If he's going to lose, Bill Belichick would rather be elsewhere

On more than one occasion this year, Bill Belichick and the Patriots have run up the score on an overmatched opponent, and forced an opposing coach to sit there and watch his beaten team go through the motions while their heineys were being handed to them.

But when the shoe's on the other foot, and Bill Belichick's team has been beaten, he can't sit there and take the pain for a few seconds.

With :02 left on the clock, and his team just having failed on a last chance 4th down effort, Bill Belichick ran onto the field for a quick handshake, and then bolted for the locker room. Belichick's an important guy and everything, but I wasn't aware that the league had given him the authority to decide when games end.

There's time left on the clock, his team's been humbled, outplayed, and lost their chance at history ... and Bill Belichick doesn't have the stomach to sit there and absorb the pain until the clock read 0:00.

That's unsportsmanlike at best, disrespectful at least, and at worst, it makes him a big sissy.

Because Bill Belichick wanted to go hide when he lost, the field ended up being flooded with people, and the officials had to clear the area before the Giants could take their final snap and make it official. When you lose, you take your loss. You don't leave early because it makes you feel sad inside. Your opponent deserves more respect than that.

Anyone remember in 2004 when Randy Moss left the sidelines with 2 seconds left in a Vikings vs. Redskins game? Moss was selfish, a baby, a quitter, didn't respect his teammates, and didn't respect the game. Belichick just did the same thing, but did it on the biggest possible stage, and did it from the position of a leader of men.

Maybe there's something to be said for the inability to lose well ... most great winners don't lose well, and a sore loser is still a loser.

But still, if you're an adult, you finish out the game, and you give your opponents the stage and the respect they deserve.

Edited title to show it right. Don't be confused and think Yahoo Sports is saying that. It's not on their news page but on their blog page. Huge difference.

I do appreciate the non-irony of Belichick and Moss forever being tied together for their poor sportsmanship decisions.

I would like to know if he knew or not that there was still a few seconds left... that does not seem to be clear. That being said.... It would be a lot easier to defend him if he did not have a long list of actions that show he does not understand what the word 'classy' means.

He can't see the clock reading 00.02 on the giant scoreboard?

 Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me eight times... no, I don't think so.Like you said, nothing really new here, but illuminating nonetheless.

Does anyone have a link to his post-game press conference? I saw Brady in a suit and tie talking, but not Belichick.

No link. The only thing I heard Belichick say was after Brady had completed either one or all of his statements: "I agree with that." or something similar.

No link. But he said the standard: "They made plays. We made plays. They made more than we did" Then he crawled into the corner of the locker room and cried.

Hey, trust me... I am NO Patriot or Belicheck fan and like I said because of his past actions, I do tend to think he just said 'screw it- we lost and I am not waiting.' and walked off.... but LOT's of peps thought the game was over. He came across and did the congrats. I actually said to my fiance 'watch him just slap his hand and walk away.' but he actually said something to Coughlin and then headed out like you normally would. There is a possibility that he did not know. I do think he did based off of previous acts as I said because I think he is a jerk.

 I couldn't post this any better. I thought it was pretty ####ty of the scorekeeper not to just let it run out after that last play. Everyone thought it was over and the Pats D had to come back out to watch them take a knee as if the loss wasn't bad enough.

Wha??? The Giants were giving the Patriots an opportunity to create a turnover with 2 seconds left.

Belicheck coaches a lot like I used to coach in Madden.

On my way to an undefeated season, running up mad scores and stats against all the teams - then some game comes by and "computer bull####" takes hold... suddenly my UNSTOPPABLE machine is struggling.

I end up chucking the ball on 4th and 13 and BOOM... miss. Never seem to recover and lose.

Then, with two seconds left, Im looking to reboot instead of face the music.

Even the great Lombardi was wrong.
While it was foolish, at least ANY comparison between Belichoke and Lombardi can be squashed once and for all.

15 yards for piling on.

This is an easy target for the Belichick haters. Belichick could have shown a some class by sticking around. But this isn't youth football either. It's not about whether or not you have fun, or how you played the game. (Aw shucks, we tried our best). It's about winning, and nothing else. For all intents and purposes the game was over. Did anyone really expect the Giants to suffer another Joe Pisarcik-like fumble.

Belichick paid his respects to the Giants coaching staff, got off the field and the Giants had their moment.

Belichik talked for literally two minutes. I'm not sure if any of his answers exceeded six words. Sorry, no link.

Couldnt have happened to a classier guy. No disrespect to the Patriots as they are a very good team and had a great season, but Belicheck is a POS and shows zero respect to the league, as much as a non-issue as this may seem.

That was a sweet red weightlifting sweatshirt he was wearing too.

This is a beautiful thing. A thread about the Patriots and now one cocky Patriots fan. The Shark Pool is back folks. The Shark Pool is back.

Other than people wanting to trash Belichick (as they obviously have an ax to grind), I don't see the purpose of this thread.

The game was over.

If it was the first half and there was 2 seconds left in the half, people walk off. Don't they?

He knew. The referee was there telling both of them they had to run another play. He just chose to ignore him. Watch the video. The referee is there telling him.

Belichek had to go review a couple videotapes to figure out what the Giants were going to call for their next play.

The players had to stay on the field for the last play, why couldn't their coach? What a selfish #####.

Exactly.

karma eventually catches up with you - this tool took blood money from an old man, embarassed an organization by resigning minutes before his press conference...on a scribbled sheet of paper; lied about the reasons for it; cheated to win; alienated his protege and treated him like a leper for advancing his career; cheated; ran up the score on every team he could; cheated; and now runs off the field like a baby with a second left - pewee ball teaches you to play it out until there is no time on the clock - he knew darn well there was two seconds left - his interview showed he was devastated and didn't want to face the music. Disgraceful and indefensible!

Well Billy boy - just wait until Congress gets hold of your cheating lackey - Goodell will not be able to "destory" him and you will be exposed even more as a cheater - your entire legacy will be tarnished and commish will have no choice but to suspend you.....

karma is a %$#%^#

Why would anyone expect anything else from BB? He doesn't care about anyone or anything except winning. He's a great coach but classless individual.

Its a proud day for all who care about integrity and the game! -me

Yes, a lot of people thought the game was over, but Belicheck was clearly being told by an official, as he tried to meet up with Coughlin, that there was still two seconds and he brushed him aside in a "yeah, whatever, I'm still doing what I want to do" move. Then he did it and left, all the while knowing his team still had to get 11 guys out there to officially end the game.

It was a jerk move and he deserves any of the critisim he'll get because of it, the same way Moss did.

We already knew this about him. Classless, while I realize he was disapointed you still stay on the ship while it is sinking and not jump ship like a big ####.

:lmao:I'm sorry, I can't stand Belichick either, but this response was funny.

Strange sequence, for sure. Clock clearly ran to "0". Then they put 2 seconds on, then 1. But the clock did run to 0 and that's when Belichek and Coughlin ran out on the field. Carey can be seen telling Belichek there is still time left and Belichek appears to brush him off. At least Belichek appeared to give a sincere "congrats" to Coughlin. As strange as the whole sequence was, it would've been arguably stranger if the coaches had to go through it twice. I think it would've been better if, after the false strat on the hand shakes, he simply watched the final 2 seconds from the sideline and then ran away.

Of course, the irony here (IMO) was that Randy Moss stuck around for the final seconds!

In Belichek's postgame interview ... did anyone else get the feeling Belichek was this close to crying?

Agreed. The odds are overwhelmingly against it but running that last play was actually more of a benefit to the Pats than Giants.
