*Bills safeties discussion thread* (1 Viewer)

Current indications are that we'll see Byrd FS/Whitner SS with Scott in a hybrid safety/linebacker role. Assuming no setbacks to those three (and they're all dealing with injuries still), Wilson will see very limited time.

Any ideas how Scott's playing time and numbers will be affected? Could he see enough time at LB to get increased tackles?

I don't think anybody knows what the Bills plan to do with him right now. He's been practicing with the linebackers for the past week or so, but they also have Nic Harris and Ashlee Palmer who can fill in for Ellison. Some reports have said they'd prefer to have a more experienced player out there which might give Scott an edge over Harris, but I thought Harris looked good in the last game. They may also just go with a big nickel that includes Whitner and Wilson or Wilson and Scott with one safety playing up in the box like a linebacker. Here is what Chris Brown had to say on the matter:

With Bryan Scott healthy and available and Donte Whitner practicing for the first time in three weeks there are many wondering how things will shake out at the safety position with Scott, Whitner and Byrd, who also practice Monday available to play. Whitner provided some insight Monday.

“I feel there will be instances where we’re on the field at the same time,” said Whitner. ”Whether it’s Bryan (Scott) playing linebacker or me coming down in the box and playing linebacker. We’re doing some things in order to keep players that make plays on the football field. That’s what the coaches are doing and I commend them for that. We have some guys that are making plays. George (Wilson) is making a lot of plays. We’ve got a deep secondary. Credit goes to coach Catavolos for getting guys ready dand being able to plug guys in when other guys go down.”

In no way is Jairus Byrd coming off the field in light of the performances he’s had in his last four starts. So moving guys around positionally on defense looks like a real possibility. Bryan Scott again practiced with the linebackers Monday. We’ll have a better idea as to whether that’s a more lasting position switch Wednesday when installation of this week’s game plan begins.

Defensive coordinator has made use of a three safety alignment in the past particularly against good running teams like Tennessee and Jacksonville that are next on the schedule. So it will be interesting to see how the safeties are utilized in terms of where on the field and when in terms of down and distance.
Scott still working at LB

Safety Bryan Scott might be a safety no more.

Scott for the second straight week practiced with the linebackers during individual position drills.

Whether her will see time in the game Sunday at LB remains to be seen.

Well, jiminy, what the heck does this mean?

http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2009/11/10...ld-glue-bills-d

It suggests that Bryan Scott's return is pivotal, but that he may no longer be starting!!! I snagged Scott when someone dropped him because he was hurt, but I don't want to take up a roster spot much longer. I guess I'll watch to see what happens this week, anyway.

Aaron, you're a Bill's fan, aren't you? Any inside scoop?

I thought I made a shark move getting Scott off waivers two weeks ago. Now... That article suggests Scott may play some LB, a position he's been taking some practice reps at. Also mentioned was how the Bills sometimes have 3 safeties on the field, suggesting Scott would play in the box. What a clusterflug.

Thx, Zoomanji, I hadn't thought to look there.

Rovers, I thought the same thing when I grabbed him! We may still end up looking like geniuses, but I guess it will be another week or two before we find out.

RD... LOL... I can't wait 2 weeks! I face a must win this week in the league I mentioned. I'll have to take a risk I think, and hope for the best with starting Scott. Given who the Bills play this week, and how awful the run D has been... I'll just hope they find a way to keep Scott on the field. I have other options, but it would be just my luck that Scott racks up 10 tackles if I bench him. I'm not too worried about his injury, as he was practicing last week before the bye. He should be healthy enough by now. :fishing:

I merged the threads to try and keep all the discussion in one place.

Sounds like Whitner will start at SS, Byrd at FS, and Scott may start or at least see some snaps at LB in place of Ellison. That could leave Wilson as the odd man out.

I think the Bills will probably try to play some more (big) nickel and dime defenses this week to keep 3 safeties on the field. The injury to Terrence McGee also may create more opportunities as Whitner has occasionally filled in as a corner in the past, and I imagine Byrd and Wilson and Scott could all cover some slot receivers as well.

I don't think Scott will do that much, but part of that is b/c I'd rather see them play Nic Harris at Ellison's spot. Also seems they'd want to keep Posluszny and Draft as nickel linebackers b/c having Scott as one of the two linebackers would probably make them pretty vulnerable against the run.

haha.....that's funny considering who we're talking about.
exactly.from this week's Buffalo News:
The Bills' defense is allowing 173.6 rushing yards a game, a pace that would be the most in the NFL in 26 years. Bills opponents are getting 5.1 yards a carry, which would be the 14th worst allowed in NFL history.
Scott isn't much smaller than Ellison but not sure how adding in an even more undersized linebacker makes much sense here. This is also contributing to the high numbers from Bills IDPs this year:
They have been on the field the most plays in the league (14 plays a game more than the league average).

Scott to start at LB?

It’s by no means a lock, but Bryan Scott began his second week of practice with the linebackers Wednesday.

The veteran strong safety has been working with the linebackers in practice since the bye week as injuries have decimated the position. Kawika Mitchell and Marcus Buggs have already been lost for the season and Keith Ellison’s status this week is up in the air with a quad injury.

With only rookies and special teamers behind the starters on the depth chart, the defensive staff has elected to give Scott an opportunity.

“We’ve been so unlucky there that it gives us what we think may be our best shot,” said head coach **** Jauron.

Scott got some first team reps at linebacker Wednesday. We’ll let you know if that changes as the week unfolds. Nic Harris seems to be the alternative to Scott.
Whitner believes he’s ready

from Inside The Bills by Chris Brown

If it’s up to Donte Whitner he feels he’s ready to return to the Bills defensive lineup.

The strong safety has missed the last two games with an ankle ailment, and missed two others following thumb surgery this season. But after practicing on a limited basis Wednesday he feels his chances are good for suiting up Sunday at Tennessee.

“Felt pretty good,” said Whitner after Wednesday’s practice. ”Did a little more than I did the other day. So it feels good. We’ll see how I do (Thursday). We have another day (Thursday), I expect to do a little more than I did today. Then we’ll make a decision Friday after Friday (practice) if I can go or not. In my heart I feel like I can all the time, but some people, coaches and trainers don’t feel the same way I feel all the time and that’s acceptable, that’s understandable, but if it was up to me I would say yes.”

Whitner is eager to get back on the field especially with the admirable play of his replacements in Jairus Byrd and George Wilson. Byrd is not coming out of the lineup after 7 INTs in his last four games. And Wilson is coming off a 15 tackle performance against Houston in which he was the team’s leading tackler and had a quarterback pressure that led to one of Byrd’s INTs in the game.

If Whitner does get cleared to play, it’s believed he’ll start at strong safety.

I'm afraid to start Scott his first week back from injury, especially when he'll be playing a new position. But if he starts at LB I'll be awfully tempted. Maybe I missed it earlier, but which LB spot is he most likely to play?

he'll be taking over for Ellison. should mostly line up on the weak side with Draft on the strong side.

I'll hang on to Wilson a while longer in case someone isn't completely healed. I have extra space.

Ellison (quad) is not participating in Thursday's practice, BuffaloBills.com reports.

Spin: Earlier reports suggested Ellison is a long shot to play this week against Tennessee. Safety Bryan Scott continues to take reps at linebacker as the team tries to figure out what to do with Ellison possibly out, and Kawika Mitchell out for the season.

I just picked up scott first 3 weeks in our league scored 19,25,15 had 27 tackles yes poz was out but moving him to lb raises his tackles and espn has him listed as a safety this week

Bills notebook: Scott returns from injury, shifts from safety to linebacker

By Allen Wilson

News Sports Reporter

Updated: November 13, 2009, 8:36 AM / 1 comment

Safety Bryan Scott has been spending most of his time in practice at outside linebacker the past two weeks. It looks like he'll get a chance to play the position in a game.

With Keith Ellison questionable with a quadriceps injury, Scott is expected to start at linebacker for the Buffalo Bills against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

The Bills could have gone with one of their two rookie backups — Ashlee Palmer or Nic Harris — or Jon Corto, but they decided Scott was the better option.

"We're kind of banged up, so wherever I can help out I'm willing to do that," Scott said. "Shoot, to be honest, I'm just excited to suit back up and get back out there with my teammates. It's been a long while, so I'm excited."

This will be Scott's first game action since Sept. 27 when he suffered a high ankle sprain in a Week Three loss to New Orleans. He was able to practice fully during the bye week and is eager to put the pads on again Sunday.

"The recovery process was long. Too long, actually," Scott said. "But I'm healthy and ready to go."

The 6-foot-1, 219-pound Scott lacks prototypical linebacker size, but he has the toughness and strength to play the position. The transition hasn't been too difficult because he is used to playing close to the line of scrimmage as a strong safety.

"Physically, I definitely know I can handle it," he said. "The challenge is we're seeing things from a different vantage point. You are trying to get comfortable with the reads because everything happens so quickly. Being back at safety, everything is so instinctive. You didn't have to think about it. It was second nature.

"Now I'm trying to make all the right reads and fits and the correct drops. But I know I'll be OK. It's just a matter of watching extra film and focusing my binoculars to get a different view. We'll be fine."

Scott will give the Bills some flexibility on passing downs. Although he'll play linebacker, it will be like having six defensive backs on the field instead of the standard five in the nickel packages.

"It does give us better coverage," said Bills coach **** Jauron. "Bryan has really done a nice job in the last year and going into this year covering the really talented tight ends. So he does give us a little more in that regard."

So...Scott is going to be an every down linebacker? At least for this week? That could be an interesting play...

Not much point in pulling out your undersized safetybacker in the nickel given that's the situation where he'll be least outta place...my guess is he'll play as much as the ankle lets him, which should be more-or-less all day, but even though I'm starting him in one league I'm leery that the same "interesting play" you're thinkin' of is gonna bite me in the butt.Been that kinda season for me though.

Ditto. I finally broke down and cut him for Reed Doughty. I've got a tough opponent this week and already have a nice lead from the Thursday night game. I don't need a high-risk, high-reward guy right now, I just want solid points!

probably the right move. i can't recall a IDP making a positional change like this over a matter of a bye week and being successful. if this was like Jermaine Phillips where he had all offseason then i'd definetly feel differently. with Poz/Byrd/Whitner/Wilson and possibly now Draft being so active on the field competing for tackles the guy playing the new position i don't see really producing. i guess best case scenario for fantasy purposes is that the Titans see him as a obvious weakness early on and they attack him all game and the Bills don't replace him with palmer or harris

Yeah, I quite agree on the Phillips analogy. And even then, I was a little wary, but he was certainly worth a pick to see how it worked out, particularly preseason when we didn't have as much evidence.

Closing the loop from posts in today's news and inactives thread:

Byrd and Wilson to start at safety, but Whitner is active. Scott is starting at WLB.

Anyone have any idea if Scott at WLB is going to continue? This is huge since he's categorized as a S in most leagues....meaning you get the opportunities of a WLB in the S position. In a tackle/assist heavy scoring league this makes Scott the best "safety" out there.

I think he'd have to be very good to hold the job when Keith Ellison gets healthy. The Bills haven't said whether Ellison will be out for a long period of time with the quad problem.

Scott was abused on the 1-yard TD run by Chris Johnson. When Chris Johnson is running you over, might be time to consider using someone else at LB.

Scott did chase down a lot of plays in pursuit with his speed though.

Any word on Scott/Ellison at WLB this week? If/when Ellison comes back, does Scott ride the pine or does he get a starting S position back?

Ellison has been placed on IR.

Marcus Stroud is OUT for this week, which could mean the Bills will be going with Spencer Johnson and John McCargo at DT. Look for a big game from MJD and all Bills IDPs this week.

Whitner should be ready to play this week but now Jairus Byrd is questionable with a groin problem.

Woah, with Ellison on IR, then Scott becomes a very valuable "DB," no??? :bag:
Absolutely! :) In a CBS league, I'm starting him at "DB" and I'm starting David Bowens at "DL"... in a tackle-heavy system, you should get a lot more consistent scoring out of both than you would in their traditional positions!

 Doing exactly the same. Gold!!!Can't wait for the controversies :football:

10 solo tackles, 1 sack, 1 ff, and 1 pd. Huge week for the best "Safety" in fantasy football. Let's hope the Bills keep playing Scott as a LB.

Strategy question: Am I overthinking it if I don't want to have both Paul Pauluszny (LB) and Bryan Scott (DB) in my lineup? Would that make me susceptible to a down week or would that give me balance?

THanks.

I'd probably start both, I guess depends who else you have at LB because there is no way I'm sitting Scott.

with the way the Bills have been playing, I don't see why you'd want to bench either of those guys.

I got Poz and Scott and will start them both to see what happens (1st time) -

Seems to me they are both going to be on the field a lot with that weak offense ....................................
