Bourbon guys (2 Viewers)

Ok, icon was very close - final rankings:

1. WSR

2. MM46

3. Larceny

4. Sweet Wheat

I was shocked when I found out that last was Sweet Wheat.  I’m not a big fan of the other 3 but WSR and MM46 are just decent.  I had never had Sweet Wheat but had been wanting to try it.  Not only was it last but it was way in last.  We all had it 4th except one person had it 3rd.  Not sure if they got a bad bottle or what but I kind of hated it.  I already knew I didn’t care for Larceny and WSR and MM46 are borderline mixers for me.  I’m beginning to think I don’t like Wheaters.

It's a rewards program for the local FL large chain liquor store. Each purchase you make throughout the year counts towards points and their top spenders get online access to "The Vault" a few times a year for the opportunity to buy mostly rare items at list.

 
Yeah, spot on explanation.  Grab anything Swanson?  Handy BTAC was in there also, I had to make a fast decision and chose GTS although I already have '17 and '18 GTS and never even tasted a Handy.  I saw a few of your Kentucky Owls I think too 😜...I got so excited that I couldn't dawdle and just did a fast scroll. Didn't see the email until 10 minutes after it was sent, no idea what was in there at the beginning.

Picked up a Barrel Whiskey Private Release BH36.

Buffalo Trace is scarce out there. One bottle between two stores, both with limits. The store that had a bottle required an additional 30 dollar purchase with a limit of 1.

In the least-****-possible way I can say it - do you mean Monkey Shoulder scotch, or did they start doing bourbon also? Because I agree with your statement as applied to their scotch and if they've managed to come up with a bourbon I'm'a have to hunt it down.

So, pipe dreaming a little here but Total Wine just posted the Spring lottery, 1st on my list is Michters25.  $1299.  For that price I believe it'd look like a beautiful centerpiece on my bar for the next year (I usually open my bourbons, they are to drink after all).  Secondary looks like it'd look even better on someone elses bar whilst the 6-7k or whatever would be buying Pappy 15, WLW and a stash left over for my pocket.  Anyone tried the 25?  Assuming that 6/7k isn't money that'd be missed (big assumption for us all, but just for argument), can it really be worth that much for the taste?  I'm not sure that I'm in a position to want to drink through a bottle that's valued that high, regardless of income/whiskey stash.  I am a huge fan of the M10 I just got so there's that littttttttle voice in the way back of my head that's asking why not keep it...so thought i'd ask.

Probably won't matter, I'm sure I'll just win a bottle of Blantons or something, if anything.  They just finished the winter lottery, won the right to buy Handy BTAC, so that didn't suck.

My buddy picked this up recently and we tried it.  Surprisingly good.  I was not expecting much as I'm not a big JD fan in general.

I am suspicious of any bourbons over 20 ish years old. Every 25 I've had has been either straight disappointing or disappointing for the price point. I think it is the exception and not the rule for bourbon to actually be good at that age.  But maybe Michter's is the exception. I haven't had it.

I love wheaters.  My go to.

I love love love sweet wheat and 46.  

Larceny is ok.  It's kind of syrupy for me and almost has a cherry cough syrup kind of thing going on at times.  I'll finish the bottle--because who wastes bourbon--but won't be in a hurry to get more.

I've VERY blah on WSR.  I love Weller in general.  Full proof is my favorite whiskey bar none.  12 is very good.  CYPB is decent, nothing special, definitely not worth the price.  Haven't had the single barrell yet--dude at work has a bottle and won't crack it. 

Woodford Wheat is a wheated whiskey rather than bourbon--but I usually lump it in since Woodford does a lot of bourbon.  It's also excellent.  35-40$/bottle.

There's a Jim Beam Select series Red Wheat--like 50$ for a 375 ml--and it's a big miss IMO.  Not anything special, definitely not worth it at that price.

MM46 is decent for me but that was my first time having Sweet Wheat and I didn’t really care for it.

I do really like the Woodford Wheat a lot, especially for the price - I can get it for $30 at Costco.

So, once again I went in to this totally blind - I managed to nail that we were drinking BiB bottles.  Once I knew the 5 bottles I would have ranked them prior to the blind like this:

  • EHT
  • McKenna
  • 1792
  • Early Times (although I love this bottle)
  • Old Fourth - we had tried this previously and honestly we hated it.
Here's how I ended up ranking them:

  • EHT
  • Early Times (this made me smile)
  • McKenna
  • 1792
  • Old Fourth (this made me laugh)
Overall rankings from the 5 of us:

  • EHT - (2 first place, 3 second place) - not surprising, EHT is quality
  • 1792 - (2 first place, 1 second place, 1 third place, 1 fourth place) - I had this lowest of the four.  We have like 4 bottles of the 1792 line and this one is my favorite of the 1792 - it's pretty good but just not my jam most of the time
  • Early Times - (1 second place, 3 third place, 1 fourth place) - This is in the conversation for best value in bourbon.  $23 for 1L - it's good stuff
  • McKenna - (1 first place, 1 third place, 3 fourth place) - Once the price went up on this after it won all the awards I wasn't willing to pay 50+ for it.  But I really like it - it's a really solid bourbon and probably doesn't deserve to be 4th on this list.
  • Old Fourth - (5 DFL - :lmao: ) - this stuff is swill and is deserving of a drain pour.  And it's not cheap - $50.  I don't know if we got a bad batch/bottle or it's just crap but it has little redeeming qualities - not even sure I'd use it in a cocktail as it has this funky bread note that is very off-putting and I think would ruin a cocktail.
 
Having tried quite a few whiskeys and bourbons in the $20 to $50 range over the last year, I think that Bushmills might be the smoothest???

I find just about all Irish to be smooth - even the couple of barrel proof I've had.  To me it's a good way to introduce someone to whisky.

 
John J. Bowman Single Barrel

About $52 and worth every penny.  Supposedly same mash bill as Blanton's just distilled again in Virginia.  It was hard to find and my guy said it is only released once a year?  I bought that and "Bowman Brothers" ($30) and it was great for a "daily drinker".  If I can find more I'm going to stock up.

Green spot is excellent. Might be a little higher  then range and not carried everywhere but fabulous and it is made with traditional methods (Single Pot Distilled) vs Most Irish Whiskeys that arent anymore.

I'd never paid much attention to Bowman, but it looks like they are a Sazerac brand and they get single distillate from Buffalo Trace and further distill and then age it from there. Interesting.  I had always assumed they were using MGP or Dickel.

I was going to say Green Spot or Redbreast 12 are both really good but a little over $50.  Powers is pretty good and I personally like regular Jameson - their caskmates line can be hit or miss for me.  

 
@Joe Bryantor anyone else - any good liquor stores or breweries or brew-houses to hit in Knoxville area?  We are heading to Pigeon Forge for a few days but staying in Knoxville one night.  I mainly want to find a few things I can't get in Georgia - New Riff, George Remus and would love to land some of the Weller line (it's crazy expensive in Georgia).

And I shouldn't have said "same" mash bill, but similar.  Some say it is a mix of mash bill #1 and #2. (maybe more rye than Blantons?)

Not that I know of. I don't think we have anything I know of that's not available anywhere else. And Lord be with you going to Pigeon Forge.

So we ended up staying a little north of town but I spent about an hour earlier today looking and found several of the things I was looking for:

- Willet 4 yr. Rye - crazy, this stuff was everywhere up here and it’s impossible to find in GA - grabbed 2 bottles 

- George Remus (they have the Repeal too but didn’t get it) - this isn’t in GA and is a pretty good bottle - cherry bomb

- Bardstown Discovery 2 and 3.  $130 - could have bought a few of each but just couldn’t do it.  Anybody have this and have an opinion?  It’s very popular with YouTube reviewers

- Went in to a place downtown after we ate at Tupelo Honey and found a High West Bourye which is also nearly impossible to find in GA

I've been hunting retail Discovery 3 and 4 here in SWFL without luck.  I have D1 and enjoy it but same, saw YTers salivating over 3/4 so i've been on the lookout.  Crack either yet?

Didn’t get either.  Supposedly Bardstown is supposed to hit Georgia soon so I decided to wait.  Seems easy to find in the Knoxville area and no price gouging.  It and the 4-yr Willet Rye was everywhere.

Let’s go full on pedantic.  Scotch is whisky and bourbon is whiskey. ;)  

 
Stopped at one of my favorite stores on my way to camping - talking to a guy at the store and he said he heard they were closing and had some deals on the shelf.  Look around and they had 1792 Aged Twelve Years - something you never see around here.  They had it for $52!  The only time I’ve seen it, it was well over $100 - limit one but it was a insta-buy.
