Something I had always assumed, but had never confirmed, about comic strip artists is that they created strips way ahead of time. Like they'd normally have months worth to draw from, and could thus withstand a few weeks or so away from the strip if they needed to.
That's what I always thought the occasional non sequitir strip was ... the artist just submitted a long-ago-drawn one-off.
