After running in the mid-4.5s at the 2005 NFL Combine, Brandon Jacobs is reportedly now running his forty-yard dash in the mid-4.4s.

This offseason, Jacobs worked with Eddie George, who told the Giants' new starter to lower his pads and create leverage. Similar advice from Stephen Davis helped Steven Jackson become more productive after first contact last year. Jacobs is going in the Rounds Three and Four of most fantasy drafts.

I found this on roto world. 260lbs and 4.4 40yd, makes me sad I traded him away, becasue it sure looks like he is doing everything he can to get himself ready to shoulder the full load this season.

"I don't give a damn what people say," Jacobs said. "I have talent, I can catch the ball, I can run with it. I don't have to run somebody over all the time. I actually am a running back."

Damn, I think I am going to have to try and trade back for him. I like this kind of attitude.

Jacobs' speed and endurance were evident during a workout last week at Giants Stadium with Droughns and third-string running back Derrick Ward. For each of the 100-yard gassers they ran, Jacobs was first to the line, first off the line and first to cross the line. And even though his teammates were just hoping to make it through 10 sprints, he was trying -- unsuccessfully -- to convince them to run 14.

Now why is it that he won't be able to last the whole game?

because he's too tall, runs high, and is a straight line runner. he has no moves, he isn't gifted like Bettis was, a guy who had quick feet..only two RBs at or over 260LBS ever ran for 1000 yards in a season, Heyward and Okoye.also,if the hole isn't there, he can run..this giants O-line is a suspect unit at best. if you have faith in Kevin Gilbride, fine. I don't. I think teams stack the box with 8 guys, stop Jacobs and Droughns, and force Eli to pass..you needed to respect the run when tiki was around, but without him, teams will stack the line with defenders.Jacobs has never carried the rock 300+ times in his life, what makes you think he will now?!

Ok, half of this doesn't even make sense. If there 'isn't' a hole he can run? I think you meant to say he can't run unless there is a hole. Also the bit about Tiki is counter intuitive. If Tiki was such a threat to run, teams would have stacked the line against him and let Manning beat them. Are you saying that because Jacobs is less of a threat at RB, teams will stack the run to stop him? Doesn't make sense.

maybe because 10 gassers <> a nfl game?

But still you have to admit it's a good sign.

Well, you show me 5 other backs in the league that would have put Tiki on the bench these past 3 seasons? I still don't understand what the bolded part means.

You can forget all that other stuff - I bolded the section that stated only 2 backs over 260 have ever run for 1000 yards. That's all you need to know. I for one won't be spending a 3rd round pick gambling that he becomes the third.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ABOUT JACOBS... I like being in leagues with guys who think hes worthless and allow me to draft him in late 3rds early 4ths

How many 260lb tailbacks have there been?

I love this. How many this how many that. There is a first for everything. How many QB's ran a 4.2-4.3 40 before Vick? How many 180lb RB's posted multiple 1000yd rushing seasons before Dunn? How many QB's threw 49td before Manning? There are always people who break the norm, and Jacobs has a chance to do that. I don't think anyone here is saying that Jacobs is the second coming of Walter Payton, but there is no denying that there is potential for greatness here. Well, thats what I am saying anyway.

Umm, your on crack if you think Jacobs should go in the 2nd round which would be implied from the above statement. He is suppose to go in the late 3rd and 4th round. Your not exactly getting a steal there buddy. Nice try.

And one more thing, how many 260lb+ RB's have posted 4.4 40's? Get my point?
I'm more curious as to how many 260 pound RBs have had 250 or 300 carries in a season, or even more. I don't think anyone is questioning his talent, but there are a lot of concerns about durability with his upright running style, and even more questions about stamina. These are legitimate questions. Jacobs seems to be getting a wider variety of opinions than any other player up to now.

Please read the whole article. In it, he talks about how he is changing his upright running style. He said that he has worked very extensivly with Eddie George and his trainer in the offseason to fix this.

This is total silliness. He is not a straight line runner at all and has pretty damn good moves. Too tall??? He's 6'4" not 7'4".Steven Jackson is 6'2" is that too tall as well? I don't hear anyone mention this about SJax and it's only a 2 inch difference.I offer you this: (Props to boondocksaint80 for the research)Last season Jacobs averaged 5.4 yds/att excluding the short yardage plays. He averaged 5.3 Yds/att between the 20'sHe Averaged 4.9 yds/att when rushing on first downHe averaged 13.5 yds/receptionHe averaged 7.1 yds/att when running outside (wide left and wide right) He is a beast and as I've been saying in every post-he's good for 900-1100 yards and 12-15 TD's this year.Pass on him at your own risk.Side note: I used to hear that Steve Smith was too small to play WR and he's done fairly well. Same argument was made about Emmitt Smith when he came out of Florida. Talent is talent and if you can play the game your height has little to do with anything:goodposting:

I've never seen a back built like Jacobs to be honest. I don't plan on using a third rounder on him either, but to just dismiss him because he's big seems a bit premature.

The Giants acquired Droughns from the Browns in a trade for injury-plagued receiver Tim Carter back in March. In their eyes, the eight-year veteran with two 1,000-yard seasons wasn't an insurance policy or fallback option but rather the other half of a 1-2 punch. In a copycat league, the four teams that reached the conference championship games did so riding a pair of running backs.
This fluff piece does not make Jacobs a feature back. The article even says its full fledged RBBC. Droughns is the shark move here.

One problem with that it that Eddie George was a very upright runner himself. Of course Eddie played a long time and was pretty productive and was tall like Jacobs so maybe he is the right guy to train with.

Thats what people do here. These same people yapping about taking the unproven jacobs in rd4 are the same ones who will be after him next year at the end of rd1. I love playing against the guys like that. I call them the 'a year too late fellas". These guys notoriously always miss the boat on a player, next year at this time we will be saying what a bargain jacobs was in rd4, it will be alot like Gore was last year.

To me, it really comes back to talent with Jacobs. He seems to move pretty well and is obviously a moose. I highly doubt Reuben Droughns is going to do much there. So that leave a lot of opportunity for Jacobs. I really don't see much standing in the way of 1000 yards and pretty solid TD numbers. He seems to be a nice pick if a guy could get him in the 4th round after going RB-WR-WR in the top 3. Just one strategy.

George was also a stud in college for a major program, he was a proven feature RB and someone to build a team around.Jacobs couldn't even carry the load at Southern Illinois. 40 times mean nothing when compared to football speed. It's like the article says, Jacobs is average for the first ten yards and fast for the last thirty. That's a bad combo for his upright running. He can't punish people without a head of steam, and he'll be tackled before he gets to build one up. This guy is the most obvious failure I've ever seen.

As a BJ owner in multi leagues (one Dynasty)... I want Droughns to take some of the load. a 250 carry workload should do for the big man until he proves he can handle more... however; a large man moving that fast is amazing and can not be overlooked; not even by doubters such as your self... your going to loss your sig bet.

So don't draft him. I really don't care what your opinion of him is. I like his size and speed and situation. If the season break right for him, he'll have a nice year. If not, I won't worry too much because I am not drafting him really very high. You have to take chances, not everybody on your team is first round caliber. Jacobs represents potential value.

Why buy a lottery ticket in the third round when you can own a blue chipper instead? Makes no sense.
Which RB in the third round is a blue chipper? Jacobs seems to be a similar risk to most of the guys in the second thru fourth rounds, yet you seem to think he's radioactive

Serious question: Why does the third round pick have to be an RB? Is that a rule in your league?

Just trying to compare apples to apples, not everyone is slavishly devoted to going RB-RB in rounds 1 and 2, so some of us look for later RBs that are deemed too risky by the groupthink of ADP.

What the balls are you even talking about? I can only assume that you are trying to start controversy or something, because how in the hell can you be the biggest failure, before you even do anything? And don't say he had high expectations coming out of college because you yourself said that he has never been the feature back. Jacobs is all about potential, period. Maybe he blows up and maybe he just has an ok season, who knows? What we do know, is Jacobs seems to have been preparing for the feature roll all off-season, and seems to have a level head on his shoulders. And the guy who talked about Gore hit it right on the money! Who would have thought that a guy could come back from multiple surgery’s on BOTH knees, and surgery on his shoulders, and blow up like he did? I got Gore in the 4th round of a dynasty draft last season and everybody was talking the same tired crap you are talking. They aren't talking anymore though :lmao:

I offer you this: (Props to boondocksaint80 for the research)Last season Jacobs averaged 5.4 yds/att excluding the short yardage plays. He averaged 5.3 Yds/att between the 20'sHe Averaged 4.9 yds/att when rushing on first downHe averaged 13.5 yds/receptionHe averaged 7.1 yds/att when running outside (wide left and wide right) He is a beast and as I've been saying in every post-he's good for 900-1100 yards and 12-15 TD's this year.Pass on him at your own risk.
It's very easy to average high YPC when you have a small number of carries. I don't have the numbers here but he had less than 100 carries last year, and I'm guessing only half of those were between the 20's. I can agree with the 900-1100 yard projection but I think your TD totals are way high. The NY offense will not be good enough to put him in position to score that much this year.

HK is just a hater
H.K. = High KrackheadHis Jacobs argument is extremely weak. ;)
Facts are not arguments.Jacobs has three games in his career where he carried 10+ times. His combined YPC in those games is 3.5. His career YPC is 3.9.The more he gets the ball, the worse he does. Not exactly feature back material, no wonder he hasn't had a full time role since HS and the Giants got Droughns after Tiki retired.

I like Jacobs as a potential RB2 option. If I have a high slot and can get a blue chip RB (LT, SJ, LJ, maybe Gore) in Round 1 and then two top tier WRs in Rounds 2 & 3, then I would be happy to see Jacobs available in Rd. 4. I could be wrong, sure, but that's how I view it now.

And one more thing, how many 260lb+ RB's have posted 4.4 40's? Get my point?
Exactly...And just because it hasn't happened in the past does not mean it won't happen in the future. Remember when RB's that blew an ACL never really played again? Then it was RB's that blew an ACL had a year before they did anything. Then Jamal Lewis blew out the knee and had 1300+ yards the next year and 2K the year after that. Remember when RB's hit a wall at 30? A ton of guys have shattered that. Players in this league are getting bigger and faster. This is sort of new territory. The Giants coaches are going to have to be really careful with BJ and will need to spell him quite a bit. I'm OK with that. Limit the guy to 16 carries and around 3 receptions a game. That's 256 carries and 48 receptions. If he got those exact numbers and the vast majority of the goal line touches I would be giddy....

"I don't give a damn what people say," Jacobs said. "I have talent, I can catch the ball, I can run with it. I don't have to run somebody over all the time. I actually am a running back." Damn, I think I am going to have to try and trade back for him. I like this kind of attitude.
TELL EM MOFO!! Like hearing this too. Get that chip on yo shoulder dawg!

You have to take chances, not everybody on your team is first round caliber. Jacobs represents potential value.
Why buy a lottery ticket in the third round when you can own a blue chipper instead? Makes no sense.
I understand your point but for a guy looking to stock up on say Rudi in the first, Holt in the second, maybe Boldin in the third, Jacobs is a potential starting caliber running back with good upside. And coupled with a superior supporting cast of wideouts, IF HE HITS ON HIS POTENTIAL, he could vault your team to elite status.I have him ranked ahead of ho hummers like Ahman Green and Caddy. I just like his upside more.

Hey, don't underestimate players' ability to change their mechanics. After several years in the league with major fumblitis, Tiki changed the way he carried the ball and his offseason work regimen, and the results speak for themselves. I saw some improvement from his first to second year in his pad level. Who's to say that working with a great RB like George won't help him even further?
