Bill Parcells to coach SAINTS in 2012 ? (1 Viewer)

He might be well and rightly pissed, and still think the best thing for the franchise is keeping Payton.
That too.As far as I'm seeing, Benson is not taking much media heat at all for not cleaning house. PR-wise, being willing to keep Payton is not an untenable position for Benson.
i also wonder if there is some fear that if you fire Payton for an offense during the super bowl winning season, if it somehow invalidates that win or taints itif his crimes are so egregious that you cannot allow him to coach anymore, how could you feel pride about a super bowl you won during those very crimes? isn't celebrating that win sort of hypocritical?however, if it was an error, maybe even a horrible one, that can be punished and atoned for. Well, we are all human, we all err and ask forgiveness. In time this will healperhaps not, but it occurred to me
What would be the point in firing Payton or Loomis? They would be hired in the same position for another program in a heartbeat. They might even make more money. Benson would only be hurting himself by doing so.
i was not arguing they should fire them
I know you weren't. Some people have though, and it makes no sense to me.

Lots of talking heads whining about the Saints forgetting the Rooney Rule: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/29/herm-edwards-saints-are-making-a-mockery-of-the-rooney-rule/

Meanwhile, they are not allowed to interview any coaches currently employed by other teams. So either they find a minority on staff (none of whom are qualified) or they give a sham interview to someone like Herm Edwards or Dennis Green. So the NFL would rather the Saints embarrass the pride of someone with no shot at keeping the job than let the team hire an old white guy for a single year?

They can interview a college coach, Ty Willingham will be happy to walk in the door. The guy who was fired quickly by Pittsburgh

Doug Williams?

So ... they find a minority on staff (none of whom are qualified) ...
They're more than qualified to walk down the hall and "interview" with Loomis :yes:I've heard Colonial CC is re-opened in Harahan -- maybe Loomis can even work in a Parcells-like golf outing. EDIT: I wonder if fellow Parcells' protege Maurice Carthon (current asst head coach under Crennel in KC) would do Parcells & Payton a solid and interview for the Saints' interim HC job? Heck, Loomis & Benson can just fly to KC and do it at Carthon's dining-room table.

Reportedly the Saints can't hire a coach that is currently employed by another nfl team, so this wouldn't fly.

Rickey Jackson would interview for a bag of grattons and some school supplies.

Does the Rooney Rule actually impose any standards on how qualified the candidate must be, or how "legitimate" the interview must be? Would there be anything preventing the Saints from interviewing Rickey Jackson, or Deuce McAllister, or for that matter, just some dude off the street?

Not sure, but PFT offered this:
Although the Saints must comply with the Rooney Rule only if the Saints choose to hire an interim coach from outside the organization, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells PFT that the Saints may comply with the Rooney Rule by interviewing a current member of the coaching staff.

And so, if the Saints simply choose to interview every current position coach for the job, that necessarily will encompass newly-hired receivers coach Henry Ellard, which will allow the Saints to then hire Parcells without interviewing any minority candidate who is not already working for the team.

Hey Doug, you had some terrific perspective on things there. Are you OK with the appeals or do you just wish they would accept it and move on?
No problem with them at all. The appeals are calculated to buy duty-handoff preparation time. Might as well take the extra week or two while it's there for the taking.I believe it is assumed that Goodell will not reduce the suspensions.

This thread strangely died.

Now the party line is that Parcells is totally out of the running. Pat Kirwan, for one, believes that to be poppycock. Thought this would be a nice place to land this link:

The day the reports broke that Bill Parcells could potentially replace the suspended Sean Payton, I was in Palm Beach at the NFL owners meetings. At the time I interviewed 10 former employees of Parcells who know him as well as somebody could, given the fact Parcells is a very private person. Nine believed he would take the Saints job and one felt he might not for health reasons. All 10 believed he wouldn't come cheap and he probably wasn't in any rush to get things done.

Bill Parcells knows what he's doing when it comes to setting up his next situation. I was working in the front office for the Jets when we were trying to pry him away from the Patriots. I remember our team president describing Parcells as mercurial. Webster's dictionary defines mercurial as someone characterized by rapid and unpredictable changeableness of mood. That's Parcells to a tee.

Back then, his whole Patriots staff had their contracts expire in New England and were all in place at the Jets before he ever arrived. If you remember, we had named Bill Belichick the coach before Parcells ever got there. In fact, Belichick took up residence in the corner office and was truly the head coach. Not for one second did I believe Parcells wasn't on his way to New York. The Tuna didn't miss a trick about how the scenario would go down.

When he went to Miami as the GM, he had a clause in his contract that if Wayne Huizinga ever sold the club, Bill would be free to walk with his whole contract guaranteed. The club was sold as he suspected, and as we all know, Bill walked. In my opinion, despite Tuesday's reports he was no longer a candidate, he's still the odds-on favorite to take over the Saints for the 2012 season. He's just getting his ducks in order. He has a plan ... he always has a plan.

I had a good discussion about Bill Parcells potentially joining the Saints with Phil Simms last week. He believes he should take the job and probably is even excited about doing it. As Phil pointed out, Bill Parcells knows exactly how to put out the fire of expectations. He simply says he's not going to do it, and the story goes on the shelf for the time being. Joe Vitt the interim head coach and suspended for the first six games? I don't think so. That's more farfetched than Bill Belichick sitting in the corner office being the head coach at the Jets.

Wow, Pat Kirwan still thinks this is going to happen (audio link). Link is from today's Movin' the Chains. Speculative, but interesting that Kirwan's still beating the drum.
