Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (11 Viewers)

That was not impressive. The offense was very stagnant without any penetration. Stone does have some skills around the basket, though.

Kind of odd that Ceko hardly played at all. Seems like he could have helped stop Rider's lane penetration.

Purdue looked solid closing out Florida down the stretch. Theses bigs are going to be a handful for the rest of the league.

That's the Maryland team we've been waiting for. Gotta keep playing like that.

Although, if I have to nitpick, might be a problem that Stone, Dodd, and Cekovsky all fouled out in less than 18 minutes each.

They won't shoot that well often, but it was good to see everything clicking for once. I thought they defended really well while it was still a game (they took their foot off of the pedal the last several minutes, which I did not like).

Sulaimon is better than I thought he'd be this early. Carter had his best game yet against the best bigs he's faced to date.

Cleveland State next, then a trip to Chapel Hill

So you're saying there's a chance?

Yeah, if you stop comparing them to '76 Indiana

What if they're bett...nevermind.

Go Terps!

:towelwave: (I hate that this is a steelers looking thingy)

If I were coaching against the Terps, I'd press the hell out of them. Melo - for all of his hype - is not good against an organized trap/press. When he's not bringing it up, they go to Sulaimon, who has the same issues as Trimble. Both are good FT shooters, but both will turn it over too much. Weird as it sounds, I think Brantley may be the key.

Oh, and nice to see Layman go into his shell against yet another talented opponent :yucky:

I really don't understand Layman. He's fairly coveted by the pros for his physical attributes but there is some skepticism about how good/tough a ballplayer he can be. You'd think he'd spend every waking moment (when he's not studying obviously) just working on his game so that when he gets drafted he can have an 8 year career instead of a 3 year one.

Yeah, I like aggressive Layman who goes straight to the hoop from the corner. Why does that guy only show up once every four games?

If I were coaching against the Terps, I would definitely press as much as my depth would allow, and stick with a zone in the half court. Terps have never been great at getting it into the bigs successfully.

Denzel Valentine might be the most improved player in the country. And he was pretty freakin' good last year. Just amazing what he's doing.

He really is fantastic. Has taken it to a whole new level.

I think the freshman are looking outstanding. I think Davis is already further along the Payne was his freshman year. Bess is the type of player we've been needing for a long time.

Good that State got out of that game with a win. Tough tough game. Providence is going to be one of those teams that gets an 11 seed, deserves to be an 8 seed, and ends up playing like a 4 seed for the first game or two. Someone is gonna have a really bad time with them.

I'd put Syracuse over Wisconsin. The Badgers just don't have enough shooters to contend with Syracuse's zone right now.

Oof, Terps. Horrid defense, 21 turnovers, yet somehow kept it close on the road, mostly via torrid three point shooting.

Layman was non-existent for the entire game. He has clearly regressed from last year, not sure why. As good as Trimble looked, too many turnovers and unable to finish his drives tonight. Sulaimon was good, Nickens was OK, the bigs played well on offense, terrible on defense and boxing out.

Edit: On the plus side, they did show guts repeatedly coming back from big deficits.

What's the story with Ohio State? They've lost 4 in a row. Are they not going to be good this year?
Playing with zero seniors and one junior. There is a walk on senior on the roster, but he never plays.

They've got talent, but the turnovers are killing them. They'll get better with experience.

Wow that MD Carolina game was fun. Both team's really lit it up, ultimately early turnovers suck MD. Even with all the turnovers and Carolina's torrid shooting, the Terps hung tough the whole game. Just as soon as the Terps would tie it late though, Carolina would hit a big bucket. Props to the Heels, they're really good.

The Terps are still a young team full of new pieces that should gell and get better as the year goes on. Really excited for this college bball season.

Purdue looked really good again for most of the game. Haas in foul trouble and not playing well, no big deal here's Hammonds. He was unstoppable. Good to see them finish off another game strong and put them away down the stretch with good defense, rebounding and free throws. This is officially getting exciting.

IU/Duke could be ugly. O/U on Indiana turnovers - 23? Too low?
I'll take the over. Hoosiers were only a 9 point underdog last I saw.

This is the kind of game they lose by 15+ easy. In the second half in particular when Duke takes a look at what they did and makes adjustments at halftime while Crean sits and works on his coloring books.

Oof? They turned it over a million times and still had chances to win the game. Yes they shot well, but UNC shot just as well. And Melo was fantastic and he finished quite a few drives.

It may be time to sit Layman, he looked like he didn't belong out there.

I mean oof as a predictor of the future. That is, we can be reasonably certain that the Terps won't continue to shoot 50+ percent from long range, which was the best thing they did last night. However, the fact that their turnovers problems, which have been an issue all year and before, got worse with a step up in competition is not a good sign. The fact that their defense, especially 3-pt defense, which has also been a problem, also got worse is not a good sign.
