Bourbon guys (2 Viewers)

Whistle Pig is not cheap.   Did you get that because of the BBQ gig?  If so, I'm gonna go sit in the corner and contemplate all of my life choices again.
That's exactly how I got it. But it's more of a social media thing. I shared a couple of their pics on Instagram and they wanted to thank me for growing their brand awareness and their follower count. Instagram is big :moneybag:

Elmer T Lee (good luck finding some), Angel's Envy and Four Roses Small Batch.

I will search locally for ETL and check out prices here in SE MI. Of the Four Roses styles...is Small Batch your favorite? I've only had Single Barrel, which is good and it's one of those price break "good" items.
Michigan was ahead of the bourbon trend so we get large allotments. I rarely have trouble finding ETL. Ditto for Eagle Rare and some of these other bourbons that have started to become more difficult to find.

I live in KY and I can't find ETL (of course I'm also too lazy to enter lotteries, sign up for alerts when it is released, etc, and I won't pay a premium for it), but still.....

Weird isn't it. My SIL works for Sazerac in Chicago and even she has sometimes has trouble getting Eagle Rare. She said allotments by State are grandfathered in. So as demand has gone up for bourbon, there isn't always more supply to send because States that were earlier to the party hog the allotments. Although that makes no sense for Kentucky.

I did not exhaustively look, but I did peruse 6 different places over this past week and have not found ETL yet. Have you had any luck finding the Weller line? (Specifically WL Weller 12) At the moment that seems to be my most elusive search.

Where in Michigan are you? Do you have any Holiday Markets nearby? I have never looked for Weller but a local chef actually told me where to get some last week- it's in Canton. Not sure where you are or if they still have it. She said her BF was in charge of orders and got a couple bottles.

Michigan guys.  I bought a bottle of Weller at the Brass Mug liquor store on Newburgh just north of 7 mile rd in Livonia last month.

I am in the area for BOTH of those locations. I will give it a look. Thanks!!

Thanks for the lead. I finally got to stop in but I was informed that they get Weller twice a year in June & November. He also told me that Old Weller was more popular in sales and that they usually sell out of all Weller's within a few hours of supply receipt. In another store in the region, the owner informed me that he recently got 3 in and the girl that was working that particular day sold them at state minimum and they only lasted minutes. So that particular store will be raising the price on next shipment.

Suffice it to say, Weller must be pretty good and at least in SE Michigan region, it is a tough find!!

The Weller craze isn't entirely due to it's quality as much as it's similarity to "Pappy". I'm personally at the point I find many of the private barrel selections of Old Weller Antique 107 (roughly 7yrs old) to be significantly better bourbon than Weller 12yr. A lot of it is preference, but to my palate, a wheated bourbon tends to be a bit soft and uninteresting at lower proofs.

I had a pour of 2016 Pappy 20yr last night followed by a 2015 george t stagg (144.1pf)... the latter was a much better glass of bourbon, IMO.

Not to say folks shouldn't chase Weller products if they want... just temper your expectations of it being some life changing bourbon. It's good, but I'd wager many folks would have trouble picking out Weller 12yr blind vs Makers or Larceny, and both of the latter can be had off the shelf all day for $25.

It is good..but not so much better than any other good bourbon out there.  If it was available everyday there would not be a mystique to it.

Hey that's good info, thanks. (That's why I keep checking THIS thread.)

Definitely don't want to discourage anyone from chasing a bottle they want... just like to be sure folks have realistic expectations on what they're getting.

No discouragement taken!! I appreciate the realism.

On that note....Old Weller Antique 107 is pretty good! Thanks again for the "lean".

@icon one of my employees just bought his first house. He's saved and scrimped for years to get the down payment. Anyway, I want to get a nice bottle for him as a housewarming gift. I've got a few weeks to source this.

Under $100. Thx.

I like the Four Roses Single Barrel myself. I think it's only around $40-50.

It's very good and rather inexpensive. If the goal is to get bottle that someone would enjoy, 4R SB is a good choice. If the goal is to get a bottle that someone will enjoy and recognize as a significant gift, I wouldn't go 4R.

EH Taylor Single Barrel and runs around 60-70. Bakers, Bookers and Blantons are easier to find, 50-60 range. Any of those would be very appreciated. The thing with many bourbons is that it's less about the price and more about just trying to find them.

Hey sorry I just saw this!

My go to suggestion is Blantons at $60ish... it's a great bottle of whiskey at a fairly reasonable price.

If you're set on spending closer to $100, it really depends on what is available around you. Is he a pretty big bourbon fan?

He likes bourbon but doesn't spend much on it.

There is also a fine line between something someone will actually enjoy and something they will put on a shelf and wait for a special occasion that never seems to happen. I have a few bottles of wine, bourbon, scotch and beer (Abraxas) like that. Sure those special occasions happen, but I forget I have that special bottle and the opportunity is lost.

Maybe go with two bottles of something not as high end so he actually corks it and drinks it. That or give him the expensive bottle and pull the boss card on him. "Hey, I didn't buy this for you to put on the shelf. Drink it or you're fired." Or you know, a little softer than that, but you get the idea.

Thanks @FatUncleJerryBuss!

Pics of the bottles

Since apparently a buddy popped my last Cheers Liquor store pick of Eagle Rare and poured a glass from it, I'm throwing in a sample of Weller 12yr with it. Generally speaking Store single Barrel picks are more tasty than the normal releases. This one is exceptional, enjoy,

I need addresses from the 4 recipients via PM and I'm going to try to get these out tomorrow so you all will have them for NYE. :banned:
Finally got around to cracking open the Weller - really enjoying the smoky goodness of this bottle.

Thanks again and would definitely purchase this going forward.

Blantons
EH Taylor Single Barrel
EH Taylor Straight Rye
Michters Barrel Proof Rye (will likely want to cut with water/ice, but amazing flavor)

I'll be honest.. there's not a whole lot above $50-60 that is readily available and worth the money. Jefferson's Ocean and Barrel bourbons are that range but I'm not a fan, personally.

Also fell into a source in Italy for old dusty scotches/bourbons. I'm testing the waters by buying these two bottles from him for $70 shipped from Italy. (They are 1/10th pint (1.5oz) Minis):

1969 Stizel-Weller distlled Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond - Interestingly enough the back label claims 86 proof, but research shows that was purely for tax purposes with this particular whiskey. The tax stamp up top jives with the front BIB label to confirm it's the 100pf variety. Dusty SW Era Old Fitz BIB is considered by many to be one of the best bourbons ever distilled. I've wanted to try it, but haven't dropped the $100-200 per oz it fetches. Getting this 1.5oz nip for $25+ship works for me.

Early 1970's Michter's Sour Mash Commemorative Jug is intriguing to me as well. I've not had the old Pennsylvania era Michters so I had to splurge and grab this guy as well. The Tax strip is beaten but intact and fill level seems good.

Finally got around to opening one of these Saturday night with a buddy. Popped the Michters Jug... Cork was intact and seemed to have not been fouled.

Opened it

Poured It (note how DARK it was)

Split and enjoyed it with a buddy

Shockingly smooth... significant Port notes. Moderate oak. Almost a bit of Maple sweetness. Delicious.

Any local Colorado whiskeys that you like?

How are:

Stranahan's

Leopold Bro's

Law's Whiskey

Breckenridge
I've tried Stranahans and Breck (both the base model and the older stuff) and honestly I found them all to be overpriced for what they were. Not a fan. that said, everyone's palate varies. I had a buddy who hated his Stranahans so much he gave the bottle away after giving it two tries (a couple months apart to try to let it open up).

Had some Elijah Craig Barrel Proof over the weekend.  12 years old, 124 proof.

It had a deep and dark sweetness in spite of it's high alcohol content.  My neighbor the drunk loves high proof bourbons so I've had a chance to sample a few different ones.  I think I prefer the Four Roses and Stagg Jr. stuff he's had before but it's tough to tell without a side by side tasting.

Tons of local shops getting their Private Barrel selections this week.

Corks - Eagle Rare (today)
Joe’s - Eagle Rare, Weller 107 (This week)
Germantown Village - Eagle Rare (This week)
Buster’s - Weller 107 & Weller Reserve
Cheers - Weller 107 (today)
Liquor - Wine Depot Weller 107 (today)
Corks - Weller 107 (Today)
Poplar Wines - Weller 107 (today)

I've got 5 Bottles of Old Weller Antique 107 from Corks waiting on me. Hitting Liquor Depo, Cheers, and Poplar Wines after work. Reportedly a couple/few requested NCF (non chill filtering). Reached out to my buddy whos' head of barrel program for Buffalo Trace and he's looking into if any of them were granted NCF.

Wow.  Impressive.
Not all of this is mine, naturally. I had a lot of local buddies who needed some so I grabbed them bottles as well at cost.

I personally ended up with:
• 6 Bottles Wine & Liquor Depot
• 4 Bottles Corks Wine
• 2 Bottles Each from Cheers LIquor, and Poplar Wines.

Also bought another buddy 2ea from Wine & LIquor Depot and Cheers in exchange for him grabbing me 2ea from Busters Liquor and Joe's Liquor when their barrels hit this week.

Soooo that should leave me 2 bottles from each of the 6 barrels that hit town (a case total), plus 6 bottles to trade away. :banned:

Joe's dropped today.
Sprits Shoppe announced they have a barrel that's non-chill filtered (NCF) thursday or friday. I got him to hold me 4 bottles back.

Soooo now I'm at:
• 6 Bottles Wine & Liquor Depot
• 4 Bottles Corks Wine
• 4 Bottles Spirits Shoppe (promised)
• 2 Bottles Cheers LIquor
• 2 Bottles Poplar Wines
• 2 Bottles Joe's Liquor (buddy owed me)

Still waiting on Busters to drop so my buddy can grab me the 2 from there he owes me. That would put me at 22 bottles from 7 different private barrel picks this season.

I'm going to be swinging by a warehouse liquor store deal today, what should I be looking for in terms of pricing on this stuff?

What bottles are you targeting and wanting pricing on?

Eagle Rare is a ~$30 bottle... give or take a buck or two on taxes.
Weller 12yr should be $35ish if you can find it... often marked up IF hit hits shelves
Old Weller Antique 107pf is $25-30ish depending on state and if it's barrel pick or normal release
Weller Special Reserve is $20-25ish for same reasons.

Retail used to be lower but it's creeping up as retailers know they'll sell it all at higher prices.

Part of me wants to cast aspersions on whether you are an alcoholic. But the alcoholic in me thinks that looks amazeballs!
Ha! What's funny is I really don't drink much. Rarely during the week (maybe once every week or two I'll have an ounce or two after work) the only times I drink are out socially or at gatherings (my house or others) when I'll bring a bottle (or 10) and share with guests. It's not uncommon for me to leave a couple bottles at buddies houses I frequent as well.

You sound like a good friend to have

I've really enjoyed the Ocean, picked up some cask strength of it this past weekend. Hopefully will get into this week.

Thanks, GB, I will keep an eye out today and report back.

My wife just surprised me with a bottle of 4 Roses single batch barrel for my fishing trip.
