Brandon Wood... (1 Viewer)

For those of you who might need some middle infield/power help...

...a low-risk option that might be out there on your waiver wire is Brandon Wood. Chances are he qualifies at SS and he is going to get called up for Hendrick.

Hold on to him for a few weeks and see if he sticks for good. The Angels are really struggling to hit right now, so if he shows some a small level of production, he could stay in the majors for the duration.

Agreed. I originally drafted him this season but ended up cutting him for one of the newly found closers. He was snatched up yesterday am. I haven't seen it announced that he's gonna be called up though.

I have a question. Does a player have to be on the 40 man roster to be called up? If he does than the Angels have to make a transaction to put Brandon on the 40 man. 40 man roster

If I can count the Angles only have 39 players on their 40 man roster. They can add Brandon this evening and not have to drop anyone.

Promotion From MinorsIf a player is already on the 40-man roster, but in the minors, he is "recalled." If he is in the farm system, but not on the 40-man roster, then his contract is purchased from the minor-league team. A player must be added to the 40-man roster when his contract is purchased.
I also noted something interesting. Their top pitching prospect, Nick Adenhart, is also not on the 40 man. This guy has been lights out in AA this spring. Expect him to get promoted to AAA before the season is over.

Howie Kendrick Replacement Possibilities

Howie Kendrick was put on the 15 day disabled list due to a broken bone in his left middle finger. Kendrick was hit by a pitch from Oakland's Chad Gaudin during Tuesday night's game. So the question now is, who will replace Howie?

Erick Aybar will probably be the main replacement for Kendrick. Aybar started today's game at 2nd base and went 0-for-3. His .125 batting average should fit in nicely with the rest of the Angels lineup.

Maicer Izturis could also see some time at second base. If Maicer plays second base, look for Robb Quinlan (0-for-12 this season) or Shea Hillenbrand (5-for-35) to fill in at 3rd base.

As for a replacement on the roster, there are a few options at AAA Salt Lake, all of which probably won't involve a second baseman. In the past three games, the Bees have started a different player at second base each game - Matt Brown, Adam Pavkovich and Casey Smith.

Here are the most likely players to be called up:

Kendry Morales was with the Angels last year and is hitting .304 with 1 home run and 7 rbi for the Bees this season. Although Kendry plays first base, he could be used as a switch hitting bat off the bench.

Brandon Wood, the Angels top prospect, could be called up as an extra bat. He just moved from shortstop to 3rd Base this spring, so defensively he could be a liability. Wood is hitting only .264 with 3 home runs and 8 rbi at Salt Lake City. He has also struck out 16 times in 53 at-bats.

Outfielders Nathan Haynes and Terry Evans are also possibilities although I think the Angels would like to have an extra infielder in Kendrick's absence.

I agree that Aybar will be the guy. Perfect chance for the Angels to see what he can do before either keeping or trading him. Pretty soon they need to make some space in the infield. No reason to start Wood's arbitration clock just to sit.

According to an Angels MB Morales was called up and Wood was not. I will look for a link.

Here is the article from the LA Times. Link

Angels to call up Morales

The club will add the switch-hitting first baseman to the roster to fill the spot of injured second baseman Howie Kendrick.

By Mike DiGiovanna, Times Staff Writer

10:39 AM PDT, April 20, 2007

Switch-hitting first baseman Kendry Morales will be called up from triple-A Salt Lake today to fill the roster spot of Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick, who broke a bone in the back of his right hand Tuesday night and is expected to be sidelined for about a month.

The Angels will probably rotate Erick Aybar, Maicer Izturis and Robb Quinlan through the second-base and third-base spots, with Izturis and Quinlan sharing time at third and Aybar and Izturis sharing time at second.

Morales, who was hitting .291 with one home run, two doubles and eight runs batted in for Salt Lake, could play at first or designated hitter. The 23-year-old Cuban hit .234 with five homers and 22 RBIs in 57 games for the Angels last season.

Morales' stint in Anaheim could be brief. Angels third baseman Chone Figgins, on the disabled list because of broken bones in the tips of the index and middle fingers of his right hand, could begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment early next week and return by next weekend.

When Figgins is activated, the Angels will probably start him at third and move Izturis to second.

Just checked the position eligibility on these three (Aybar, Izturis, Quinlan) @ yahoo. Aybar needs only more more game @ 2nd to be eligible.

No Woods for now. If they weren't going to give him at bats now, when they could for a straight week, I don't see him coming up any earlier than September (barring a Cabera injury).

He will be a better player than Cabera. But as of now, Cabera isn't a slouch, and is blocking Wood's path.

Keep tabs on this guy, however, as I see him as mix between ARod and Little Drew of ARZ in terms of plate production.

I am going to disagree with part of your statement on Wood, he is not the SS of the future in LA. This spring the Angles decided to move him to 3rd because they felt that was his best chance at the majors. They currently have Cabrerra @ SS and I think the plan at one time was that Aybar would be next in line with Kendrick at 2nd. Also, keep in mind that they have a pretty good SS prospect at AA in Sean Rodriguez. Link to his number this year. I believe the master plan is to have Wood at 3rd, Aybar/Rodriguez at SS, Kendrick at 2nd and Kothman at 1st.

The numbers that guy was putting up in AAA were off the charts. The stadium they play in must be a band box.
From High A up, the Angels prospects play in bandboxesA+ = California League - the most hitter friendly league in the minors. People put up ridiculous numbers there every year due to the ballparks and the favorable weather conditions that allow the ball to flyAA = Texas League = 3rd friendliest league overall for many of the same reasonsAAA = Pacific Coast League = only slightly less than Cal League...imagine a league where 40% of the ballparks play like Coors Field and you have the PCLGo back and look at Wood's 2005 numbers in A+ and then look at the HR dropoff in 2006 while he was in AA. If he stays in the PCL for 450 at bats this year, he could hit another 40 HRs.

From todays transactions @ the official Angles website.

4/26/07 Optioned infielder Kendry Morales to Triple-A Salt Lake City and purchased the contract of infielder Brandon Wood.

He's suppose to get at least 2 starts this weekend at 3B. Then maybe sent back down when Figgens returns Monday. I picked him up this morning and hope he sticks.

The owner that snatched him, then dropped him 3 days ago. He cleared waivers this morning and now he's MINE! :banned:

They optioned down Kendry Morales to make room for Wood, reversing their decision from last week. Although Wood is with the team now and is a big-time prospect, it doesn't necessarily mean he'll play every day. Manager Mike Scioscia said that having Wood will allow him to cover for a couple of different infielders over the short-term, before Chone Figgins comes back from his rehab assignment.

get used to those K's. He is going to whiff at least 1/3rd of the time if not more. Russell Branyan esque until he learns better.
