Bobby Sands/ Hunger Strike of 81 (1 Viewer)

Been thinking a lot lately about the Irish hunger strike of '81...their principles were so strong that they let themselves starve to death.  Who among us would willingly make that sacrifice, especially in the context of what current terrorism is?  I'm saying this as a half-Irishman, so am obviously half-biased.  "What greater love can a man have than to lay down his life for his country?"  I know the IRA killed innocents...so that's why I brought this double edged sword up...would you starve yourself to death, just to hold up a principle?

God, I just read that wall of text...i need an editor...

I don't know but I'm such a miserable SOB when I miss a meal that I'm pretty certain someone would just put a bullet in my head after a day or two to put me out my of ( but more likely their) misery.

I lived in Manhattan during this and it was intimately followed, hour-by-hour, there. My, was there a ton of thuggery coming from Derry on both sides at the time and the strike rescued our embarrassment toward that and revived our pride over the heroism of Ireland's cause in the Six Counties. God bless their souls.

I don’t remember the name but the wife and I watched the movie about that a few months back. The opening 20 minutes was pretty shocking! I don’t think I would be that deFicated to do that!

No, the one we watched was called “Hunger”. The opening part of the film shows a new prisoner being taken to his cell and apparently the prisoners are painting their cell walls with their poo. Like all four walls and thick.

The "Dirty Protest"...it was the only "weapon"they had left, before they realized their own hunger could be the most potent weapon they could wield.  It might seem comical/disgusting in retrospect,  but they thought it was their last resort.  Sadly, it was not...starvation was.  They were basically Irish teenagers/early twenties , fighting oppression the only way they could, until it got politicized...& by then it was too late.

This may not reflect well on me, but no, I wouldn’t.
It reflects very well on you, my friend... :lmao: ...it was rhetorical, but thanks for answering, chubby..I probably wouldn't either.   Just trying to keep a serious subject light...a little bit 👍
