Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (4 Viewers)

So Michigan probably needs to be 10-8 or 11-7 in conference to be considered, no? Still doable, but IMO, they don't deserve to be in any consideration after some of those OOC losses. Just no excuse for stuff like that.

Gonna be judged on what this team does with Walton, really need him back for Indiana next weekend if not Iowa during the week. Don't think we can afford a loss to the Hawkeyes now.

I would guess 11-7. Yeah, those out of conferece hurt. They need a few big wins to wipe those off. Two huge lost opportunities within a week.

Maryland has now played four subpar games in a row. Dez was incredible tonight, as was Graham. Smotrycz still passes up open three after open three, and he seems to have no other discernible skills. The good news is that he didn't play much down the stretch. I really don't know what's changed with Trimble. Two games in a row with no baskets. He seemed hesitant to drive tonight. On the plus side, his passing was very good.

What's up with this? I noticed it too.

I don't know, but it's been going on for the entire conference part of the schedule. He was really slumping before that, so maybe he's lost his confidence in that shot?

I guess that's it. He'll take like one a game, miss it, and go into a shell.

Blackmon is going to be a really special player for IU next year.
He is so smooth, plays way older than a Freshman. I don't follow the NBA draft, hoping there is no way he would be talked into going pro
He will stay next year. So should Troy Williams. Yogi might be the biggest wildcard to go. If those three stay and they can add a good big man, IU is easily a top 10 team next year. Probably three late first rounders.

Much more important victory for IU, still without any bad losses. If they end the season well, should get a 4 or 5 seed.

Hope you are right. Hadn't really considered Yogi going pro even though he has played so well this year. Williams going pro would be a disaster for him from a basketball standpoint. If he waits one more year he is showing Oladipo-like level of improvement this year. Could be spectacular next year.

Other than Trimble, has anyone on Maryland done anything remotely positive yet? And, yes, they're down 23, but the officials aren't exactly helping. How on earth was there no foul called when Trimble got poked in the eye? Then to compound it, the officials don't stop play but allow Iowa to get a 5 on 4 three pointer. The foul against Dez on the fast break was also a horrific call.

The other thing I don't understand was when Trimble got hurt the first time, and had to leave the game, why did Dodd shoot his free throws? Doesn't Maryland get to pick who shoots them?

Oof.

Layman: invisible for most of the game.

Trimble: Good, not great.

Wells: Invisible for most of the game. Never got his post up game going, presumably due to Iowa's zone.

Dodd/Cek/Graham: More or less what you expect from this group.

Nickens/Wiley/Pack: Nothing positive of note.

Smotrycz: Couple good defensive plays, but really awful on the offensive end.

Ram: Wow! Sure, they were getting blown out when he came in, but he really gave everything he had and played way above his skill level.

That's now five poor games in a row for Maryland. It's also three blowout road losses in a row. Perhaps most worrying, I can't remember the last time Maryland started a game well. Every game, it seems, they get behind early due to turnovers and bad defense. After 11 minutes today: 8 turnovers, 11 shots, 1 basket. That's inexcusable. Unless Turgeon can get the offense back on track, this team is going to be lucky to end up 11-7 in conference.

Iowa played a good game today. Strong defense and the offense was consistent most of the day. Iowa did get some calls to go there way for sure. If Iowa could play this consistent in every game they would be a tough out.

Iowa played well, definitely. Never saw White play before; he's solid.

I'd be surprised if Woodbury doesn't get suspended for a game or more. I'm sure he's not intentionally going for the eyes, but he's certainly not been going for the ball. The conference needs to do something just for appearance's sake, at this point.

Wild game. Maryland was 5 of 6 down the stretch on the free throws, but missed a critical one, then gave Ferrell a wide open three to win it, but (for once) he missed. Does he always shoot 75% from long range, or just against Maryland? He's ridiculous. Williams is really good on the offensive glass, too.

Not 75% but pretty consistently above 50%, with an occasional off night to drag down his overall %.

I enjoyed watching the game even as a Hoosier fan. Blackmon and Johnson are much better shooters than they showed last night, and if either of them was hitting close to their normal rate it would have been IU at the FT line late trying to seal it.

Who is the dirty player that is poking everyone's eye out?

Adam Woodbury. I am very surprised that the conference hasn't said anything about it this week. I expected them to hand down a suspension. Ignoring it doesn't seem like the best course of action at this point.

In a way, I'm shocked that the conference's lawyers aren't insisting on some discipline at this point. If it happens again and a kid gets seriously injured, I'd have to think the conference would be in for a lawsuit.

Notorious TRE lives in Woodbury. Probably not a coincidence.

Boilers making a charge for the NCAA. Won 5 of 6 now and it looks like the light has come on for Hammonds. Need a few more quality wins and at at least one win the the Big Ten tourney to have a chance.
