I was checking out Doug's new updates to pro-football reference.

And I clicked on Boomer's stats.

He had a pretty good career. When he finished he was top 10 in TD passes. Pretty good for a cold weather place like Cincy.

Also, 6 straight years on top five finishes in Yards per completion.

Pretty much 2nd or 3rd in TD passes every year from 85-90 (Marino anyone?)

Similar career stats as Jim Kelly...and Kelly is in the HOF.

I'm thinking that Boomer isn't in because of Montana's drive in Super Bowl XXIII.

If not for that drive, Boomer would have a ring and a jacket.

Esiason is also an NFL MVP winner, another feather in the cap of HOF consideration.

I say he's clearly the best guy that's not going to get in;

Problem is that he wasn't a Top 5 QB in his era. That counts for something.Nothing quantitative to support my thoughts, but when I hear Boomer I think "stable" and a lengthy career - more of a compiler of stats. Not HoF material.

Ken Anderson also won one and I think the line for both best QB and best Bengal not in the Hall starts with him.

I would consider a guy like Vinnie Testaverde and Dave Krieg when I am thinking about compiler of stats.Boomer played 14 years.

But really it was 11 1/2. (Throwing out rookie year and two years at the end of his career.)

And during his prime era of 1985-1991, I would definitely say he was a top 5ish QB.

He also has a lot of "Black Ink". He was in the top 10 in a lot of categories for a bunch of years.

For the record, I think if he got his ring...he'd be worthy of a jacket.
