Black Friday deals (1 Viewer)

Get a short throw projector no one walks in front of them. Higher contrast is the way to go. You wouldn't know my picture was a projector if you were just viewing it. It's "only" 1080p but it is great

I saw a bunch of you are looking for laptops and pc’s. Not a Black Friday deal but check out Best Buy’s Open Box deals. They have more Best Buy Outlets than ever. Some serious deals to be had and you can negotiate too in-person if needed.

I’ve also bought appliances from there. Saves thousands.

So true. I got my all of my new kitchen appliances for 30 cents on the dollar. Some were still NIB. Same with soundbars last month, got a high end Samsung with satellites and sub for 180 vs 1000 new. np box but works perfectly. Joining the $50/year club or membership is a good deal, it gets you 60 day returns and 5% back on all purchases.
And if you have a lot of downloaded content to manage, the 4 TB ssd external drive for 199 is a very nice price

I need it to do basic MS Office applications, and store small files. I use Word and Excel for small projects (small enough to fit on a 3.5 floppy). Not sure if a Chromebook can do that.

Edit to add: Seems close to what I want, especially if there are some "office-like" apps out there to substitute for Word and Excel, but I'm not really comfortable with uploading my files to the cloud.

So if anyone sees a good laptop or chromebook deal out there for Black Friday, holla back at your boy.

There's a bunch right at $250. Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, Amazon, Micro Center, Walmart... Dell. Some are 4gb ram, some are 8. So that narrows it down. The Dell is better than some and as good as any. It would be my choice. With promo code ARMMPPS you'll save $30 making it the lowest price of the batch.

eta: Costco has one for 150, but it's s l o w and has an awful screen. Don't.
A backlit keyboard is my top priority

I had 4 delivered today. Thinking of returning two the more I consider my wall controller project.
Wanna ship one of these to me? Walmart all out

Nope! I found a better controller that handles the audio from my avr. $480, so saved about 600 and the video wall is a happenin' pretty derned cheap. $1600 tops for a 130" 4k (@30hz) display. I opened all 4 boxes and tested the pictures. All good. Now, about mounting two of these upside down.

Set us up the pics when it's done.

For those that missed the TV deal, here is another solid one even though pricier than the previous.

75" TCL Q class for $549

Normally over $1K and even on sale at other places like Best Buy right now it's $900.
Just grabbed 9 so I can build my 225" TV wall.

9.5 ft tall and 16.5 feet wide

Works great in a room with 15 ft ceilings and 24 ft wide wall. Leaves a little less than 4 feet on each side for massive speakers.

This is making me laugh much more than it should.

life size? You must have a FBG sized schlong

Gonna go ahead and bump this in case anyone hears about Nintendo Switch deals.
Is switch still the thing to get? seems like it's been out for at least 4 years.
Shrug, my son asked for this specifically and nothing else for Christmas, easy enough. Turning 8 and his first gaming system, and I am good with getting him off Youtube etc., he watches straight up trash on there.

We got our 9 year old one two years ago. He still watches trash on YouTube. That said, it is pretty fun, and we do family game night with it from time to time (Mario party I think is the name of the game for that), as well as Mario kart. You can get a “docking station” that lets you plug it into a TV for that. There are two or three different versions for sale, we got the middle one (non OLED) that came with the dock.

Looking for ideas for a basic laptop for college. Lots of different price points but I’m not sure how to tell what is important.

First thing first. Is touchscreen a must? If so, forget about Apple.

Dell XPS
Lenovo X1 Carbon
i5 good enough unless going into some serious graphic engineering programs, etc.
16GB of memory

Yes they are more expensive, but they will both last you (or your kid) at least four years.

If touchscreen isn't important, can also add a Macbook to the two options above

Has anybody ever used one of these rolling knife sharpeners? I am very interested in finding a way to keep our kitchen knives sharp that doesn't involve me investing a lot of time in learning how to use a whetstone properly. These seem to be well-reviewed and I was hoping to catch them on sale in a couple of weeks. But a lot of kitchen gadgets are junk, so any first-hand experiences are welcome.

I would second this. An ultra portable with a spare monitor in their bedroom/dorm room is 100% the way to go. Generally, the internals are going to be less important than overall build quality as I would assume the computer is going to be thrown in a backpack, tossed around in said backpack, flopped tables/desks, have things constantly plugged and unplugged so the ports need to be solid.

Yes, I bought this one on Amazon. It's a little more expensive than the one you linked, but it has
  • 4 angles (I have found that for the knives I have, I need all 4 angles)
  • a handle on the roller; this makes it a lot easier; the model you linked to looks like it is just a rolling pin
  • 320 coarse and 600 fine diamond disks as well as a ceramic abrasive
I have whetstones, but wanted something that was faster. I'd say I can get the knives about 90% as sharp as the whetstone, but each time I use it I get better.

In case anyone is looking, Target has Mario Kart bundle for $75 off, both standard and OLED models. I went with the standard, the upgrade didn't seem worth it for what I was looking for.

I have the fixed angle stuff from worksharp and it is great.

I follow this guy for knife stuff, not only is he hilarious he gives really good advice. He covers the rolling stuff, and pretty much everything blade related.

We just put hardwood floors in on our main level, debating a Roomba since we have dogs that are constantly shedding. Anyone have one they care to share their thoughts on?

We have hard floors and have had 3 different makes of robovac over the years: Deebot, Roomba, and Eufy. We have a metric ton of pets (wife fosters), and the Eufy is our current favorite. Likes:
  • Easy to maintain/fix
  • Short and flat so it doesn't get stuck as often
  • Quiet enough to tolerate
  • Inexpensive
Dislikes:
  • Beeps about 2x as much as I'd like when it gets stuck. STFU robovac.
  • Some people don't like dumb robovacs that just wander around. Doesn't bother us, but some want more order in their lives.
