Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (3 Viewers)

I doubt many stayed up to watch it, but what a game in Evanston. Demps hit a step back 3 with 2 secs after Irvin missed front end (was 9-9 from line) to force OT, then Mich is up 5 late in OT, Spike misses 1 of 2. Demps hits another step back 3 from the corner with 10 sec left, Mich turns it over and Demps drills corner 3 with 2 sec left to force 2OT. Cats win in double ot.

Saw it and loved the finish.

Michigan has some really nice pieces. Something's missing, though I can't quite put my finger on what it might be.

How many freaking layups did Maryland miss today?

I'm not sure Terps fans appreciate how important FT shooting is for this year's team. I'm too lazy to check, but I bet there have been 3 or 4 games they'd have lost if they only shot 70% from the line in that particular game.

It was quiet, but Graham had a nice, busy game inside for Maryland.
Honestly? It's the exodus of several very good players early to the NBA plus some significant injuries this hear in LaVertt and Walton. Not excuses at all, but I'm pretty sure Coach B didn't think all those guys would leave when they did. Doesn't have the depth necessary to take that kind of hit.

So what's at stake for B1G Tournament here in the last few days of play? I haven't looked at tiebreakers and all, but here's what I think is assured at this point:

Both Wisconsin & Maryland have clinched double-byes.

Then there appear to be 4 teams in the mix for the last two "we don't play til Friday" slots. Are any of them -Purdue, Iowa, OSU, MSU - locked into anything at this point? Or can Indiana and/or Illinois still be in play for a top 4 seed?

Wisconsin and Maryland have both clinched a double bye. I believe Purdue clinches a double bye with a victory over Michigan St., by virtue of creating, at worst, a 3-way tie between themselves and Iowa and Ohio St., in which they would win tiebreakers.

Indiana and Illinois are both locked into the middle group that will get one bye. Both Purdue and Iowa can finish no worse than 11-7, while Indiana and Illinois already both have 8 losses. Also, the worst Illinois can do is 8-10 (Indiana could finish 9-9), while four teams already have 11 losses.

Penn St. and Rutgers are both locked into the play on the first day group.

Gritty win over Purdue tonight. Glad to see Trice have a great Senior night.

Gotta give Painter credit. In the post-game he said the game was physical across the board. He said his team didn't brace the physicality like they should have and that MSU was mentally and physically tougher.

He also said he saw Hammon deck Costello and couldn't believe all 3 refs missed it.

There's the Purdue we've been waiting for. Back to back second half blown leads. Kendal Stephens is a complete waste of a player.

So what do the non-MD fans think of the Terps? Rich does a better job than I in giving a fan's perspective, but I'm wondering what those who are watching with unbiased eyes think.

How do you think Turgeon is as coach?

Melo?

Dez?

You know my thoughts. I have always thought they'd fit right in.

I have to say, I don't miss the ACC one bit. Glad to be in the B1G!
I do miss it. "#### Purdue" doesn't quite have the same ring as "#### Duke" yet. Plus, I don't think there's anything in the B1G like the Carolina mafia the rest of the ACC ghetto had to deal with.

This has changed a bit....the UNC mafia has been drowned out by the Duke/NCSU mafia....so very bizarre. Oh, and you can always say #### Duke.....that's good regardless of conference your team is in. Do you really miss archapeeastgrape derailing the threads week after week? That alone should be worth the price of admission to B1G.

I still read the ACC thread - can't help it, and most of the posters I really like so I suspect I won't stop.

It's just gonna be different for folks my age, I think. Young people will find teams to despise pretty easily - Izzo will be their Dean, I imagine. Brad Stevens, when he comes back to IU (it's gonna happen), will be their Coach K.

aaron white taking over for the hawkeys today. 16 points so far. uthoff and woodbury at 8 a piece. still a chance at a 2 round bye in the B10 tourney i think

Yeah, Hawkeyes have moved off the bubble in the right direction. ESPN's Bubble Watch had Iowa, Ohio St., and Michigan St. as locks before today.

What in the world was Valentine thinking there? I can't tell if Izzo is baffled at the call or at Valentine, but the call seemed pretty obvious to me.

Aaron White has been playing lights out during the five game winning streak for Iowa. I'm hoping for that double bye. What needs to happen for Iowa to get the four seed, does anyone know?

This is from BTN.com

4. Iowa (11-6): vs. Northwestern Could clinch double bye with win vs Northwestern but would need help (Could be seeded anywhere from 3-5)

The only way Iowa can’t clinch a double bye with a win is if Michigan State beats Indiana, Purdue beats Illinois, and Wisconsin beats Ohio State

Can’t fall below #6 seed at this point Can be as high as #3 seed with a win + tiebreakers but could fall as low as #6 seed with a loss + tiebreakers

I was at work, what did Valentine do?
Fouled Ferrell in the backcourt, MSU up 2 with a few seconds left. Wasn't the end of the world IMO because lately, in similar situations (actually we were up 3 in both of those times), we've let them take the ball up and try for the game winning/tying shot (which has gone in vs. Maryland and Minnesota), and we've lost the game. Most assuredly only up 2 in this situation, not the smartest play in the book, but this team's gametime IQ is one of the lowest I've seen out of a Izzo-coached team, and it worked out this this.

The ways it's been going lately, if Valentine doesn't foul, Yogi might make a 3 or get fouled anyway. Good to see the other team miss a shot down the stretch instead of suddenly draining every three.

Who knows, I've just seen it go the wrong way for us the last two previous similar times this has happened. We lucked out this time doing it the other way...

My guess is that Valentine thought the Spartans had a 3pt lead instead of a 2pt lead and that is why he fouled. If he had thought otherwise I don't think he makes that foul.

I think:

* Spartans are now 3rd, as they were undefeated against Iowa, Ohio St., and Purdue

* Iowa wins a 2-way tie with Ohio St. This means Iowa gets the last double bye if Purdue loses, regardless of what happens elsewhere.

* Purdue wins a 2-way tie with Iowa

* Purdue wins a 3-way tie with Iowa and Ohio St. (Iowa and Purdue are both 2-1 against the others, Ohio St. is 1-3), and Purdue wins the tiebreaker against Iowa. This assumes they use head-to-head to remove one team, then apply head-to-head again with remaining two teams. If they remove Ohio St. via head-to-head, then continue to the next tiebreaker for the remaining two teams, I believe Iowa would win by virtue of having beaten the higher ranked team (Maryland).

If the above is correct, Ohio St. has no remaining path to the last double bye.

Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan are locked into single byes.

Minnesota claims the last single bye with a win. Looks like a Minnesota loss cedes the last single bye to Northwestern or Nebraska.

According to Wiki, Ohio St. is locked into the #6 seed. That would imply that Purdue wins a 2-way tie with Iowa, while Iowa wins a 3-way tie that includes Ohio St.

Another close one for the Terps. I don't think I've ever seen a B1G basketball game officiated that tightly or that poorly. 51 total fouls, including one technical on each coach. I didn't see a foul on Petteway when he blocked Dez's shot with a couple minutes left. The refs also missed Layman throwing the ball off a Nebraska player and called a jump ball since they weren't sure who touched the ball last. Just a very different game.

Petteway takes too many bad shots. Shields was impressive.

Smotrycz absolutely cannot shoot any more. He's now at 31% overall, 26% from three. 0-15 over the last five games. That's crazy for a guy who shot 40% from long range just a few years ago. His defense had been very good recently, however, but I was unimpressed today. He did have a huge rebound in traffic down the stretch, though.

Michigan is delivering a beatdown on Illinois. Sounds like this will kill any chance Illinois had at the tournament.
