Bitting the bullet on what might have been vs holding on for dear life (1 Viewer)

I think this particular year has been challenging to most fantasy players as far as injuries go and especially those of us with small rosters. I was faced with the decision of chosing which potential (could have been) stud to drop in order to pick up a player that could actually get me some points come sunday. Some of these "would have been studs" have been out 4-5 weeks and it is now crunch time for many teams. The decision to hold a player for the final stretch verses needing a win now or there will be no playoffs comes into play. In my case I chose between Andre Johnson, Miles Austin, Jahvid Best and Peyton Hillis as to who I would drop for Helu and Jacoby Ford.

I dropped Austin and Hillis and selected to hold Andre Johnson and Jahvid Best. I thought it might be a helpful idea to create a cheatsheet as to which injured guys are the must hold guys and which are the cut bait guys. I do realize that the FBG 200 going forward does this to a certain extent but I dont always agree with the rankings on there.

Hurt player priority order:

1. Andre Johnson

2. Darren McFadden

3. Miles Austin

4. Ahmad Bradshaw

5. Jahvid Best

6.Payton Hillis

7. Mark Ingram

8. Santana Moss

9. Germaine Gresham

10.Malcolm Floyd

11. Hines Ward

12.Josh Morgan

13. Mohamad Massaquoui

Please feel free to add your own or modify the rankings. I left guys like Kenny Britt, Hightower and Peyton Manning off because they are done for the year.

Hurt player priority order:1. Andre JohnsonHold, he may not be productive till the fantasy playoffs, but worth stashing if you can survive till then.2. Darren McFaddenHold, a notoriously slow healer that's going to take the full 4 weeks of a 2-4 week injury estimate. But when he comes back, he'll be money.3. Miles AustinHold, but downgrade to WR5/6 on your team. Hammies are tricky to comeback from and it's relatively late in the FF season. Robinson and Bryant will carry on fine without him. 4. Ahmad BradshawDrop, I don't trust Bradshaw's rhetoric that he's fine. A broken foot's a broken foot. I don't see him coming back in any way effectively this season.5. Jahvid BestDrop, I don't see Best attempting to comeback for his 3rd concussion, a potentially career ending one, this year.6.Payton HillisDrop, He's got too much bad karma around him, Madden curse, team not backing him, even teammates..7. Mark IngramDrop, anything he can do, Ivory can do better. He's the 4th best RB on his team. I don't see any potential breakout unless a couple guys get injured.8. Jermaine GreshamHold, when active this guy's a stud. But only as the last man on your roster.9.Malcolm FloydDrop. He's erratic at best even when healthy. SD having a down year, upside limited.10. Hines WardDrop, even with Sanders likely done till December, he's old and slow and is looking more and more like Donald Driver.11.Josh MorganDrop, he's already on IR, isn't he?12. Mohamad MassaquouiDrop, no Cleveland WR is worth rostering, even Little.

Peyton Hillis isn't playing again this season. Hines Ward won't be relevant in Pittsburgh again. Josh Morgan is meh..plus Braylon is stepping up.

I think Hillis should be lower. Just from a risk (is he going to come back at all this season?) vs. reward (if he comes back, are you excited about him in your starting lineup?) standpoint, the odds aren't good he's going to have a positive impact on your roster this year. Especially with the way the Cleveland offense has looked and the daunting 2nd half schedule ahead of them.

Gresham barely even belongs on the list. He's should be back this Sunday. I wouldn't be overly worried about his injury going forward.

I'll say this too. I have no idea what's going on with Best, but to me he's the biggest wild card in fantasy football right now. I think there's above a 50% chance he's done for the season. But if he does come back, with that offense and that schedule, he could be a top 5 PPR back down the stretch...

I don't own him anywhere, but if I could get him at the right price, he's an intriguing guy. Even if its only a 25% chance he's back, it might be worth the risk if you have a deep roster.

I'll probably hold Best for this reason as well. As long as I am not missing on someone else with upside why not?

So where does Addai rank here? Gotta be somewhere near the bottom, or did everybody already cut him? He's still hanging by a thread for me thanks to the lack of information and a week 12 date with the Panthers.

AJ is THE obvious hold if you can afford to.

Aside from that, I think Best is the one guy you hang tight with because we on the outside are all ful of gloom and doom (fueled by the people that want Best's season to be over for whatever their personal reasons are), but at the end of the day he has a concussion; not a nagging hammy or turf toe or broken this or that. So, he could come back literaly at any time and he was a top 8 RB until he went down (PPR). Witht eh schedule and the likelihood that they will be playing for a playoff spot late, he could be that guy that comes in fresh and you ride the hot hand through your playoffs.
