A day late, but Michigan played pretty well yesterday. They have some groin pains but I liked what I briefly saw out of them in the 2nd half.

That being said, that game was a prime example of why Bucky is going to miss Traevon Jackson. I've been a big critic of him for quite some time but he's a guy that would have settled them down while they were throwing up bricks and Michigan was crawling back in. Bucky wins by 10 in regulation if they have Jackson.

My dad was elected to the De La Salle Hall of Fame last year (no joke) and he had a chance to talk to Thorson and he told him Travis went from zero interest to very interested once Pitino started talking to him.

I love Reid Travis but my time was part of Marcus Travis who may not have made his name but was still excellent. I doubt there are videos of his time.

Tomorrow is a trial by fire for Maryland. I'm not speculating; I'm sure.

I'm local and I know when Bloomington is ready to get weird about a game, and this is one of those occasions.

That being said, I still expect Maryland to win. They can attack from basically every position on the floor, and I just don't think Indiana matches up well against that.

I'm looking forward to it either way, and I hope Indiana catches a little bit of fire from outside to put fuel on the flames that the crowd will be burning.

Maryland's bigs aren't much of a scoring threat these days. The combo of Dodd/Cez/Graham struggle to get double digits as a group most games. Smoltczyfkhdsa is a nominal big, but he mostly hangs outside.Maryland's perimeter, on the other hand, is as good and deep as most any in the nation. Layman is a matchup nightmare when he comes to play. Trimble everyone knows about. Dez Wells still isn't right after missing all of that time, but he's a tough nut for a defender. Pack & Nickens are the keys, IMO. If one or both of them are on, it makes MD very hard to defend the whole game.

I know next to nothing about Indiana this year, but they seem to be built the same way as MD at a glance.

I have watched almost every Hoosier game this year and have zero confidence in them. They have some good, streaky players. Have not seen one second of Maryland this year so looking forward to it.

Terps can be really sloppy, but they get after it on D most times and they hustle. This is the closest to a classic Gary Williams team since he left. Difference being that, since Juan Dixon ain't walking through that door, a freshman is their go-to guy.

I've really enjoyed watching them play this year. Been following them much closer than my own Wolverines Just wanted to see how they'd adjust to the B1G and they are fitting in fine as I thought they would. This kind of play seems to suit them just fine.

We'll see. The area is SO rich in HS talent. They can't get them all - the big boys will poach a lot of them and JTIII is in town - but just get a decent share and work your contacts elsewhere. There's no reason 5 of MD's 8 top players on average can't be locals and the Terps be in the Top 25 consistently.

Lefty screwed a lot of this up 30 years ago (real or perceived) and Gary wouldn't do much more than dip his toe in the local AAU slime.

Michigan did not play that well, but Nebraska was terrible shotting the ball and lacked hustle. Michigan has to win the next two to have any shot at a bid, which is a very long shot.

Layman has not played well so far. Smotrycz is hesitant to shoot, and has been passing up open looks, for several games now.

Layman seems to fold when someone puts a body on him early on. If he can't play in the open court (or spot up for 3s) he seems a little lost.

Smotrycz actually scored a few baskets!

If I were OSU, I'd either keep throwing up 3s or give the ball to that jumping jack inside. Maryland has no answer for either.

My observations from the game tonight...

* Russell is a superstar. He's a lottery pick this year.

* Ohio St., not Maryland, is the 2nd best team in the B1G.

* Smotrycz is terrible. Maybe it's the injuries, but he can't play defense and he won't shoot the open three. He's passed up several open threes tonight, and it's a trend for the past several games. He's been putting it on the floor and driving lately, but he turns it over too often for that.

* Teams have learned that Melo often drives and is only looking for contact, not to score. They're backing off and not challenging his shot on those drives.

* Graham or Dodd needs to play the 5. There isn't enough defensive rebounding without one of those guys. Smotrycz and Cek can't bang with the B1G.

* Dez's wrist is still bothering him. There are a lot of points when he's playing defense off the ball, where he's shaking his right hand in a "trying to clear the cobwebs" fashion.

* I don't know what's happened to Maryland's defense. This is three games in a row where the opponent has lit them up from outside.

* Maryland gave up with about three minutes to play, but I suppose I can't complain. They weren't making a comeback tonight.

Overall, three poor games in a row is concerning. I'm not sure what to think going forward.

No American conference thread so will post here. Coach Knight is tearing it up doing color for the UConn - Cincy game tonight. Lots of good comments on having his team "do things I liked" instead of "doing things I didn't like" "...they got to learn pretty fast what I liked."

Kid gets a 2nd technical foul for mouthing and he says, People may not like this, but if he were on my team he'd be doing stairs laps from around 7am tomorrow morning ...at go at least until I had a good lunch."

He has only gotten real playing time the last 4 games. Had pretty good games, but this is a real coming out party. November and December he was 1-10 from the field missig his first 9 shots.
