Biggest Losers in FA (1 Viewer)

The Oakland Raiders stepped forward Thursday on the eve of free agency and signed Tommy Kelly to the largest contract ever  given to a defensive tackle. Kelly is coming off an ACL injury and being asked to switch positions. GREAT MOVE OAKLAND.

$10 million signing bonus and $5.5 million annually for Kwame Harris. GREAT MOVE OAKLAND.

I can't really speak much on Kelly, cause I never really heard of the highest paid DT in the league! Kwame Harris is a total scrub, If you want your QB on his rear end, you made the right move Oakland!!!

If you believe another team did as bad as the Raiders in FA, please, do tell.

At least give Detroit a chance...

Had they signed Troy Williamson, it would be a lock but the fact that The Jags did and then added the worthless Porter puts them in contention. They just spend $ and will receive very little, if any, in return. A negative return for Williamson and maybe enough out of Porter to end up with zero total return.

Less than twelve hours in and we're already voting on who's done the worst?

Could we give this another, I dunno, five or six months before we start passing out grades?

Let's just remember that...

...The book on the Giants after last offseason was they didn't "do anything in free agency", had a lame duck coach, no left tackle, no linebackers, and a team full of malcontents

...The book on the Packers was that Favre should've retired because they had no hope of contending, he was pissed that they didn't give him any weapons in free agency to boot

...The Ravens had a masterstroke by righting the offensive coaching staff, signing Willis McGahee and were ready to build off a 13-3 season

...The Broncos had re-loaded for another Super Bowl run by acquiring Dre Bly, signing Travis Henry and Daniel Graham

...The Jets acquisition of Thomas Jones was one of the best moves of the offseason and would help solidify one of the few weaknesses on this emerging team

...etc...

Let's not judge the offseason on February 29th please.

Killjoy.

Let's also wait for the team that signs David Carr to put their neam in the hat. Btw, when does his trial start for impersonating an NFL QB and bilking Houston out of millions?

Right after the Texans settle the suit filed against them for unsafe working conditions.

Agreed the jury is way out on these deals yet, but keep an eye on the Bucs. They seem desperate to unload their cap room. They're bringing in all kinds of FA's for visits. I think they way overpaid for Faine as well.

Not sure I see it that way*** Was Faine the best center available? YES*** Was Faine a proven NFL starter? YES*** Was Faine on the right side of 30? YES*** Do the Bucs need an upgrade at center? YES*** Does this signing realistically prohibit the Bucs from any other player on their radar? NOSeems like a fine move to me :D

No don't get me wrong, it's a good addition, I just think potentially 20 mill for 3 years is a bit too steep. Heck that's a few million less than Favre made last year.

This is flawed thinking. Every year is a different one. I don't know how many times it can be said, but with the cap rising to dramatically in recent years, there is more available cap money (by a wide margin) than at any other time in league history. By that fact alone, what a free agent is worth in 2008 terms is vastly different than what they may have been signed for in 2005-2006 or even 2007.

I agree with this. The salary cap isn't static, and $10 million (or any amount) isn't the same % of overall cap space every year. I can't swear these are the right numbers, but I think these were the cap limits for the last few years:2005: $85.8 million2006: $102 Million (18.9% increase over previous year)2007: $109 million (6.9% increase over previous year)2008 (est): $116 million (8.3% increase over previous year)$10 million in 2005 is almost $14 million in 2008

How much did the cap rise this off-season? I think the biggest winners will be the teams that sit back and let the morons do their thing...

EDIT: Thanks to the above posters...still think the Tommie Kellys/Jerry Porters of the world getting huge contracts spell bad-news for their respective teams. I can see a team splurging on the DT position considering the positions importance...but jeezus...
