Brad Smith's Long Term Value? (1 Viewer)

What do people think about Brad Smith? Is he another Matt Jones in the making or can he make the transition from QB to WR? At the beginning of this year Coles was lukewarm about playing another season and I wouldn't be surprised to see him retire this off season. What is the upside of Smith?

I understand he dropped a sure TD pass this past week. Does he have bad hands or was that an aberration? What is his ceiling and what is the likelihood, given a chance, that he will reach it within the next two years?

I've watched the Jets all season, and he has bad hands.

He'll catch a few balls because they dont have much to throw to. But he's not going to explode. He's more of a gimmicky player (i.e. Randle El). But the difference btw Randle El and him is Randle El is faster and runs much better routes.

If Coles retires, I see the Jets looking for a WR, not relying on Brad Smith.

Thanks. That's the sort of analysis I was looking for since I have not seen many games. I know he has good physical size but after getting burned by Matt Jones I am leery of QR-Wr converts.

So many questions!!!

I think he's a talented player just learning the position. He is far from Matt Jones, as he is more of a hard-nose football player willing to work hard. Jones got by on talent and never decided to be a professional football player.

I didn't see the pass, but I'll say Smith has decent hands, he won't ever be 85 or Holt, but he'll make most catches.

I hadn't heard about Coles retiring, but if he did, Smith could be a decent #2 to Cotchery, with speed and quickness. He seems more apt to fill the slot role though. Probably one of those "better football player than FF stats will indicate" guys. Still, despite him being a Tiger, he was one of my favorite college players and will be in the NFL for quite some time (just never a FF stud)

Yes he does. He's no Ronald Curry at this point in time.

Smith also isn't as fast or physical as people think.

He's agile, which doesnt equate to burning by guys. He finds ways to get the ball, but once again, he doesn't have much explosiveness. But because he can throw, they use him a few times a game at QB(as an option guy).

I cant see him as their No. 2 WR next year. I dont see anyone on that roster. They are really thin at WR. The only guy who might come out of nowhere is this guy they have(I think his name is Stuckey). They loved him in preseason, but he got hurt and is out for the year. But they think hes got potential(the same that Cottchery had)

agile is a better term, scratch my "quick", and replace accordingly.

Yeah ive been holding a few weeks with coles limited and now out, but he drops the TD pass, then they show confidence and come back to him 1 play later on the lob and he really didnt even battle for it.. thinking of releasing

NY Homer... Brad Smith probably has the worst hands out of our WR's. Mangini is just extremely high on him... personally i rather see McCarins in at the #2 slot if coles is out. McCarins is considered a bust but he has great hands. Brad Smith is completely overrated and no where near randle el... big difference, randle el could catch.

I remember one game earlier this year (forgot against who) where McCareins dropped two passes in the final minute, including the go-ahead TD pass that went right throw his hands. McCareins will probably be gone at season's end

ravens game. ruined KC's debut. Mcariens is trash. worst trade ever.

I thought he made some really tough catches last year, showing better hands than I thought. This year, not so much. He's dropped some easy ones. His versatility is his best asset. I wouldn't expect much production from him. That piece of crap McCareins will get some yardage. He's not worth playing either. That guy never fights for the ball.

Smith probably doesn't have as bad of hands as he showed last week, but when you compare him (and McCareins) to Cotchery and Coles, clearly it's night and day.

Smith has some potential, but I don't see him as a consistent #2 guy. The Randel El comparison seems about right.

agile? Must be Italian.

Smith has a way's to go....

I'm one of the last McCareins fans..... At this point I'd take JMAC over Smith.

Jmac has had incredibly bad luck ever since he's been a Jet from Chad's arms woes and injuries to Paul Hackett conservatism to injuries himself and then to Cotchery taking over the #2 role even to having leg cramps in camp last year putting him in the dog house.... That drop Vs Baltimore was rough but, it happens and it's magnified when your chances are so low...

What you can't take from him is his work ethic which is up there and his speed and size, so he has some value where people want to paint this guy like a useless piece of trash. If this guy didn't have the work ethic he has, with what's gone on, Mangini wouldn't have him on the team.

PERIOD.

Fantasy wise... You'd have to be real hard pressed to EVER count on one of these guys as a Starter short term or long term.

I'm sorry man, but Mccariens isnt any good. If he was, he would have at least shown a glimpse. He hasn't. The fact that we gave up a 2nd for him makes me want to puke(especially after the Pats get moss for a 4th)

I've liked Brad since his days at Mizzou. He's a guy who just makes things happen. Lat weeek, he got the end zone fade routes that had been going to Coles. I didn't see anything easy about either catch. Should be noted that he got 8 targets, including all of the red zone targets, while Cotchery ony got 5. He'd be an interesting one week play, and I'm thinking of picking hikm up for Booker, just to deny him to the other owners I'm competing with

Smith got most of targets since the very strong Steelers secondary was blanketed Coles/Cotch, and even more so when Coles was out. I don't think that will be the case against more inferior secondaries.

Don't be sorry.... I know the trade didn't work out as we hoped, I'm only talking about what he can do for us now... And it looks like he'll be the Jets #2/#3 WR for this week and possibly more... Where I sit that isn't TOO BAD.... He's got size, he's got speed and he's got a great work ethic. It could be a lot worse.

:lmao: I've read nothing about Coles retiring.

Dude is tough as nails.
You should pay more attention in the off season. Coles brought up the possibility of retirement several times, usually in the context of the pain and impact on his body and how he felt like he was getting older. Here is just one such story. If you want to find the rest do the search yourself.http://www.nypost.com/seven/09042007/sport...es_in_charg.htm

September 4, 2007 -- Laveranues Coles and Eric Mangini are the Jets' version of the Odd Couple.

Since the disciplinarian Mangini arrived as head coach last year and implemented his long and tough practices, Coles has grumbled publicly, complaining about how the practices break the players down and even going so far as to raise speculation that playing in such an environment might force him to retire early.

i expect that pain of his to subside since he will no longer be getting killed as a result of Chad's lollypops over the middle. Yesterday was a bad luck injury. Playing WR for Chad for another year would have been a one way ticket to Dan Morganville.
