TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Anquan Boldin has a fractured sinus as a result of what he acknowledges was the worst hit he's received in his football career.

The Arizona Cardinals standout wide receiver doesn't know how long he will be sidelined, but when he returns, he says, there will be no change in his trademark tough, aggressive style.

"For me it was just a part of football," Boldin said after watching his teammates practice on Wednesday. "It's an unfortunate incident that happened but, you know, you take your bumps and bruises."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended New York Jets safety Eric Smith for one game and fined him $50,000 for the vicious, helmet-to-helmet hit on Boldin in the end zone during the waning seconds of the Jets' 56-35 victory over the Cardinals at the Meadowlands on Sunday.

"You never know somebody's intentions," Boldin said, "but I didn't think it was intentional."

Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said it wasn't for him to say whether the punishment was warranted.

"I think the commissioner certainly has made it very clear that player safety is an important issue," Whisenhunt said, "and I think he addressed that."

Boldin said he was consulting with doctors on whether to have the sinus repaired or let it heal on its own. He expected a decision "in the next couple of days."

According to the Web site, eMedicine, a high-impact sports injury is the second-most often cause of a sinus fracture. The most common cause is an automobile accident.

Whisenhunt said that until he hears from doctors, he is not ruling out Boldin's participation in Sunday's home game against Buffalo, although it seems highly improbable that he would play.

The two-time Pro Bowl receiver scoffed at any suggestion that this would change his bruising, aggressive style.

"As soon as I get back on the field, it's the same old me," he said. "I don't plan on altering the way that I play, because if I did, I wouldn't be Anquan."

Boldin, his face swollen and his lip cut, said he remembers everything about the play and its aftermath, although he said he may have lost consciousness for an instant.

He crossed the middle of the end zone and went high for Kurt Warner's throw. Boldin was hit in the back by the Jets' Kerry Rhodes, then from the front by Smith, snapping the receiver's head violently backward.

"I have a pretty good grasp of everything that went on, and after it all happened," Boldin said, "everybody all came out, me trying to get up and walk off the field, them telling me to be cautious, just lay there. I remember everything."

As Boldin was being strapped to a cart, Jets and Cardinals players joined hands in prayer nearby.

"We're a fraternity," said Warner, who led the prayers.

Warner, visibly shaken after the game, said it was the worst hit he'd ever witnessed.

"That was about as emotional as it gets," he said.

Boldin caught 10 passes for 119 yards and one touchdown on Sunday. In his sixth NFL season, he leads the league in touchdown catches with five and ranks fifth in yards receiving with 366, on 27 receptions.

He said he didn't know if he had a concussion in the immediate aftermath of the collision.

"I took a concussion test yesterday but everything was cool," he said.

Whisenhunt said he had seen a few scary situations like the one involving Boldin.

"As a player, I was on the team in New York when Dennis Byrd got paralyzed," the coach said. "I've seen both spectrums, where the guy was OK and the guy wasn't OK. We're just glad that 'Q' is OK and he's out here with the team."

One writer suggested that his jaw looked real swollen. Another that I heard on the radio said his face looks like he was beat up real bad or in a real bad car accident.

 
Looks like I'll be starting Breaston over Ochocinco.

Anybody know if a sinus fracture would indeed keep him out? How long it takes to heal itself without surgery?

The article in the OP cites this eMedicine webpage. It looks like a sinus fracture is no joke:
Surgical treatment, if indicated, should be instituted within the first 12-48 hours after the injury, if this is compatible with the patient's overall clinical condition. ...

Most nondisplaced anterior table fractures can be managed expectantly and nonsurgically, since these fractures are typically not associated with mucocele formation, although they may still result in cosmetic deformity.

Postoperatively, the patient should be instructed to avoid contact and strenuous activities. The patient should seek medical attention if any swelling, tenderness, fever, or mental status decrease occurs because these may be signs of acute frontal sinusitis, with or without meningitis, which may occur in the early postoperative period secondary to retained bony chips or foreign materials in the sinuses. The patient benefits from routine wound care instructions.

I believe once the pressure(swelling) goes down one feels significantly better rather quickly. That pressure though is supposedly quite painful and just in one of the worst spots.(Can't think of his name) That guy on the radio thought they should get him in soon like driving a car shortly after an accident. He was concerned his "I'll still play the same way" comments weren't sincere and even if it's just a few plays he's "getting back on the horse". I think he might have a point but it's a tangent all based on opinion of Anquan's supposed thoughts and there's no hard facts to go on. Might be useless chitchat
 
Which Jet got the suspension? The one that hit him from the back or from the front? Both of them hit him in the head from what I could see.

 
I'm trying to trade him ... Even if he comes back in 2 weeks I Don't think he'll be the same after a hit like that

I'm trading FOR him. Just got him for Matt Jones and Schaub in a league where the owner was panicked.Great time to buy IMO.

Yes, he will.Some guys have a certain football mentality to play the game a certain way, and Boldin definitely has it.

:goodposting: Why thank you. Admittedly, it irritated a few other owners in the league. Regardless, I'm sure this dude I traded with isn't the only person panicked out there so take advantage people!!! LOL
 
In a few of my PPR leagues, Boldin is the #1 scorer (nevermind the #1 WR). This is the time to buy (dynasty, anyway.)

:mellow: thatguy said it best. Boldin is one tough S.O.B. He might not come back next week but when he gets back in there I don't doubt he'll be as good as ever.
 
Warner geta slight downtick, as does Fitz (more double teams than normal) Breaston and Edge get upticks. Breaston for obvious reasons, Edge b/c I think there will be more dump offs low without Boldin over the middle.

Boldin will be back to 100%, I am sure, but maybe not for another month. I can't even imagine the face gear they would have to fashion for him in order to prevent a more serious re-injury. And he certainly won't be engaging in contact drills at practice.

Boldin is still consulting with doctors about whether a surgical procedure is needed for the sinus fracture or whether they just let it heal on its own, but he doesn't expect to miss time either way.

Unless he suddenly gets headaches he will play this weekend IF (and yes it may be big if) he is medically cleared by the doctor's to do so.

"Zero" he said when asked what the chances of him changing the way he plays. "As soon as I get back on the field, it's the same old me. I don't plan on altering the way I play because if I did, I wouldn't be Anquan."

I'm a Boldin owner, and I probably wouldn't trade him because not only is he the #1WR in the league right now, I have a huge mancrush on him. With that said, it would probably take a top ten RB, Jason Witten or a top 3 QB. I only mention Witten because I play in a PPR league that requires a TE. I honestly wouldn't move him because I dont think the injury is gonna effect him at all, but if you sent me an offer, thats what it would take for me even to take you seriously.

Where are you getting this info that he will play this weekend? Is it your own opinion? I haven't seen anything where he actually says he'll play if he is medically cleared. But I got slight wood when you said that...don't tease me.
 
I don't know why Drew Rosenhaus/Anquan aren't using this as an opportunity to once again get a contract commensurate with a Top 5 NFL WR.

To be so scarily close to a career-altering injury for a guy that had performed at such an elite level for so long in the NFL and to have never reaped a $10M+ upfront guarantee is a shame.

Boldin can say what he wants and its becasue he is simply one of the toughest, if not the toughest WR in the league. You have to admire the passion the guy shows but today is Thursday just 3 days from game day...I seriously doubt he plays this weekend and to me, it makes most sense that they would be very cautious in bringing him back.ARZ's bye is week 7, I'm huge on Boldin and have drafted him each of the last three years. that said, im prepared for him not to come back until week 8.

And I wont trade him...it would have to be over the top juicy.

Irvin and Boldin are very similar. They're even friends. Both made their names as physical receivers from the state of Florida. Both have been knocked out cold by the game they dearly love. "When I talked to Anquan, I said, 'So what it is, man? How do you feel? Is it a concussion?' " Irvin said. "He said, 'Yeah. And I've got a fracture (sinus membrane). The doctors told me to take a week off, and then I'm going to come back and give them the dirt. I'm going to give it right back to them.'
 
A fractured sinus is no joke. Playing flag football, a team mate and I were both attempting to break on a ball from opposite sides of the receiver. We both got in front of him, but we didn't see each other and my head hit his head and while I split my eyebrow open he ended up with a fractured sinus. Everytime he would attempt to do something as light as even jogging for several weeks afterwards, his sinus cavity would fill up with blood.

He had fractured his sinus previously and once the doc got a hold of his X-rays, he's been forbidden from playing any "contact" sports again.

Based on this experience my guess is Boldin probably comes back after the BYE (should surgery not be necessary), but that if he were to get rocked again like that, that it could possibly be career threatening.

fact:Rhodes hit him from behind and Smith hit him head on. Smith got the one game suspension and $50k fine.

opinion:

what I saw from the replay is that Rhodes left his feet and lowered his head in a "spearing" position. The hit caused Boldin's head to accelerate into Smith, face-to-face. Smith didn't leave the ground and kept his head up the whole time. I thought Rhodes should've been the one who got a suspension and fine.

There are actually many sinuses in the face, but I'm guessing this is the maxillary sinus. I just wonder how severe of a fracture this is if he actually considering playing with it.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt says Boldin needs to be cleared medically before any determination on his playing status is made. Boldin says his only injury is a "fracture near his sinus." His chances of facing Buffalo seem 50-50 at best.

Is it actually a sinus fx or a fx near his sinus? Is there a difference?

Anquan Boldin was off at the doctors during practice Thursday and coach Ken Whisenhunt said nothing has officially been determined on his status for the weekend. I still think it's unlikely he'll play; teammate Larry Fitzgerald was doing interviews sounding very much like he assumed he wouldn't have Boldin on the other side taking up defenders' attention.

There is a pic of Boldin down towards the bottom of the page. Looks swollen under his left eye...but nothing too dramatic...

Whisenhunt indicated a similar procedure involving a hockey player resulted in the player returning in about 10 days. So maybe there’s a (longshot?) chance Boldin could return next week, at home vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

Q has procedure, out for now

Anquan Boldin had a surgical procedure Thursday evening to repair the fracture in his skull and is obviously out for Sunday's game against Buffalo. Amazingly, Boldin has an outside chance to return for the Dallas game; coach Ken Whisenhunt said the doctor told Boldin a hockey player who had the same procedure played a game 10 days later. There is also a chance Boldin will sit out Dallas knowing the bye weekend follows. Either way, it means Steve Breaston will have to have a good game in Boldin's place against the Bills.

As for S Adrian Wilson (hamstring) and DE Bertrand Berry (groin), neither practiced Friday but Whisenhunt said both were improving and both will be listed as questionable. Wilson will be a game-day decision, Whisenhunt said. Tight end Leonard Pope (ankle) returned to practice and guard Elton Brown (elbow) looked OK too.

Boldin's history of bad breaks on injuries continue, but he's still slated for a huge season. Steve Breaston will start against Buffalo and makes for a fine WR3 play.

Updated the title since he will be out Week 5. Here's the notes from CBS:

News: Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin (head, sinus) has been ruled out for Week 5 vs. Buffalo. NFL.com reports that Boldin underwent surgery Thursday to repair the sinus fracture caused by a helmet-to-helmet hit Week 4 against the Jets. "They thought it was best to go ahead and do it and in order to get (Anquan) back as quickly as possible," head coach Ken Whisenhunt said, adding the doctor told Boldin a hockey player who had the same procedure played in a game 10 days later. Steve Breaston will replace Boldin and start opposite Larry Fitzgerald. "This is just like any other week for me, to be honest," Breaston said. "When the ball comes my way, I have to make a play, be a reliable resource for Kurt (Warner)."

Analysis: The Cardinals aren't sure if Boldin will return Week 6 against the Cowboys, but with a bye week after the Dallas game, it almost makes sense to keep him out until Week 8. If he does return Week 6, we will let you know. For now, keep Boldin sidelined Fantasy Week 5 and hope for a speedy recovery. He is a must-start Fantasy WR when healthy.

tough hockey players >>>>> tough football players. Boldin is a gamer, but just because a hockey player did something doesn't mean a football player will do it. Hockey players are ridiculous.
