The original article is correct in it's primary point. No matter how long or hard Pats fans want to argue, the great recent success of the Patriot's franchise has been and will remain tarnished in the eyes of the casual NFL fan. It's it justified? That is certainly open to debate. But in the end it really doesn't change how the vast majority of people will remember SpyGate.
My earlier point was that statements like "the rest of the fansbase" made by a previous poster and "the vast majority of people" as stated in your post are factually inaccurate. Readily available polling data on espn.com, nfl.com, etc. indicate a very vocal minority of 20-30% of the gen pop who prescribe to your way of thinking. There is a war going on for the "hearts and minds" of those without such agendas, either way, and the minority appears to have lost.
I said "casual NFL fan". Do you really think casual NFL fans are on NFL.com and ESPN.com clicking on polls in the off seasons? The "vast majority of people" in this country have never been to NFL.com or ESPN.com. Ever. Don't let your love and interest in the NFL give you a distorted view of how most people follow the league.

NEWS BULLETINBill Belichick has a hot girlfriend and GREAT seats for the Celtics/Pistons game tonight. He does not care one iota what any of you think of him.And as for the guy that says he should resign. Yeah, he has the best team in football, has a chance to win a championship every year and makes $5 million per year. I'm sure you would resign your position immediately in the same scenario.
Yes, I would. I can see why a Patriots fan might think there is nothing more important in life than self-interest and winning. But for many of us, there are several.

In a survey, I can both agree with a statement that their videotaping gave tehm no material advantage and one that says their successes are tarnished forever.

There is no logical inconsistency.

I agree that those two statements aren't necessarily inconsistent. How many of the teams around the league have had their successes tarnished by crossing a moral code in your mind? 1 of 32?

Oh geez, from the Here We Go Again department.

NFL Live on ESPN is discussing the Patriots having their players on Injured Reserve and on PUP practice along with the rest of the team, which is against the rules. Michael Smith indicated he'd heard about it happening when he covered the Patriots for the Boston Globe. Ross Tucker, a former lineman with the Patriots under BB, came on and discussed it and said he never understood why they would do it since the extra practice reps even for a younger player seemed to him a minimal gain compared to how much players move from team to team so news of it was bound to get out.

Edit to add more: Apparently this also came up when Goodell talked to Walsh, and Goodell had said at the time it would be investigated. Michael Smith said he'd never seen this practice himself because practices were closed, but that former Pats staffers had told him that when NFL officials would show up for compliance checks, the team security would radio ahead to the field so the IR players wouldn't be caught practicing.
