killing the buckeyes. They have zero inside presence.
I've seen Williams, Ross and Thomas look like they play big this year. Today that is not the case.

So essentially what you've just said in a few more words is that Bo is the best coach in the game?

Nope. Did not say that. I said that is MOST cases he can out coach the other guy on the court. Recruiting is another HUGE part of the game, and he is not able to recruit the best athletes in the country nearly as well as others. This is partly due to WI not having a storied program, and also to players not wanting to play a defensive oriented game. I would say, for a school like WI, he's the best damn coach they could expect.

Ross and Thomas are wings. Williams will be good when he is a senior. When the buckeyes roll out craft, Scott, ravenel, Thomas and Thompson, they have exactly one shooter. The lineup needs to be craft, Thomas, smith, Ross and ravenel/Williams. Ross and Thomas are the only ones that can actually create their own shot. Great defensive team not so good offensive team sans Thomas.

OSU's offense seems like it struggles when it gets behind. Thomas starts pressing and I wouldn't want to rely on Craft for scoring. They need a consistent 3rd scorer but at the same time, Oladipo, Zeller and Watford went a combined 22-33 (5-6 from 3) and 21-25 from the FT line. Can't expect to win when those guys do that.

This rated the coaches last July and had Ryan at #9. It is hard to just take the recruiting out and do X's and O's b/c as mentioned, coaches recruit for their X's and O's. Give Shaka Smart Wisconsin's roster or Ryan VCU's roster and the results would probably be disastrous. But ESPN also had Ryan as 9th in X's and O's (My link) I could see the argument that he should be a bit higher but I'm not sure how you put him over Self, K or Izzo with their tournament success.

Who ends up winning the Big 10? Looking at schedules, it is still anyone's to win/lose:MSU (2 losses)= MI x2; @ OSU and INDIN (2 losses)= @MSU, @ MI, @MN and OSUMI (3 losses)= MSU x2 and INDUW (3 losses)= @ MN, OSU, @MSU OSU (4 losses)= @ WI, @ IND, MSUIf anyone can end up with just 3 losses, they should have first place alone. With that said, it's hard to see somebody finishing with just 3 or less. I have to think the winner of IN at MSU on Feb 19th would have the upper hand, but MSU's schedule is pretty brutal. I'll pick MSU to beat IND, who hasn't lost at home all year. Yet, they could easily have two other losses (@ MI and @ OSU). Thus I'll predict...MSU 4 losses (lose @ MI and @ OSU)IND 4 losses (lose @ MSU and @ MI) MI 4 losses (lose @ MSU)WI 4 losses (lose @ MSU)For a 4 way tie!edited to add: I expect WI to probably lose at MN and probably against MSU as well, but I like the 4-way tie idea.

Nice opinion piece. There are way too many variables to ever know. With BB, just one great player can make a coach look great really fast. I can't argue him much higher than #9 overall. For a place like WI to have a top 10 coach, they are darn lucky.

:goodposting: I agree and the margin between these guys gets razor thin. And trying to compare Stevens/Smart with Ryan with Crean is impossible. I got no gripes with him in the top 10, it just seems like when some talk about him, they want to put him in with Wooden. Now how Rick Barnes gets on any of these lists is beyond me.
